Pleurotus ostreatus volatile aroma compounds identified from fruit-body and from mycelium grown in submerged and solid-state cultures

2003

Comparative analyses of volatile aroma compounds of the Pleurotus ostreatus JMO.95 fruit-body and its corresponding mycelium grown in liquid, on agar surface, or on solid support cultures have been carried out by dynamic headspace concentration using GC/MS and GC/sniffing. The aroma of the fruit-body was due essentially to the presence of octan-3-one and, in a lesser extent, to the presence of octan-3-ol. Other compounds, such as oct-l-en-3-ol, oct-l-en, 2-methylbutanol and a-pinene were also present in low concentrations. The comparison of the aromatic spectra of the fruit-body with the aromatic spectra of mycelia obtained under different culture conditions indicated that the main aromatic…

Investigations for fine mapping of amplifications in chromosome 3q26.3-28 frequently occurring in squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck.

2002

Objective: Overrepresentations of chromosomal material on the long arm of chromosome 3 frequently occur in squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck. This experimental study was conducted for further fine mapping of these overrepresentations by interphase fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) of tumor cells in cell lines. Methods: Seven cell lines derived from squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck were investigated by comparative genomic hybridization to analyze unbalanced chromosomal aberrations. Overrepresentations of chromosomal material on the telomeric part of the long arm of chromsome 3 were further analyzed by interphase FISH using…

Changing Policy Environments in Europe and the Resilience of the Third Sector

2020

Contains fulltext : 202754.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) In the article, we analyse the impact of changing policy environments on the development of the third sector in Europe. Based on the results of systematic comparative research in eight European countries (Austria, Croatia, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain and the UK), we identify commonalities and differences. In a three-step analysis, we examine policy changes, effects on the third sector and responses by third sector organizations (TSOs) in the social domain. Overall, the third sector in Europe has proven resilient. However, not only have public and private funding decreased, the process for acquiring suc…

Justifying Civic Activism in Russia and Finland

2013

ABSTRACTIn this article, we present a novel way of researching civil society in a comparative perspective and illustrate it through a detailed analysis of public disputes concerning urban building construction projects in St. Petersburg and Helsinki in 2008–2009. In our illustration, we use justification theory, a line of thought developed by Luc Boltanski and Laurent Thevenot in the early 1990s, but until now little used in comparative civil society research. Moreover, we use a variant of Public Justification Analysis, a new method for analysing media data. Our focus is on moral justifications, that is, on arguments which are presented against or in favour of the proposed projects and whic…

Hands-on or Video-based Learning with ANTicipation? A Comparative Approach to Identifying Student Motivation and Learning Enjoyment During a Lesson a…

2015

The observation of living animals in school laboratories provides authentic views of biological research. Various studies stress the importance of primary experiences in biology classes. However, educational films may serve as an alternative in some cases. The aim of this study was to investigate student motivation before and after treatments, including (1) an educational film, (2) a hands-on activity with living animals accompanied by an educational film and (3) a hands-on activity with living animals. We investigated the influence of teaching method, gender and class level on student motivation and learning enjoyment. In all treatments, Temnothorax ants were addressed, which can be easily…

The function of contextual knowledge: A videotaped class session in France

2015

This paper concerns seeing; specifically, what should and what can be seen in a classroom situation in a progressive school in Paris. It focuses on a lesson given in a foreign cultural context and the possibility of documenting it and reconstructing it: first, as far as possible, unaffectedly and out of context, to achieve comparative and interpretative classroom research. The emphasis will be on the way the subject matter is set up and the role the learners assume. It will become apparent that technical recordings, which are helpful in allowing literal transcriptions and descriptions, tempt us into abandoning objectiveness, thereby overlooking certain facts and circumstances. Only contextu…

Challenging the Rule of Political Liberalism

2020

Abstract The origin of the ongoing conflict between the EU and Poland may, according to the author, partly be subscribed to the EU-institutions conceptualization of the rule of law. This conceptualization, which in the article is referred to as “the rule of political liberalism”, establishes a particular set of legal institutional and substantial frames and limits for national democratic politics. Granted that the rule of law is an inherently contested concept, the author deconstructs the rule of political liberalism, reveals its weaknesses and ideological bias and proposes an alternative understanding of the rule of law. “The rule of pragmatism” is based on a pragmatic conceptualization of…

Interstitial deletions of chromosome 1p: novel 1p31.3p22.2 microdeletion in a newborn with craniosynostosis, coloboma and cleft palate, and review of…

2022

Abstract Background Rearrangements of unstable DNA sequences may alter the structural integrity or the copy number of dose-sensitive genes, resulting in copy number variations. They may lead more frequently to deletions, in addition to duplications and/or inversions, which are the underlying pathogenic mechanism of a group of conditions known as genomic disorders (or also contiguous gene syndromes). Interstitial deletions of the short arm of chromosome 1 are rare, and only about 30 patients have been reported. Their clinical features are variable, in respect of the extent of the deleted region. They include global developmental delay, central nervous system (CNS) malformations, craniosynost…

Comparative evaluation of postoperative pain and periapical healing after root canal treatment using three different base endodontic sealers – A rand…

2022

Abstract Backgroundː Endodontic Sealers come in direct contact with periapical tissue through the apical foramen and lateral canals, influencing the postoperative pain and periapical healing. The aim of the present study was to evaluate and compare postoperative pain and periapical healing after root canal treatment using different base endodontic sealers.Methodsː Primary root canal treatment was initiated in 63 patients diagnosed with necrotic pulp and apical periodontitis, followed by which the endodontic sealers used for obturation were selected based on the random allocation of the participants to the following groups; Tubli-Seal, AH Plus and BioRoot RCS. Postoperative pain was recorded…

The Parallel Structures Model and the weakening of implosive /s/ in Spanish

2020
