Correction parameters in X-ray fluorescence analysis applying the limit dilution method (LDM)
1992
This paper is a study of the interelemental effect and its correction based on the mathematical model used to develop LDM in XRF analysis. A “compensation coefficient” is defined which is obtained from the quotient of the mass absorption coefficients of the problem and the standard (μs*/μp*). This coefficient compensates the effects produced by interactions between the analyt and the interferences and therefore acts as a correction factor for the interelemental effect within this theoretical model. The model itself establishes a simple relation of the “compensation coefficient” and the Y/H correction parameters for the unknown and the standard. An algorithm is proposed for calculating the “…
Scene-based noise reduction on a smart camera
2012
International audience; Raw output data from CMOS image sensors tends to exhibit significant noise called Fixed-Pattern Noise (FPN) due to on-die variations between pixel photodetectors. FPN is often corrected by subtracting its value, estimated through calibration, from the sensor's raw signal. This paper introduces an on-line scene-based technique for an improved FPN compensation which does not rely on calibration, and hence is more robust to the dynamic changes in the FPN which may occur slowly over time. Development has been done with a special emphasis on real-time hardware implementation on a FPGA-based smart camera. Experimental results on different scenes are depicted showing that t…
Mitigation of self-phase modulation by sinusoidally time varying phase
2018
The propagation of intense ultra-short optical pulses in a Kerr medium such as an optical fibre remains a critical issue for many optical systems. This is because the self-phase modulation (SPM) of the propagating pulse usually causes a severe broadening of the pulse spectrum that is typically accompanied by an oscillatory structure. Several strategies have been proposed and successfully deployed to counteract the deleterious effects of SPM in fiber-optic systems, including spatial or temporal scaling to reduce the impact of nonlinearity. Other approaches rely on the exploitation of the peculiar properties of parabolic shaped pulses and self-similar evolution. However, none of these last te…
Second zero dispersion wavelength measurement through soliton self-frequency shift compensation in suspended core fibre
2008
International audience; A simple experimental technique to evaluate the second zero dispersion wavelength of very small core microstrutured fibres is described. Based on the effect of soliton self-frequency shift and its subsequent compensation in the vicinity of the second zero dispersion. the proposed method is applied to both standard and suspended core microstructured fibres by simply measuring the frequency stabilised soliton spectrum, avoiding any calculation and knowledge of any experimental parameters.
Does the Principle of Compensation Provide a Solid Basis for Establishing Corporate Environmental responsibility: A Case study of Madagascar’s Mining…
2019
The mining sector has been criticized for its lack of environmental responsibility, but a certain amount of progress has been evident. At the same time, a number of developing countries have opted for an environmental management framework underpinned by the principle of compensation. Even though this principle is closely aligned to corporate social responsibility, it does not appear to represent the most effective way of achieving corporate social responsibility. Based on a case study in Madagascar, we examine the application of the principle within a mining project and show that its inadequacy stems from failing to consider the population’s response to the actions taken by companies. In ou…
