The tradeoffs between retail service and exclusivity in distribution: Welfare and policy implications

Abstract This paper examines the welfare tradeoffs between retail service and exclusivity in distribution in a successive duopoly with differentiated retailers. A simple two-stage game is developed to model quantity and retail service competition under two situations, one where retailers operate under exclusivity and one where retailers can sell both products. It is shown that welfare is higher under exclusivity in distribution when the transfer price without exclusivity exceeds that under exclusivity and intra-product and in-store competition are intense. Abstract This case study examines the dynamics of the mobile instant messenger (MIM) market in Korea. MIMs have been disrupting traditional mobile communication services such as voice, SMS, and media content. In response to MIMs, Korean Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) jointly launched a standards-based messenger service called Joyn, which ultimately performed poorly. It is more general than Pawlak’s solution of the problem of the definability of sets, the knowledge of which is incomplete and vague. A trophic niche overlap in native and alien turtle species can lead to competitive interactions whereby allochthonous turtles may outcompete autochthonous individuals and eventually affect viability of natural populations. The European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis) is an autochthonous species threatened by habitat encroachment and competition with the red-eared slider (Trachemys scripta elegans).
