The tradeoffs between retail service and exclusivity in distribution: Welfare and policy implications
2006
Abstract This paper examines the welfare tradeoffs between retail service and exclusivity in distribution in a successive duopoly with differentiated retailers. A simple two-stage game is developed to model quantity and retail service competition under two situations, one where retailers operate under exclusivity and one where retailers can sell both products. It is shown that welfare is higher under exclusivity in distribution when the transfer price without exclusivity exceeds that under exclusivity and intra-product and in-store competition are intense. Our findings call for a detailed analysis of the antitrust treatment of exclusive dealing when interrelated with the provision of retail…
What benefits couldn't ‘Joyn’ enjoy?
2019
Abstract This case study examines the dynamics of the mobile instant messenger (MIM) market in Korea. MIMs have been disrupting traditional mobile communication services such as voice, SMS, and media content. In response to MIMs, Korean Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) jointly launched a standards-based messenger service called Joyn, which ultimately performed poorly. Focusing on Joyn, this study analyses the changing status of MNOs and their counter-strategies against MIMs in the context of the turbulent mobile services market. For the analysis, we use a co-evolutionary framework encompassing technological, market, and regulatory domains and apply a platform competition perspective. The cas…
RETRACTED: Measuring Service Quality in Tourism Industry
2016
Abstract The expansion of the service sector, the stronger competition resulting from globalization and deregulation, and the emergence of new information technologies have accelerated the shift toward a knowledge-based and innovation-driven economy. With the increasing role of tourism in global economy and the growing competition in the global tourism market, the importance of developing quality tourism products has been recognized by both the public and the private tourism sectors. In order to develop quality tourism, organizations need to know what their competitive advantage is and what capabilities they need to grow and maintain. The aim of this paper is to analyze the customer satisfa…
Generalized Rough Sets in Contextual Spaces
1997
This paper presents a generalization of Pawlak’s conception of rough sets [6] and [7]. It is more general than Pawlak’s solution of the problem of the definability of sets, the knowledge of which is incomplete and vague. The authors’ conception is based on conception of contextual space [4], which was inspired by Ziarko’s approach [12] to rough sets. Rough sets introduced by Pawlak [6] are particular cases of contextual rough sets defined in the contextual approximation space. This space is defined axiomatically by means of so called context relations. Every contextual rough set determined by set X can be determined by the union of the lower approximation of X and a subset of the boundary o…
A multiple layered functional data model to support multiple representations and interoperability of GIS
2001
This paper presents a multi-layered functional data model to support multiple representation and information sharing among distributed spatial information systems. The key idea is that a geographical space (foe example an urban space) can be viewed as a set of abstract spatial functionalities on which different application classes can be derived to manipulate objects of the same geographical space and share the same abstract generic functionalities. The object classes define multiple views or representations of a domain. For example in urban management, transportation systems, water supply and sewage systems applications can share generic network functionalities defined by graph treversal o…
How can two competing egg parasitoid species coexist in a host patch?
2013
Interspecific competitions among parasitoids can affect community structures, and, as a consequence at applicative level, biological control programs. For example, competitions can cause local displacement of inferior species or niche separation. However, the coexistence of species attacking the same host is possible when they adopt different strategies to exploit the resource. In this work we evaluated in field and semi-field conditions intraguild interactions between two egg parasitoids, Trissolcus basalis and Ooencyrtus telenomicida exploring egg masses of Nezara viridula. In semi-field trials, pepper plants were covered with mesh net creating small cages with five plants inside. In each…
Intraguild interactions between two egg parasitoids of a true bug: from laboratory to field investigations
2011
Intraguild interactions can play a role in species coexistence and in sizing and shaping community structures. In addition, understanding how competitive interactions between parasitoid guilds can affect pest suppression may improve biological control. Interspecific competitive effects can be divided in “extrinsic competition”, the indirect interactions between adult females searching for or exploiting hosts, and “intrinsic competition”, the competition that occurs between larvae developing in the same host. In this work we performed both laboratory and field investigations to address on intraguild interactions occurring between Trissolcus basalis (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) and Ooencyrtus t…
Outcomes of intraguild interactions between two egg parasitoids in field and semi-field conditions
2012
Intraguild interactions between two egg parasitoids, Trissolcus basalis (Wollaston) and Ooencyrtus telenomicida (Vassiliev) exploring egg masses of the Southern Green Stink Bug Nezara viridula (L.) were investigated in field and semi-field conditions. Field trials were conducted in tomato fields by using sentinel and naturally laid egg masses in 2010 and 2011. Egg parasitoids monitoring, by sentinel egg masses placed weekly on plants during the tomato growing season and recollected one week later, showed that T. basalis occurs from June to October, whereas O. telenomicida occurs mainly in July and August. In the same fields, collections of naturally laid egg masses display different types o…

Stable isotope analysis of trophic niche in two co-occurring native and invasive terrapins, Emys orbicularis and Trachemys scripta elegans
2016
A trophic niche overlap in native and alien turtle species can lead to competitive interactions whereby allochthonous turtles may outcompete autochthonous individuals and eventually affect viability of natural populations. The European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis) is an autochthonous species threatened by habitat encroachment and competition with the red-eared slider (Trachemys scripta elegans). The latter is an invasive species introduced in Europe from midwestern United States as a pet and now widespread in the natural habitats of E. orbicularis. The extent of trophic competition between E. orbicularis and T. s. elegans in northern Italy was assessed by nitrogen and carbon stable isotop…
