Removable sets for intrinsic metric and for holomorphic functions

2019

We study the subsets of metric spaces that are negligible for the infimal length of connecting curves; such sets are called metrically removable. In particular, we show that every totally disconnected set with finite Hausdorff measure of codimension 1 is metrically removable, which answers a question raised by Hakobyan and Herron. The metrically removable sets are shown to be related to other classes of "thin" sets that appeared in the literature. They are also related to the removability problems for classes of holomorphic functions with restrictions on the derivative.

Quasispheres and metric doubling measures

2018

Applying the Bonk-Kleiner characterization of Ahlfors 2-regular quasispheres, we show that a metric two-sphere $X$ is a quasisphere if and only if $X$ is linearly locally connected and carries a weak metric doubling measure, i.e., a measure that deforms the metric on $X$ without much shrinking.

Hydrogen bonding patterns of 7,9-dimethylguanine and its transplatinum(II) complexes

2002

Methylation at the N7 position is one of the most frequently naturally occurring modifications of guanosine. This alteration drastically changes the hydrogen bonding and acid–base properties of the guanine nucleobase. Here we show on the example of the model nucleobase 7,9-dimethylguanine that due to blockage of N7 of the purine ring, new hydrogen bonding patterns occur on the minor groove binding face of this nucleobase involving the ring nitrogen N3 and the exocyclic amino group N2H2. The free 7,9-dimethylguaninium ion and several transplatinum(II) complexes of the this ligand are presented and discussed. Methylation at N7 drastically changes the acid–base and hydrogen bonding properties …

X-Ray and NMR Studies on Host-Guest Inclusion Complex Formation between Crown Ethers and Pyridinium Compounds

1998

Aromatic–aromatic, π–π, and cation–π interactions can be exploited in the preparation of molecular complexes between benzene-substituted crown ethers and pyridium cations. These complexes have been studied in the gas phase, in solution, and in the solid state; the structure of one of the complexes is depicted on the right.

Synthesis of pyrido[2,1-a]isoquinolin-4-ones and oxazino[2,3-a]isoquinolin-4-ones: New inhibitors of mitochondrial respiratory chain

2013

International audience; Benzo[a]quinolizine is an important heterocyclic framework that can be found in numerous bioactive compounds. The general scheme for the synthesis of these compounds was based on the preparation of the appropriate dihydroisoquinolines by Bischler-Napieralski cyclization with good yields, followed by the Pemberton method to form the oxazinones or pyridones derivatives via acyl-ketene imine cyclocondensation. All the synthesized compounds were assayed in vitro for their ability to inhibit mitochondrial respiratory chain. Most of the tested compounds were able to inhibit the integrated electron transfer chain, measured as NADH oxidation, which includes complexes I, III …

Triorganotin(IV) derivatives of 7-amino-2-(methylthio)[1,2,4]triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine-6-carboxylic acid. Synthesis, spectroscopic characterization, …

2010

Triorganotin(IV) complexes of the 7-amino-2-(methylthio)[1,2,4]triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine-6-carboxylic acid (HL), Me 3 SnL(H 2 O), ( 1 ), [ n -Bu 3 SnL] 2 (H 2 O), ( 2 ), Ph 3 SnL(MeOH), ( 3 ), were synthesized by reacting the amino acid with organotin(IV) hydroxides or oxides in refluxing methanol. The complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis, 1 H, 13 C and 119 Sn NMR, IR, Raman and 119 Sn Mossbauer spectroscopic techniques. Single crystal X-ray diffraction data were obtained for compounds ( 2 ) and ( 3 ). Ph 3 SnL(MeOH) presents a trigonal bipyramidal structure with the organic groups on the equatorial plane and the axial positions occupied by a ligand molecule, coordinated …

Cercospora beticola toxins. Part XVII. The role of the beticolin/Mg2+ complexes in their biological activity Study of plasma membrane H+-ATPase, vacu…

1996

Beticolin-1 and beticolin-2, yellow toxins produced by the phytopathogenic fungus Cercospora beticola, inhibit the plasma membrane H(+)-ATPase. Firstly, since beticolins are able to form complexes with Mg2+, the role of the beticolin/Mg2+ complexes in the inhibition of the plasma membrane proton pump has been investigated. Calculations indicate that beticolins could exist under several forms, in the H(+)-ATPase assay mixture, both free or complexed with Mg2+. However, the percentage inhibition of the H(+)-ATPase activity is correlated to the concentration of one single form of beticolin, the dimeric neutral complex Mg2H2B2, which appears to be the active form involved in the H(+)-ATPase inh…

Pyruvate kinase type M2: a crossroad in the tumor metabolome.

2002

Cell proliferation is a process that consumes large amounts of energy. A reduction in the nutrient supply can lead to cell death by ATP depletion, if cell proliferation is not limited. A key sensor for this regulation is the glycolytic enzyme pyruvate kinase, which determines whether glucose carbons are channelled to synthetic processes or used for glycolytic energy production. In unicellular organisms pyruvate kinase is regulated by ATP, ADP and AMP, by ribose 5-P, the precursor of the nucleic acid synthesis, and by the glycolytic intermediate fructose 1,6-P2 (FBP), thereby adapting cell proliferation to nutrient supply. The mammalian pyruvate kinase isoenzyme type M2 (M2-PK) displays the …

Pyruvate fermentation by Oenococcus oeni and Leuconostoc mesenteroides and role of pyruvate dehydrogenase in anaerobic fermentation.

2005

ABSTRACT The heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria Oenococcus oeni and Leuconostoc mesenteroides are able to grow by fermentation of pyruvate as the carbon source (2 pyruvate → 1 lactate + 1 acetate + 1 CO 2 ). The growth yields amount to 4.0 and 5.3 g (dry weight)/mol of pyruvate, respectively, suggesting formation of 0.5 mol ATP/mol pyruvate. Pyruvate is oxidatively decarboxylated by pyruvate dehydrogenase to acetyl coenzyme A, which is then converted to acetate, yielding 1 mol of ATP. For NADH reoxidation, one further pyruvate molecule is reduced to lactate. The enzymes of the pathway were present after growth on pyruvate, and genome analysis showed the presence of the corresponding st…

Inducible and reversible inhibition of mirna-mediated gene repression in vivo

2021

Although virtually all gene networks are predicted to be controlled by miRNAs, the contribution of this important layer of gene regulation to tissue homeostasis in adult animals remains unclear. Gain and loss-of-function experiments have provided key insights into the specific function of individual miRNAs, but effective genetic tools to study the functional consequences of global inhibition of miRNA activity in vivo are lacking. Here we report the generation and characterization of a genetically engineered mouse strain in which miRNA-mediated gene repression can be reversibly inhibited without affecting miRNA biogenesis or abundance. We demonstrate the usefulness of this strategy by invest…
