On the arithmetic of a family of degree-two K3 surfaces

2018

Let $\mathbb{P}$ denote the weighted projective space with weights $(1,1,1,3)$ over the rationals, with coordinates $x,y,z,$ and $w$; let $\mathcal{X}$ be the generic element of the family of surfaces in $\mathbb{P}$ given by \begin{equation*} X\colon w^2=x^6+y^6+z^6+tx^2y^2z^2. \end{equation*} The surface $\mathcal{X}$ is a K3 surface over the function field $\mathbb{Q}(t)$. In this paper, we explicitly compute the geometric Picard lattice of $\mathcal{X}$, together with its Galois module structure, as well as derive more results on the arithmetic of $\mathcal{X}$ and other elements of the family $X$.

Surface Activity of Humic Substances Within Peat Profile

2012

Humic substances are able to reduce the surface tension of their solutions and thus can act as surface-active substances in natural environment and possibly also for industrial applications. The ability to influence the surface tension of humic substance solutions depends on their origin. The objective of this study is a comparison of the ability of humic substances from peat profile to influence the surface tension of their solutions and identification of the structural characteristics of peat humic acids, determining their surfactant properties. Humic acids isolated from peat demonstrated significant impact of the surface tension of their solutions – they act as weak surfactants. The surf…

Dark Spots in Trade Theory: Early Testing Attempts

2020

The beginnings of the economic theory correspond to philosophers’ attempts to explain why and how do countries trade with each other. Yet even more puzzling was the question how should countries trade? It is no surprise that despite the formidable developments of the theory in the last 200 years plus, there still are dark spots in the economics of trade. Globalization has rendered the issue even murkier. Beside the fact that international trade cannot be insulated from other economic domains, which makes it inadequate for experiments, but even testing itself is cumbersome. Only, evidence on such a complex field as international trade is by no means easy to come by.

A multi-methodology and sustainability-supporting framework for implementation and assessment of a holistic building renovation

Complexity Theory for a New Managerial Paradigm: A Research Framework

2015

In this work, we supply a theoretical framework of how organizations can embed complexity management and sustainable development into their policies and actions. The proposed framework may lead to a new management paradigm, attempting to link the main concepts of complexity theory, change management, knowledge management, sustainable development, and cybernetics. We highlight how the processes of organizational change have occurred as a result of the move to adapt to the changes in the various global and international business environments and how this transformation has led to the shift toward the present innovation economy. We also point how organizational change needs to deal with sustai…

Development of T cell clones reactive to two defined restriction elements in conjunction with two defined epitopes of antigen

1985

A previously described pig insulin (PI)-specific T cell line of (B10 X B10.BR)F1 origin was assayed for its reactivity with species variants of insulin in the presence of antigen-presenting cells (APC) of various H-2 haplotypes. In addition to its reactivity with PI and bovine insulin (BI) in the context of syngeneic F1 (H-2b X k)-APC, a weak cross-reactivity was observed with parental B10 (H-2b)-APC and BI but not PI. The cross-reactive cells could be selected out by several restimulations with the combination of BI and B10-APC. From the resulting, strongly cross-reactive T cell line several interleukin 2-dependent sublines were developed which did not require antigen-specific restimulatio…

Protein Kinase C-dependent Ubiquitination and Clathrin-mediated Endocytosis of the Cationic Amino Acid Transporter CAT-1*

2011

Cationic amino acid transporter 1 (CAT-1) is responsible for the bulk of the uptake of cationic amino acids in most mammalian cells. Activation of protein kinase C (PKC) leads to down-regulation of the cell surface CAT-1. To examine the mechanisms of PKC-induced down-regulation of CAT-1, a functional mutant of CAT-1 (CAT-1-HA-GFP) was generated in which a hemagglutinin antigen (HA) epitope tag was introduced into the second extracellular loop and GFP was attached to the carboxyl terminus. CAT-1-HA-GFP was stably expressed in porcine aorthic endothelial and human epithelial kidney (HEK) 293 cells. Using the HA antibody internalization assay we have demonstrated that PKC-dependent endocytosis…

Chapter 35 Complex regional pain syndrome

2006

Publisher Summary This chapter describes complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) as changes of muscles and bones distant from the primary tissue damage. It causes both acute pain and excitation of the sympathetic nervous system. The chapter classifies CRPS into two clinical types: the “primarily warm” type, which usually develops post-traumatically and in which skin temperature is increased on the affected side; and CRPS cases, which manifest with a cold skin from the beginning. This “primarily cold” type more often develops after minor trauma or even spontaneously. The chapter reviews that “primary cold” CRPS is harder to treat and tends to become chronic. Symptoms of CRPS are not stable; th…

Information-theoretic assessment of cardiovascular variability during postural and mental stress

2016

This study was aimed at investigating the individual and combined effects of postural and mental stress on short-term cardiovascular regulation. To this end, we applied measures taken from the emerging framework of information dynamics on the beat-to-beat spontaneous variability of RR interval and systolic arterial pressure (SAP) measured from healthy subjects in the resting supine position and during the separate and simultaneous execution of experimental protocols performing head-up tilt (HUT) and mental arithmetics (MA). The information stored in RR interval variability, a measure inversely related to the complexity of the time series, increased significantly during HUT and HUT+MA compar…
