Embedded Real-Time Surveillance Using Multimodal Mean Background Modeling

2008

Automated video surveillance applications require accurate separation of foreground and background image content. Cost-sensitive embedded platforms place real-time performance and efficiency demands on techniques to accomplish this task. In this chapter, we evaluate pixel-level foreground extraction techniques for a low-cost integrated surveillance system. We introduce a new adaptive background modeling technique, multimodal mean (MM), which balances accuracy, performance, and efficiency to meet embedded system requirements. Our evaluation compares several pixel-level foreground extraction techniques in terms of their computation and storage requirements, and functional accuracy for three r…

An Innovative Similarity Measure for Sentence Plagiarism Detection

2016

We propose and experimentally assess Semantic Word Error Rate (SWER), an innovative similarity measure for sentence plagiarism detection. SWER introduces a complex approach based on latent semantic analysis, which is capable of outperforming the accuracy of competitor methods in plagiarism detection. We provide principles and functionalities of SWER, and we complement our analytical contribution by means of a significant preliminary experimental analysis. Derived results are promising, and confirm to use the goodness of our proposal.

Characterisation and optimal design of a new double sampling c chart

2019

This paper proposes a new double sampling scheme for c control chart (DS-c), which was designed to improve the performance of c chart or to reduce the inspection cost. The mathematical expression required to do an exact evaluation of ARL and ASN is deduced. Further, a bi-objective genetic algorithm is implemented to obtain the optimal design of the DS-c scheme. This optimisation is aimed to simultaneously minimising the error probability type II and the ASN, guaranteeing a desired level for the error probability type I. A performance comparison between the double sampling (DS), fixed parameters (FP), variable simple size (VSS) and exponential weighted moving average (EWMA) schemes for the c…

(Photo)electrocatalytic Versus Heterogeneous Photocatalytic Carbon Dioxide Reduction

2021

The present review summarizes some of the main results achieved in electrochemical, photocatalytic, and (photo)-electrocatalytic systems for the reduction of carbon dioxide. After a preliminary survey of the electrocatalytic and photocatalytic systems in terms of materials used, efficiencies, operating conditions, and product distribution, it is shown how the combination of the two approaches affords often higher efficiency than the single technologies and allows better control of the product distribution. In fact, the peculiar energetic distribution at the interface of irradiated semiconductors under opportune electrical bias enables enhancement of the spatial separation of the photogenera…

Relationship between Electron Affinity and Half-Wave Reduction Potential: A Theoretical Study on Cyclic Electron-Acceptor Compounds.

2016

A high-level ab initio protocol to compute accurate electron affinities and half-wave reduction potentials is presented and applied for a series of electron-acceptor compounds with potential interest in organic electronics and redox flow batteries. The comprehensive comparison between the theoretical and experimental electron affinities not only proves the reliability of the theoretical G3(MP2) approach employed but also calls into question certain experimental measurements, which need to be revised. By using the thermodynamic cycle for the one-electron attachment reaction A+e- →A- , theoretical estimates for the first half-wave reduction potential have been computed along the series of ele…

Observations on the use of a sulfuric acid medium for As(V) to As(III) reduction in lodimetric titrations: Application to the determination of total …

1991

Abstract The use of a sulfuric rather than a hydrochloric acid medium for the reduction of As(V) to As(III) by iodide is proposed. Optimum conditions of acid concentration, amount of sodium hydroxide, and time and temperature are established to achieve quantitative reduction. The optimized reduction procedure was applied to the iodimetric determination of total arsenic and compared to a procedure that employs a hydrochloric acid medium. A systematic error of 0.04% was found for the method with a sulfuric acid medium opposed to 0.05% for the method with a hydrochloric acid medium in the reduction step. The proposed modified iodimetric method has been successfully used with some organic sampl…

Formation and function of a complement-activating enzyme generated from factors of guinea pig serum and cobra venom

1971

An enzymatic complex can be formed by factors from guinea pig serum and cobra venom, which is able to activate C3 bypassing C1, C4 and C2. Formation and action of the enzyme are described. The action on C3 results in an activation of the terminal complement components and in membrane destruction provided suitable membrane receptors are available.

A New pH-Dependent Macrocyclic Rhodamine B-Based Fluorescent Probe for Copper Detection in White Wine

2019

For efficiently measuring copper (II) ions in the acidic media of white wine, a new chemosensor based on rhodamine B coupled to a tetraazamacrocyclic ring (13aneN4CH2NH2) was designed and synthesized by a one-pot reaction using ethanol as a green solvent. The obtained chemosensor was characterized via NMR, UV and fluorescent spectra. It was marked with no color emission under neutral pH conditions, with a pink color emission under acidic conditions, and a magenta color emission under acidic conditions where copper (II) ions were present. The sensitivity towards copper (II) ions was tested and verified over Ca2+, Ag+, Zn2+, Mg2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Fe2+, Pb2+, Cd2+, Fe3+, and Mn2+, with a detection…
