Statistical characterisation of heavy metal contents inParacentrotus lividusfrom Mediterranean Sea

2014

This work focuses on the estimation of Hg, As, Cr, Ni, Cu, V, Cd and Pb by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry in 135 adult specimens of Paracentrotus lividus collected in different coastal areas of Sicily (Gela, Punta Secca, Ragusa (RG), Siracusa, Priolo, Catania, Messina, Milazzo, Brolo and Filicudi), in order to monitor the Mediterranean marine ecosystem by use of sea urchin as bioindicator. Moreover, the paper deals with the statistical classification of the tested samples according to the sampling area based on metal concentrations. The descriptive statistics findings were obtained and, a starting multivariate matrix was built. Data-sets were subjected to Kruskal-Wallis test t…

The human gene for mannan-binding lectin-associated serine protease-2 (MASP-2), the effector component of the lectin route of complement activation, …

2001

The proteases of the lectin pathway of complement activation, MASP-1 and MASP-2, are encoded by two separate genes. The MASP1 gene is located on chromosome 3q27, the MASP2 gene on chromosome 1p36.23-31. The genes for the classical complement activation pathway proteases, C1r and C1s, are linked on chromosome 12p13. We have shown that the MASP2 gene encodes two gene products, the 76 kDa MASP-2 serine protease and a plasma protein of 19 kDa, termed MAp19 or sMAP. Both gene products are components of the lectin pathway activation complex. We present the complete primary structure of the human MASP2 gene and the tight cluster that this locus forms with non-complement genes. A comparison of the …

Subcomponent self‐assembly of a cyclic tetranuclear Fe(II) helicate in a highly diastereoselective self‐sorting manner

2019

Abstract An enantiomerically pure diamine based on the 4,15‐difunctionalized [2.2]paracyclophane scaffold and 2‐formylpyridine self‐assemble into an optically pure cyclic metallosupramolecular Fe4L6 helicate upon mixing with iron(II) ions in a diastereoselective subcomponent self‐assembly process. The cyclic assembly results from steric strain that prevents the formation of a smaller linear dinuclear triple‐stranded helicate, and hence, leads to the larger strain‐free assembly that fulfils the maximum occupancy rule. Interestingly, use of the racemic diamine also leads to a racemic mixture of the homochiral cyclic helicates as the major product in a highly diastereoselective narcissistic ch…

The on-line curvilinear component analysis (onCCA) for real-time data reduction

2015

Real time pattern recognition applications often deal with high dimensional data, which require a data reduction step which is only performed offline. However, this loses the possibility of adaption to a changing environment. This is also true for other applications different from pattern recognition, like data visualization for input inspection. Only linear projections, like the principal component analysis, can work in real time by using iterative algorithms while all known nonlinear techniques cannot be implemented in such a way and actually always work on the whole database at each epoch. Among these nonlinear tools, the Curvilinear Component Analysis (CCA), which is a non-convex techni…

Dimensionality reduction via regression on hyperspectral infrared sounding data

2014

This paper introduces a new method for dimensionality reduction via regression (DRR). The method generalizes Principal Component Analysis (PCA) in such a way that reduces the variance of the PCA scores. In order to do so, DRR relies on a deflationary process in which a non-linear regression reduces the redundancy between the PC scores. Unlike other nonlinear dimensionality reduction methods, DRR is easy to apply, it has out-of-sample extension, it is invertible, and the learned transformation is volume-preserving. These properties make the method useful for a wide range of applications, especially in very high dimensional data in general, and for hyperspectral image processing in particular…

A Proposal for Modelling Usability in a Holistic MDD Method

2014

Holistic methods for Model-Driven Development (MDD) aim to model all the system features in a conceptual model. This conceptual model is the input for a model compiler that can generate software systems by means of automatic transformations. However, in general, MDD methods focus on modelling the structure and functionality of systems, relegating the interaction and usability features to manual implementations at the last steps of the software development process. Some usability features are strongly related to the functionality of the system and their inclusion is not so easy. In order to facilitate the inclusion of functional usability features from the first steps of the development proc…

Shelf life assessment of industrial durum wheat bread as a function of packaging system

2017

This study compared the effect of different packaging systems on industrial durum wheat bread shelf-life, with regard to thermoformed packaging (TF) and flow-packaging (FP). Two TFs having different thickness and one FP were compared by assessing physico-chemical and sensorial properties and volatile compounds of sliced bread during 90 days of storage. Texture, aw and bread moisture varied according to a first-order kinetic model, with FP samples ageing faster than TFs. Sensorial features such as consistency, stale odor, and sour odor, increased their intensity during storage. Furans decreased, whereas hexanal increased. The Principal Component Analysis of the whole dataset pointed out that…
