On Using a Hierarchy of Twofold Resource Allocation Automata to Solve Stochastic Nonlinear Resource Allocation Problems

2007

Recent trends in AI attempt to solve difficult NP-hard problems using intelligent techniques so as to obtain approximately-optimal solutions. In this paper, we consider a family of such problems which fall under the general umbrella of "knapsack-like" problems, and demonstrate how we can solve all of them fast and accurately using a hierarchy of Learning Automata (LA). In a multitude of real-world situations, resources must be allocated based on incomplete and noisy information, which often renders traditional resource allocation techniques ineffective. This paper addresses one such class of problems, namely, Stochastic Non-linear Fractional Knapsack Problems. We first present a completely …

Modelling energy storage systems using Fourier analysis: An application for smart grids optimal management

2014

In this paper, a new and efficient model for variables representation, named F-coding, in optimal power dispatch problems for smart electrical distribution grids is proposed. In particular, an application devoted to optimal energy dispatch of Distributed Energy Resources including ideal storage devices is here considered. Electrical energy storage systems, such as any other component that must meet an integral capacity constraint in optimal dispatch problems, have to show the same energy level at the beginning and at the end of the considered timeframe for operation. The use of zero-integral functions, such as sinusoidal functions, for the synthesis of the charge and discharge course of bat…

MCR-ALS on metabolic networks: Obtaining more meaningful pathways

2015

[EN] With the aim of understanding the flux distributions across a metabolic network, i.e. within living cells, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) has been proposed to obtain a set of orthogonal components (pathways) capturing most of the variance in the flux data. The problems with this method are (i) that no additional information can be included in the model, and (ii) that orthogonality imposes a hard constraint, not always reasonably. To overcome these drawbacks, here we propose to use a more flexible approach such as Multivariate Curve Resolution-Alternating Least Squares (MCR-ALS) to obtain this set of biological pathways through the network. By using this method, different constraint…

The squared symmetric FastICA estimator

2017

In this paper we study the theoretical properties of the deflation-based FastICA method, the original symmetric FastICA method, and a modified symmetric FastICA method, here called the squared symmetric FastICA. This modification is obtained by replacing the absolute values in the FastICA objective function by their squares. In the deflation-based case this replacement has no effect on the estimate since the maximization problem stays the same. However, in the symmetric case we obtain a different estimate which has been mentioned in the literature, but its theoretical properties have not been studied at all. In the paper we review the classic deflation-based and symmetric FastICA approaches…

Representation and estimation of spectral reflectances using projection on PCA and wavelet bases

2008

In this article, we deal with the problem of spectral reflectance function representation and estimation in the context of multispectral imaging. Because the reconstruction of such functions is an inverse problem, slight variations in input data completely skew the expected results. Therefore, stabilizing the reconstruction process is necessary. To do this, we propose to use wavelets as basis functions, and we compare those with Fourier and PCA bases. We present the idea and compare these three methods, which belong to the class of linear models. The PCA method is training-set dependent and confirms its robustness when applied to reflectance estimation of the training sets. Fourier and wave…

An Introduction to Kernel Methods

2009

Machine learning has experienced a great advance in the eighties and nineties due to the active research in artificial neural networks and adaptive systems. These tools have demonstrated good results in many real applications, since neither a priori knowledge about the distribution of the available data nor the relationships among the independent variables should be necessarily assumed. Overfitting due to reduced training data sets is controlled by means of a regularized functional which minimizes the complexity of the machine. Working with high dimensional input spaces is no longer a problem thanks to the use of kernel methods. Such methods also provide us with new ways to interpret the cl…

Deflation-Based FastICA With Adaptive Choices of Nonlinearities

2014

Deflation-based FastICA is a popular method for independent component analysis. In the standard deflation-base d approach the row vectors of the unmixing matrix are extracted one after another always using the same nonlinearities. In prac- tice the user has to choose the nonlinearities and the efficiency and robustness of the estimation procedure then strongly depends on this choice as well as on the order in which the components are extracted. In this paper we propose a novel adaptive two- stage deflation-based FastICA algorithm that (i) allows one to use different nonlinearities for different components and (ii) optimizes the order in which the components are extracted. Based on a consist…

Foods and food components in the Mediterranean diet: supporting overall effects.

2014

Background It is unknown whether individuals at high cardiovascular risk sustain a benefit in cardiovascular disease from increased olive oil consumption. The aim was to assess the association between total olive oil intake, its varieties (extra virgin and common olive oil) and the risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality in a Mediterranean population at high cardiovascular risk. Methods We included 7,216 men and women at high cardiovascular risk, aged 55 to 80 years, from the PREvención con DIeta MEDiterránea (PREDIMED) study, a multicenter, randomized, controlled, clinical trial. Participants were randomized to one of three interventions: Mediterranean Diets supplemented with nuts or …

Metacommunities from bacteria to birds: stronger environmental selection in mediterranean than in tropical ponds

2021

AbstractThe metacommunity concept provides a theoretical framework that aims at explaining organism distributions by a combination of environmental filtering, dispersal and drift. With the development of statistical tools to quantify and partially isolate the role of each of these processes, empirical metacommunity studies have multiplied worldwide. However, few works attempt a multi-taxon approach and even fewer compare two distant biogeographical regions using the same methodology. Under this framework, we tested the expectation that temperate (mediterranean-climate) pond metacommunities would be more influenced by environmental and spatial processes than tropical ones, because of stronge…

Climate driven life histories: the case of the Mediterranean Storm petrel

2014

Seabirds are affected by changes in the marine ecosystem. The influence of climatic factors on marine food webs can be reflected in long-term seabird population changes. We modelled the survival and recruitment of the Mediterranean storm petrel (Hydrobates pelagicus melitensis) using a 21-year mark-recapture dataset involving almost 5000 birds. We demonstrated a strong influence of prebreeding climatic conditions on recruitment age and of rainfall and breeding period conditions on juvenile survival. The results suggest that the juvenile survival rate of the Mediterranean subspecies may not be negatively affected by the predicted features of climate change, i.e., warmer summers and lower rai…
