Solid state joining of thin hybrid sandwiches made of steel and polymer: A feasibility study

2020

The growing demand for more environmentally friendly vehicles has led to an increased use of light materials in the transportation industry with the aim to reduce structural weight, fuel consumption, and gas emissions, thereby boosting cost-effectiveness and recyclable properties. Complex multi-material steel-based components would allow to improve mechanical properties and minimize weight even further. In particular, new sandwich materials made by steel outer skins and a polymeric internal layer seems very promising for obtaining mechanical performance and lightness at the same time. Unfortunately, traditional welding techniques, like arc welding, laser welding, and resistance spot welding…

Comparison between aluminum alloys behavior in incremental sheet metal forming process of frustum pyramid shaped parts

2021

Abstract Single point incremental forming is a new emerging technology, used mainly for prototype development or small series production, with good prospects in industrial implementation. However, the parts manufactured through this process often presents low accuracy, thus the industrial implementation is yet limited. Incremental forming process can be done with the help of different technological equipment, such as industrial robots and numerically controlled machines. Since the process is still in development phase, it is a good practice to use finite element analysis software packages in order to reduce time and costs to produce accurate parts. The aim of this paper is to investigate th…

Correlation of epoxy material properties with the toughening effect of fullerene-like WS2 nanoparticles

2016

Abstract This work deals with the toughening effect of inorganic, fullerene-like WS2 (IF-WS2) nanoparticles (NPs) on epoxy. It has been hypothesized that this toughening effect depends on the epoxy’s cross-link density, its molecular defect fraction or its reference fracture toughness K Ic . Seven different epoxy systems were filled with 0.5% laboratory-made IF-WS2 NPs by mass and investigated in order to analyze which material properties are determining the toughening effect. These NPs were similar to commercially available IF-WS2 NPs, but their agglomerates could not be broken up as successfully and they yielded less toughening effect. The cross-link density of the epoxies measured via dy…

Formation and transformation of carbon nanoparticles under electron irradiation.

2004

This article reviews the phenomena occurring during irradiation of graphitic nanoparticles with high–energy electrons. A brief introduction to the physics of the interaction between energetic electrons and solids is given with particular emphasis on graphitic materials. Irradiation effects are discussed, starting from microscopic mechanisms that lead to structural alterations of the graphite lattice. It is shown how random displacements of the atoms and their subsequent rearrangements eventually lead to topological changes of the nanoparticles. Examples are the formation of carbon onions, morphological changes of carbon nanotubes, or the coalescence of fullerenes or nanotubes under electron…

Radiation induced generation of non-bridging oxygen hole center in silica: Intrinsic and extrinsic processes

2007

Abstract The generation of non-bridging oxygen hole center ( Si–O ) was investigated in a wide variety of natural (fused quartz) and synthetic silica samples exposed to different γ- and β-irradiation doses by looking at its optical bands. We distinguish two different generation processes: intrinsic associated with the cleavage of Si–O bond and characterized by a sublinear law and extrinsic due to the conversion of OH precursor characterized by a growth curve with a saturating tendency. The interplay between the two processes and the role of H are discussed.

Growth of paramagnetic defects by gamma rays irradiation in oxygen-deficient silica

2005

Abstract We report an electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) study of gamma rays irradiation effects on an oxygen-deficient silica obtained from fused quartz. We have found that three types of E′ centers, E α ′ , E γ ′ and E δ ′ , and a paramagnetic defect in a spin triplet state (S = 1) are induced. The EPR signals dependence on the microwave power have been investigated. The concentrations of these centers as a function of gamma ray irradiation show that for high dose a limit value is reached suggesting a generation process from precursors.

Influence of a density mismatch on TMPTMA shells nonconcentricity

2011

Some laser target designs require low-density organic foam shells to study fusion on the French high-power laser laser mega joule. Low-density trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate foam shells composed of C, H, and O, 2 mm diameter, 100-μm wall thickness, and 250 mg cm−3 density are synthesized by a microencapsulation technique using a droplet generator. These shells have to reach a sphericity higher than 99.9% and a nonconcentricity (NC) lower than 1%. The wall thickness variation is one of the most difficult specifications to meet. An important factor in reducing this defect is the density matching between the three phases of the emulsion at polymerization temperature. The influence of a den…

Experimental studies on the detachment of multi-walled carbon nanotubes by a mobile liquid interface

2017

International audience; Retention and detachment of colloidal particles from surfaces is often considered only in terms of spontaneous chemical dispersion when the surface is already fully submerged. Nevertheless, interfacial processes, where the particles are caught on a mobile liquid contact line by capillary effects are ubiquitous. Theoretical description of such interfacial processes exist for spherical microcolloids, while for anisotropic shapes the literature is limited. Arc-discharge synthesized multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWNT) material contains besides the very anisotropic tubes also irregular amorphous carbon particles (ACP) that both are strongly hydrophobic. As a water–air–soli…

3 Probing and Modelling of Galvanic Coupling Phenomena in Localized Corrosion

2011

The basic driving force of localized corrosion or corrosion protection in numerous cases is the galvanic coupling of which the dimensional aspect is fixed by a combination of scales regarding interfacial processes or properties. At the electrolyte–metal interface, it is necessary to consider the microstructure (including all real-time modification induced for example by applied stresses), the possible chemical changes at the surface of the material, and the electrolyte conductivity contribution, among others factors.
