Layer-Wise Discontinuous Galerkin Methods for Piezoelectric Laminates

2020

In this work, a novel high-order formulation for multilayered piezoelectric plates based on the combination of variable-order interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin methods and general layer-wise plate theories is presented, implemented and tested. The key feature of the formulation is the possibility to tune the order of the basis functions in both the in-plane approximation and the through-the-thickness expansion of the primary variables, namely displacements and electric potential. The results obtained from the application to the considered test cases show accuracy and robustness, thus confirming the developed technique as a supplementary computational tool for the analysis and design o…

Effect of the surrounding aeration on microcapillary electrochemical cell experiments

2008

In the microelectrochemical capillary cell technique a silicone rubber gasket is used to avoid any electrolyte leakage between the pulled glass capillary and the working electrode (the metallic tested material). In this study, it is demonstrated that the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is strongly affected by the use of the silicone rubber. Experiments under a surrounding argon gas shielding of the pulled capillary in contact with the metallic surface have been performed showing a large effect on the ORR. Considering the high permeation rate of oxygen through silicone, the decrease of the reaction rate observed experimentally was validated by FEM modelling assuming that the air/silicone/wat…

Carbon nanotube field-effect devices with asymmetric electrode configuration by contact geometry

2014

We have studied experimentally the conductive properties of single walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) based field-effect type devices, with different contact geometries at the connecting electrode. The device designs are asymmetric with one end of the SWNT having the metal electrode deposited on top and immersing it, while at the other end, the SWNT is on top of the electrode. The devices were made with either gold or palladium as electrode materials, of which the latter resulted in different behavior of the different contact types. This is argued to be caused by the existence of a thin insulating layer of surface adsorbents on the palladium, possibly Pd5O4, the effect of which is enhanced by th…

EXAFS studies on the local structure of Er3+ ions in silica xerogels co-doped with aluminium

2001

The local environment around Er3+ ions in wet and densified (at 900°C) silica xerogels (pure and co-doped with aluminium) has been studied at the Er L3-edge by X-ray absorption spectroscopy using the fluorescence detection technique. The radial distribution functions (RDF), reconstructed from X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), show several changes in the local co-ordination of erbium ions upon densification: shortening of the Er-O and Er-Si/Al distances, decrease of the co-ordination numbers and broadening of the Er-O RDF. The effect of Al co-doping is clearly discerned by EXAFS in both the first and second co-ordination shells for densified gels and mainly in the second shell for wet…

Nonlinear free vibrations of composite structures via the X-Ritz method

2020

The analysis of large amplitude vibrations of thin-walled cracked structures build as plate assembly is considered in this study. The problem is addressed via a Ritz approach, called X-Ritz, based on the first order shear deformation theory and von K´arm´an’s geometric nonlinearity assumptions. The trial functions are expressed as series of regular orthogonal polynomial products supplemented with special functions able to represent the crack behaviour; boundary functions are used to guarantee the fulfillment of the kinematic boundary conditions. Results are presented, which illustrate the influence of cracks on the stiffening effect due to large amplitude vibrations.

X-ray absorption spectroscopy of Cu-doped $WO_{3}$ films for use inelectrochemical metallization cell memory

2014

Abstract We have performed the first synchrotron radiation X-ray absorption spectroscopy (EXAFS/XANES) study of the local atomic and electronic structure around Cu and W ions in WO 3 /Cu/WO 3 /Si and WO 3 /Cu/Si multilayered structures, aimed for the application in the electrochemical metallization cell memory. The influence of low-temperature annealing at 135 °C has been investigated in details, and a structural model of Cu-doped WO 3 films is proposed.

Reclaimed asphalt test specimen preparation assisted by image analysis

2015

This paper presents a laboratory investigation aimed at establishing a protocol for the production of homogeneous asphalt mixtures test specimens, incorporating reclaimed asphalt by using a gyratory compactor with coring and trimming works. Stone mastic asphalt specimens were compacted at the previously identified target densities with the final aim of obtaining specimens with a fixed and homogeneous air void distribution. A microstructural study was conducted to characterize the homogeneity in the air void distribution using X-ray computed tomography (CT) combined with image analysis techniques. The study concluded that the gyratory compactor is suitable for producing homogeneous test spec…

Modeling hexanal production in oxido-reducing conditions by the yeast Yarrowia lipolytica

2009

International audience; Hexanal produced by cells of a recombinant Yarrowia lipolytica yeast expressing the hydroperoxide lyase (HPL) from green bell pepper fruit was studied under oxido-reducing conditions using the reducing dithiotreitol and oxidizing potassium ferricyanide compounds. The combined effect of pH, linoleic acid 13-hydroperoxides concentration, temperature and oxido-reducing molecules on the hexanal production was studied. Significant positive effects for the hexanal production were found using high concentrations of hydroperoxides (100 mM, 30 g/L). Adding reducing molecules enhanced significantly hexanal production while the oxidizing molecules had an inhibitory effect. Comb…

An insight on the thermo-mechanical behaviour of a shale

2016

In recent years, several shale formations have been employed in geo-energy related engineering fields that foresee the presence of high thermal loads or significant temperature variations. Such thermal conditions are related to a need to reach great depths (several hundred of meters), as in the case of CO2 sequestration and Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS) technologies, or to the presence of thermal sources, as in the context of nuclear waste geological disposal. In addition, thermal changes can occur in shale formations through the injection of drilling and fracturing fluids at great depths, where a higher temperature with respect to the one of the injected fluid is encountered as a result…
