Rietveld refinement study of vanadium distribution in V+4–ZrSiO4 solid solutions obtained from gels
2002
Abstract Vanadium-containing zircon gel precursors with nominal compositions Vx–ZrSiO4 with x=0.0, 0.004, 0.01, 0.04 and 0.2 were prepared by a previously reported colloidal sol-gel technique and annealed for 30 h at 1400 °C. The Rietveld refinement of the structures by X-ray powder diffraction confirms previous results concerning the limit of solubility of V+4 in the zircon structure. The new finding regarding with the entry of V+4 in the Zr+4 site for zircon doped with high contents of vanadium is in accordance with reported results.
Flexural vibrations of discontinuous layered elastically bonded beams
2018
Abstract This paper addresses the dynamic flexural behavior of layered elastically bonded beams carrying an arbitrary number of elastic translational supports and rotational joints. The beams are referred to as discontinuous for the discontinuities of response variables at the application points of supports/joints. The Euler-Bernoulli hypothesis is assumed to hold for each layer separately, and a linear constitutive relation between the horizontal interlayer slip and the interlaminar shear force is considered. Based on the theory of generalized functions to handle the discontinuities of response variables due to supports/joints, exact beam modes are obtained from a characteristic equation b…
Cellulose-inorganic hybrids of strongly reduced thermal conductivity
2022
Abstract The employment of atomic layer deposition and spin coating techniques for preparing inorganic-organic hybrid multilayer structures of alternating ZnO-CNC layers was explored in this study. Helium ion microscopy and X-ray reflectivity showed the superlattice formation for the nanolaminate structures and atomic force microscopy established the efficient control of the CNCs surface coverage on the Al-doped ΖnO by manipulating the concentration of the spin coating solution. Thickness characterization of the hybrid structures was performed via both ellipsometry and X-ray reflectivity and the thermal conductivity was examined by time domain thermoreflectance technique. It appears that ev…
Salt spray fog ageing of hybrid composite/metal rivet joints for automotive applications
2017
Abstract The present experimental investigation aims to investigate the effect of salt-fog exposition on the mechanical behaviour of composite/metal riveted joints. To this aim, two kinds of joint were exposed to salt-fog environmental conditions according to ASTM B117 standard, for fifteen weeks. In particular, two composite laminates (i.e. glass fibre and carbon fibre/epoxy composites) were used as composite substrate joined with the metal substrate (i.e. aluminium alloy Al 6060). Single-lap shear tests were carried out in order to evaluate the evolution of the mechanical performances and the damage mechanisms of the riveted joints during the ageing exposition. The results evidence that t…
Mechanism of Formation of TiO2-Doped Mullites from Heated Single-Phase Gels Investigated by Structural and Microstructural Parameters
2008
An analysis of the microstructure of TiO 2 -doped mullites prepared from monophasic gels thermally treated in the temperature range 900°-1600°C is reported. Two series of gels with nominal compositions 3(Al 2-x Ti x O 3 ) ·2(SiO 2 ) and 2(Al 2-x Ti x O 3 )·(SiO 2 ), in the range 0≤x≤0.15, were prepared. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to follow the structural and textural evolution from gels to the final doped mullites. The crystallite sizes and microstrains were determined by linewidth refinements of XRD patterns using the integral breadth method of Langford and the Warren-Averbach analysis. XRD patterns showed the formation of Al 2 TiO 5 and…
Aging resistance of bio-epoxy jute-basalt hybrid composites as novel multilayer structures for cladding
2017
Abstract Aging resistance of jute reinforced laminates is compared with two jute/basalt hybrid laminates prepared with different stacking sequences (i.e., sandwich and intercalated configuration). To this aim, composites are exposed to cyclic conditions comprising hygrothermal stress and UV radiation to promote an accelerated aging, for a period of 84 days. Specimens of each laminate are tested after 14, 28, 56 and 84 days, respectively. Quasi-static flexural tests, Charpy impact tests and dynamic mechanical tests are performed according to international ASTM and ISO standards. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry are used to evaluate the morpholog…
Control of barium ferrite decomposition during spark plasma sintering: Towards nanostructured samples with anisotropic magnetic properties
2014
Abstract The sintering of barium ferrite (BaM) nano-sized powders by spark plasma sintering was studied. At the surface of the samples, an iron-rich layer (magnetite) was formed due to the decomposition of BaM and segregation in the secondary phases. To prevent the formation of secondary phases different protection layers between the graphite mould and the sample were used. Their effect on the sample microstructure was studied by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The most suitable protection layer was a highly dense sintered disc of aluminium oxide. Using this dense protection layer, sintered discs of BaM with 82% of theoretical density and grains of 90 ± 50 nm were obtain…
Nanostructured Alumina from Freeze-Dried Precursors
2010
Nanocrystalline alumina has been obtained on the 100 g scale by thermal decomposition of precursors resulting from the freeze-drying of aqueous solutions of different aluminum-containing products, namely aluminum acetate and aluminum L-lactate. Samples prepared at different temperatures (from 873 to 1573 K in steps of 100 K) were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and surface area measurements. In the acetate case, the transformation sequence involves the formation of θ-Al 2 O 3 as an intermediate phase between γ-Al 2 O 3 and α-Al 2 O 3 , whereas this θ phase is not observed in the lactate case. TEM…
Bonding behavior of Bi-metal-deposits produced by hybrid cold spray additive manufacturing
2022
Abstract Cold spraying (CS) is one of the most recently used additive manufacturing (AM) processes that allow forming large 3D objects efficiently without severe thermal effects. However, due to some limitations of the CSAM process, it is difficult to achieve the desired geometry with high precision. As a potential solution to this issue, CSAM process coupled machining, that is, hybrid addition and subtraction manufacturing, is proposed to achieve desired accuracy and reliable shape. Therefore, it is necessary to assess the mechanical reliability of multilayer deposits deposited by CSAM + machining processes before that. In this work, different bi-deposits were obtained via hybrid CSAM. The…
Rheological Percolation Threshold in High-Viscosity Polymer/CNTs Nanocomposites
2017
AbstractPolystyrene (PS)/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNT) nanocomposites have been prepared through melt mixing processing aiming at obtaining a uniform and homogeneous dispersion of the used nanoparticles within the polymeric matrix. Optical and scanning electron microscopy has been employed to determine the dispersion and distribution of CNTs at different length scales. Furthermore, the linear viscoelastic behavior of formulated nanocomposites has been deeply investigated. As a result of CNTs added, the nanocomposites experience a transition from liquid-like to solid-like rheological behavior, and a disappearance of relaxation processes at low frequency can be noticed. By plotting G’ v…
