Zur Ökologie Abwasserbelasteter Altrheine

1977

The backwaters of the Upper Rhine can be divided into two types, namely the Sondernheim type and the Leimersheim type. The first one obtains its water mainly from small tributaries of the Rhine, the latter one by the Rhine itself. Both of them are polluted to nearly the same extent by organic matter. In the Sondernheim type biological decomposition starts intensively. It leads to mass-production of a few animal species in the upper, to less production of a large number of animal species in the lower part of its flow. In the Leimersheim type neither biological decomposition, nor mass-production nor a high species-diversity are to be observed. The possible causes of this difference are under …

Amino Acid Contents of Infant Formulas

1999

Abstract The amino acid supply in an infant's first month of life must be sufficient in quantity and quality to fulfil the needs of this period of life. Guidelines, recommendations and minimum and maximum values have been established regarding to amino acid composition of infant formulas. The aim of this study was to determine the amino acid profile of infant formulas of different types marketed in Spain in order to assess the compliance with the recommendations (ESPGAN) and to detect possible differences in the amino acid profiles depending on the protein source. Amino acids were determined by HPLC in ion-pair reversed phase after hydrolysis and derivatization with phenylisothiocyanate. Ne…

Stopped-Flow and DFT Studies of Proton Transfer and Isomerization of 5-Amino-3-imino-1,2,6,7-tetracyano-3H-pyrrolizine and Its Related Base 2-(5-Amin…

2001

International audience; A complete kinetic study of pH-dependent isomerization of 5-amino-3-imino-1,2,6,7-tetracyano-3H-pyrrolizine (HL) and 2-(5-amino-3,4-dicyano-2H-pyrrol-2-ylidene)-1,1,2-tricyanoethanide (L‘-) in the pH range from −0.5 to +13 in aqueous solution, which spans over 7 orders of magnitude for the pseudo-first-order rates (log k from −4.8 to +2.5), has revealed for the first time the existence of the corresponding conjugate species L- and HL‘. The study has allowed the determination of the acid dissociation constants of HL (pKa) and HL‘ (pKa‘), as well as all of the individual forward and reverse isomerization rates of the acidic (HL/HL‘) and basic (L-/L‘-) forms. Although L…

Effects of solvent-free microwave extraction on the chemical composition of essential oil of Calamintha nepeta (L.) Savi compared with the convention…

2008

The essential oil of Calamintha nepeta has been obtained by solvent-free microwave extraction (SFME) and by classical hydrodistillation (HD). A comparative qualitative-quantitative study on the composition of the oils was carried out. A total of 38 compounds, constituting 97.6% of the oil, were identified in the oil obtained by SFME, whereas 46 compounds, representing 95.4% of the oil, were characterized in the HD oil. SFME-distilled oil is richer in lightly oxygenated monoterpenes (LOM) than HD oil. It also has a higher amount of sesquiterpenes and a lower quantity of hydrocarbon monoterpenes. HD oil seems to be affected by chemical changes more than SFME oil.

Engraulis encrasicolus larvae from two different environmental spawning areas of the Central Mediterranean Sea: first data on amino acid profiles and…

2020

Early life stages of marine fish populations may be strongly affected by environmental factors. Changes in the physical environment or the availability of food resources could lead to stress-related physiological responses affecting larval fitness, growth and survival. In the present study, we determined, for the first time, amino acid composition (AAC), lipid, and carbohydrate content, as well as alkaline phosphatase and peroxidase activities in larvae from the European anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus. Fishes were caught in two different spawning areas of the Strait of Sicily, characterized by different environmental conditions, including a coastal upwelling with a lower temperature (Advent…

Polymeric alloys: Model materials for the understanding of the statistical thermodynamics of mixtures

1997

Polymeric materials find industrial applications that are comparable to those of metals and ceramics.1 In addition to the great variability via the synthesis of various monomers and the choice of the degree of polymerization (N), alloying of polymers finds increasing attention for combining favorable materials properties.1,2 But polymeric (binary) alloys (A,B) of flexible polymers with chain lengths NA, NB are also most interesting for testing theoretical concepts: changing NA, NB one controls the entropy of mixing, keeping intermolecular forces invariant. Variation of these control parameters thus allows stringent tests of the theories on miscibility, unmixing etc. Furthermore, the large s…

Lauroyl peroxide as thermal initiator of lauryl methacrylate monolithic columns for CEC

2008

The preparation of lauryl methacrylate (LMA)-based monolithic columns for CEC using lauroyl peroxide (LPO) as thermal initiator of polymerization has been investigated. The influence of initiator amount and composition of porogenic solvent on the physical and electrochromatographic properties of the resulting LMA-based monoliths was evaluated. A comparison with LMA-based columns thermally polymerized with AIBN was performed. At a given porogenic solvent composition, LMA stationary phases initiated with LPO showed higher permeabilities and better efficiency values than those prepared using AIBN as initiator. The optimum polymerization mixture found for LPO initiator provided a minimum plate …

How to Bridge the Gap Between Membrane Biology and Polymer Science

1986

Can polymer chemists contribute to the understanding or even mimicking of cell membrane functions and cell-cell interactions? Fascinated by the specificity and efficiency of, for example, the destruction of tumor cells by lymphocytes (1) and having in mind what biochemical analyses tell us about membrane composition, we may try to “synthesize” membrane and cell models. The commonly used model systems, such as planar lipid monolayers at the gas-water interface, bimolecular lipid membranes and spherical liposomes, are much less stable than natural membrane systems (Figure 1).

The chemistry of death--Adipocere degradation in modern graveyards.

2015

The formation of adipocere slows further decomposition and preserves corpses for decades or even centuries. This resistance to degradation is a serious problem, especially with regard to the reuse of graves after regular resting times. We present results from an exhumation series in modern graveyards where coffins from water-saturated earth graves contained adipocere embedded in black humic material after resting times of about 30 years. Based on the assumption that this humic material resulted from in situ degradation of adipocere, its presence contradicts the commonly held opinion that adipocere decomposition only occurs under aerobic conditions. To test our hypothesis, we collected black…
