Algae and their extracts in medical treatment
2018
Scientific efforts undertaken in recent decades have undoubtedly proven that algae are an inestimable and, what is more, important renewable source of hundreds of chemical compounds characterized by a wide spectrum of biological activity. Polysaccharides, phenolic compounds and their derivatives, pigments, proteins, lipids, and fatty acids are the substances that can be isolated from seaweeds, possessing antimicrobial, antiviral, antifungal, antilipidemic, antitumor, antidiabetic, anticoagulant, antioxidant, and antiallergic properties, which can be successfully utilized for human needs. The majority of attention has been focused on marine polysaccharides and their application in medicine a…

Anaerobic biodegradation of solvents from the packaging industry: study and enhancement
2017

Pheromone-binding proteins of scarab beetles.
1998
: We have characterized Pheromone binding proteins (PBPs) present in the antennae of several species of scarab beetles. In most cases there was only one class of PBP, which was expressed in both sexes. Both Anomala osakana and Popillia japonica possess a single PBP, highly homologous to each other. In each species the same PBP seems to recognize both enantiomers of japonilure, which have opposite biological functions, i.e., the sex Pheromone and the behavioral antagonist (stop signal). The purified PBP of A. osakana binds both enantiomers apparently with the same low affinity. Unexpectedly, these ligands were bound by moth PBPs, which utilize Pheromones with unrelated structures. These find…
Stability and extraction of bioactive sulfur compounds from Allium genus processed by traditional and innovative technologies
2017
Abstract Since ancient times, species from the Allium genus have been used in both culinary and medicinal applications. The health promoting properties, with well documented “evidence-based” studies, were attributed to the genus’ high content of bioactive organosulfur compounds. For these reasons, the organosulfur compounds have attracted interest in both food and pharmaceutical industries to be used as additives or supplements. Therefore, improvement in the extraction and stability during processing and storage of these molecules is crucial. The presented review documents the effects of traditional and innovative processing techniques on the extraction and stability of organosulfur compoun…
Guanosine 5′-diphosphate 3′-diphosphate (ppGpp) as a negative modulator of polynucleotide phosphorylase activity in a ‘rare’ actinomycete
2010
With the beginning of the idiophase the highly phosphorylated guanylic nucleotides guanosine 5'-diphosphate 3'-diphosphate (ppGpp) and guanosine 5'-triphosphate 3'-diphosphate (pppGpp), collectively referred to as (p)ppGpp, activate stress survival adaptation programmes and trigger secondary metabolism in actinomycetes. The major target of (p)ppGpp is the RNA polymerase, where it binds altering the enzyme activity. In this study analysis of the polynucleotide phosphorylase (PNPase)-encoding gene pnp mRNA, in Nonomuraea sp. ATCC 39727 wild-type, constitutively stringent and relaxed strains, led us to hypothesize that in actinomycetes (p)ppGpp may modulate gene expression at the level of RNA …
Coumarin derivatives from Pedilanthus tithymaloides as inhibitors of conidial germination in Magnaporthe oryzae
2012
In a screening for inhibitors of infection-related morphogenesis in the rice blast fungus Magnaporthe oryzae, a series of 10 coumarin derivatives were isolated from Pedilanthus tithymaloides (Euphorbiaceae). Seven of these compounds turned out to be known while three represent previously unreported natural products. Their structures were established on the basis of spectroscopic data and X-ray crystallography. Nine out of 10 coumarin derivatives were found to inhibit conidial germination in the phytopathogenic fungus at low concentrations.

Organometallic complexes with biological molecules: XIII. Organotin(IV)[meso-tetra (4-carboxyphenyl)porphinate]s and the cell cycle: a flow-cytometri…
1999
The cytotoxic derivatives diorganotin(IV) and triorganotin(IV) [meso-tetra(4-carboxyphenyl)porphinates, with stoichiometries [R2Sn]2TPPC and [R3Sn]4TPPC [R = Me, Bu, Ph; TPPC4−= meso-tetra(4-carboxyphenyl)porphinate4−], namely bis[dimethyltin(IV)], bis[dibutyltin(IV)], bis[diphenyltin(IV)], tetra[trimethyltin(IV)], tetra[tributyltin(IV)] and tetra[triphenyltin(IV)] [meso-tetra(4-carboxyphenyl)porphinate]s, have been used to investigate their effects on the cultured human kidney cell cycle in order to understand further the origin of cell-growth inhibition induced by the above-mentioned chemicals. The cell-cycle-dependent DNA content distribution of cultured cells exposed to these compounds…
