Capecitabine plus oxaliplatin (CapOx) versus capecitabine plus gemcitabine (CapGem) versus gemcitabine plus oxaliplatin (mGemOx): final results of a …
2007
Abstract Background To compare the efficacy and safety of three different chemotherapy doublets in the treatment of advanced pancreatic cancer (PC). Patients and methods At total of 190 patients were randomly assigned to receive capecitabine 1000 mg/m2 twice daily on days 1–14 plus oxaliplatin 130 mg/m2 on day 1 (CapOx), capecitabine 825 mg/m2 twice daily on days 1–14 plus gemcitabine 1000 mg/m2 on days 1 and 8 (CapGem) or gemcitabine 1000 mg/m2 on days 1 and 8 plus oxaliplatin 130 mg/m2 on day 8 (mGemOx). Treatment cycles were repeated every three weeks. The primary end point was progression-free survival (PFS) rate at 3 months; secondary end points included objective response rate, carboh…
Determination of haemoglobin adducts of acrylamide and glycidamide in smoking and non-smoking persons of the general population
2005
Acrylamide (AA) is a food-borne toxicant suspected to be carcinogenic to humans. It is formed in the heating process of starch-containing food. Currently, there is a great discussion about the possible human health risks connected with the dietary uptake of acrylamide. Haemoglobin adducts of acrylamide and its oxidative metabolite glycidamide are both markers of biochemical effect. However, because glycidamide has a higher carcinogenic potency than acrylamide itself, the glycidamide adduct might mirror the genotoxicity better than acrylamide adducts. In order to gain more information about the human metabolism of acrylamide, we investigated a small group of persons for the effective interna…
Kallikrein–kinin system and fibrinolysis in hereditary angioedema due to factor XII gene mutation Thr309Lys
2009
In a subgroup of hereditary angioedema (HAE) patients with normal C1-esterase inhibitor levels, HAE is caused by a Thr309Lys mutation in the coagulation factor XII (F12) gene. The aim of this study was to examine elements of the kallikrein-kinin system ('contact system') and the downstream-linked coagulation, complement and fibrinolytic systems in the plasma of six patients with HAE caused by the Thr309Lys mutation and healthy probands. Blood samples were taken from participants during the symptom-free interval between attacks. Samples were analyzed for activity and concentrations of components of the kallikrein-kinin system and linked enzyme systems. The mean FXII clotting activity was 90%…
Influence of hemostatic agents upon the outcome of periapical surgery: dressings with anesthetic and vasoconstrictor or aluminum chloride
2011
Objective: To evaluate the effects of different hemostatic agents upon the outcome of periapical surgery. Design: A retrospective study was made of patients subjected to periapical surgery between 2006-2009 with the ultrasound technique and using MTA as retrograde filler material. We included patients with a minimum follow-up of 12 months, divided into two groups according to the hemostatic agent used: A) dressings impregnated in anesthetic solution with adrenalin; or B) aluminum chloride paste (Expasyl™). Radiological controls were made after 6 and 12 months, and on the last visit. The global evolution scale proposed by von Arx and Kurt (1999) was used to establish the outcome of periapica…
Low Cross-Reactivity Between Cisplatin and Other Platinum Salts.
2019
Background Hypersensitivity reactions to platinum salts (PS) (cisplatin [CI], carboplatin [CA], and oxaliplatin [OX]) can be severe and their incidence is increasing due to their widespread use in cancer treatment. Objective To determine the rate of cross-reactivity between PS and whether CI can be administered without prior allergy testing in patients with a history of CA or OX hypersensitivity. Methods From September 2002 to April 2016, patients with suspected immediate PS hypersensitivity were tested and cross-reactivity between the 3 PS was evaluated. We then studied patients who were given CI without desensitization after immediate hypersensitivity to other PS. Results A total of 155 p…
The effect duration of candesartan cilexetil once daily, in comparison with enalapril once daily, in patients with mild to moderate hypertension.
2001
To determine the antihypertensive efficacy, effect duration and safety of the angiotensin II type 1 receptor blocker candesartan cilexetil and the angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor enalapril once daily in patients with mild to moderate hypertension.A multicenter, randomised, double-blind parallel group study was performed in Finland, France, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden. Three-hundred-and-ninety-five men and women in the age range 20-80 years with primary hypertension were randomised to an 8-week double-blind treatment period with either candesartan cilexetil 8-16 mg or enalapril 10-20 mg once daily, with forced dose titration after 4 weeks. Non-invasive ambulatory blood pressure…
No change in apolipoprotein AI metabolism when subcutaneous insulin infusion is replaced by intraperitoneal insulin infusion in type 1 diabetic patie…
2006
In type 1 diabetic patients, the replacement of subcutaneous insulin infusion by intraperitoneal insulin infusion restores the normal physiological gradient between the portal vein and the peripheral circulation, which is likely to modify HDL metabolism. This stable isotope kinetic study was designed to compare HDL apolipoprotein (apo) AI metabolism in seven type 1 diabetic patients first treated by continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion by an external pump and then 3 months after the beginning of intraperitoneal insulin infusion by an implantable pump. Glycaemic control was comparable under subcutaneous and intraperitoneal insulin infusion (HbA1c=7.34+/-0.94% versus 7.24+/-1.00%, NS). HD…
Opposite effects of suicidality and lithium on gray matter volumes in bipolar depression
2011
Background: Mood disorders are associated with the highest increase of attempted and completed suicide. Suicidality in major depressive disorder and in schizophrenia has been associated with reduced gray matter volumes in orbitofrontal cortex. Lithium reduces the suicide risk of patients with bipolar disorder (BD) to the same levels of the general population, and can increase GM volumes. We studied the effect of a positive history of attempted suicide and ongoing lithium treatment on regional GM volumes of patients affected by bipolar depression. Methods: With a correlational design, we studied 57 currently depressed inpatients with bipolar disorder: 19 with and 38 without a positive histor…
Lithium prevents grey matter atrophy in patients with bipolar disorder: an international multicenter study
2020
AbstractBackgroundLithium (Li) is the gold standard treatment for bipolar disorder (BD). However, its mechanisms of action remain unknown but include neurotrophic effects. We here investigated the influence of Li on cortical and local grey matter (GM) volumes in a large international sample of patients with BD and healthy controls (HC).MethodsWe analyzed high-resolution T1-weighted structural magnetic resonance imaging scans of 271 patients with BD type I (120 undergoing Li) and 316 HC. Cortical and local GM volumes were compared using voxel-wise approaches with voxel-based morphometry and SIENAX using FSL. We used multiple linear regression models to test the influence of Li on cortical an…
Colorectal Polyps: Detection with Dark-Lumen MR Colonography versus Conventional Colonoscopy
2005
To prospectively compare dark-lumen magnetic resonance (MR) colonography with conventional colonoscopy in the detection of colorectal polyps.Local ethical committee approval and informed consent were obtained. One hundred consecutive patients (56 men, 44 women; mean age +/- standard deviation, 67.7 years +/- 14.7; range, 25-82 years) who were referred for conventional colonoscopy from January 2003 to January 2004 underwent MR colonography and conventional colonoscopy after standard precolonoscopic bowel cleansing. Colonoscopy was performed immediately after MR colonography. For MR colonography, the colon was filled with approximately 2000 mL of tap water. Imaging was performed with a 1.5-T …
