Adopting magnetocaloric heat pumping and refrigeration for electrical vehicle

2017

International audience; Refrigeration process is based on conventional gas compression and expansion techniques. However, this technique has numerous disadvantages since it generates greenhouse gas and is partly responsible for global warming. This paper exposes analternative method: magnetocaloric refrigeration that presents the advantage to combine high-energy efficiency and respect of theenvironment. Magnetic heat pumping and cooling is compared to conventional method applied on vehicle air conditioning system.Simulation results are used to demonstrate the approach.

Textual data compression in computational biology: Algorithmic techniques

2012

Abstract In a recent review [R. Giancarlo, D. Scaturro, F. Utro, Textual data compression in computational biology: a synopsis, Bioinformatics 25 (2009) 1575–1586] the first systematic organization and presentation of the impact of textual data compression for the analysis of biological data has been given. Its main focus was on a systematic presentation of the key areas of bioinformatics and computational biology where compression has been used together with a technical presentation of how well-known notions from information theory have been adapted to successfully work on biological data. Rather surprisingly, the use of data compression is pervasive in computational biology. Starting from…

Preliminary design of EU DEMO helium-cooled breeding blanket primary heat transfer system

2018

Abstract The European DEMO conceptual design foresees four Breeding Blanket (BB) concepts that rely on different cooling and breeding technologies. As DEMO has been conceived to deliver net electricity to the grid, the choice of the blanket coolant plays a pivotal role in the reactor design having a strong influence on plant operation, safety and maintenance. Moreover, the machine pulsed operation makes the BB Primary Heat Transfer System (PHTS) the main hub of the DEMO Balance of Plant (BoP). Within this framework, a study has been carried out to design the Ex-Vessel PHTS of the Helium-Cooled Pebble Bed (HCPB) BB concept. The paper describes criteria and rationale followed with the aim to …

Critical analysis of conventional thermoeconomic approaches to the diagnosis of multiple faults in air conditioning units: Capabilities, drawbacks an…

2013

Abstract Faults diagnosis in air conditioning systems is a crucial activity, since malfunctions may induce heavy degradation of performance. Among the available techniques, thermoeconomic diagnosis has played a marginal role due to the difficulties encountered when applying the methodology to refrigeration plants. In this paper a critical analysis on capabilities and limits of thermoeconomic diagnosis is proposed. The reference plant is a 120 kWc air-cooled air conditioning system; a simulator is used to evaluate thermodynamic data under normal and faulty conditions, setting up “virtual experiments” to simulate each fault. Five malfunctions are imposed, either individually or simultaneously…

The use of results of spectral analysis of synchronous generator output voltage for technical diagnostics.

2006

The method of technical diagnostics of ship diesel engine-generator installations is offered. Spectral-power diagnostic parameters of the synchronous generator voltage and currents are used. The electric machine in this case is the multipurpose sensor of diagnostic parameters. On these parameters it is possible to judge quality of course of working processes in diesel engine cylinder, its technical condition. This method is applicable to piston compressor installations with the electric drive.

Experimental Investigation of Stall and Surge in a Multistage Compressor

2016

Flow instability conditions, in particular during surge and stall phenomena, have always influenced the operational reliability of turbo-compressors and have attracted significant interest resulting in extensive literature. Nowadays, this subject is still one of the most investigated because of its high relevance on centrifugal and axial compressor operating flow range, performance and efficiency. Many researchers approach this important issue by developing numerical models, whereas others approach it through experimental studies specifically carried out in order to better comprehend this phenomenon. The aim of this paper is to experimentally analyze the stable and unstable operating condit…

Analysis of Air Cycle and Efficiency Evaluation for a Blast Freezing Tunnel Plant

2013

Air refrigerating systems offer a suitable alternative to vapour compression systems. Air can be used as working fluid in gas compression cycles for refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump systems. This paper gives some results of theoretical investigation into improved air cycles for refrigeration systems and a comparison is made with their performances. The case-study relates to a dual purpose refrigerating plant. A blast freezing tunnel gives the coldest air stream and, in cascade, the air coming out from the tunnel is used in a channel network for feeding a lot of chilling cells. The case-study analysed indicates that there is a real possibility to build plants which will be equip…

Analysis of compressor architectures in MOS current-mode logic

2010

This paper is concerned with the design and the comparison of different compressor architectures for high performance multipliers in MOS current-mode logic (MCML). More specifically, three architectures have been designed for 3-2, 4-2 and 5-2 compressors and two architectures for 7-2 compressors. The various implementations for each type of compressor have been compared one another. This investigation indicates that the architectures based exclusively on three-level MCML gates are the most suitable for MCML implementation in terms of speed, power consumption and area. Design guidelines are provided to improve compressor performance. All the compressors were designed in a TSMC 180nm CMOS tec…

Brownfield management opportunities to reduce the back pressure effects on the gas wells

2017

Gas mature fields are associated with challenges to optimize the hydrocarbon flow from reservoir to the sales point in a cost effective manner due to declining well productivity. Laslau Mare field is a mature gas field in Transylvanian basin (Mures County) developed in 1970s and is producing∼99% methane with low water-gas ratio. As any brown field, the state of depleted reservoir will generate several constraints for gas flow from formation to surface facilities and further to delivery point. During the exploitation has been observed that the operation conditions are facing with unstable pressure in the system due to low demand. Therefore, the back pressure effect will affect the wells in t…

LPV Predictive Control of the Stall and Surge for Jet Engine 1

2001

Abstract Predictive control of constrained LPV systems is applied to the model of the stall and surge control for jet engine compressors. The objective of the used technique is to optimize nominal performance while guaranteeing robust stability and constraint satisfaction. This is achieved by exploiting invariant sets and a receding horizon optimization procedure which provides on-line a non-linear correction to a gain-scheduled linear feedback designed off-line. A comparison with a contractive gain-scheduling control technique is also shown.
