Maximal Operators with Respect to the Numerical Range

2018

Let $\mathfrak{n}$ be a nonempty, proper, convex subset of $\mathbb{C}$. The $\mathfrak{n}$-maximal operators are defined as the operators having numerical ranges in $\mathfrak{n}$ and are maximal with this property. Typical examples of these are the maximal symmetric (or accretive or dissipative) operators, the associated to some sesquilinear forms (for instance, to closed sectorial forms), and the generators of some strongly continuous semi-groups of bounded operators. In this paper the $\mathfrak{n}$-maximal operators are studied and some characterizations of these in terms of the resolvent set are given.

Limited Resistance Rigid Perfectly Plastic Hinges for Steel Frames

2017

The paper concerns the proposal of a new special device for steel frames that can be utilized as external constraint as well as internal one connecting the structure beam elements. The device is designed as a rigid perfectly plastic hinge characterized by suitably chosen stiffness and resistance. Its constituting material is steel. The elastic stiffness and the limit resistance, treated as independent of each other, are fixed with the aim of satisfying special features required to the structure. The proposed device is thought as a sandwich section with wing thickness appropriately variable. Its dimensions are designed so that it can exhibit the fixed independent stiffness and limit resistan…

Interactive Effects of Explicit Emergent Structure: A Major Challenge for Cognitive Computational Modeling

2015

International audience; David Marr's (1982) three-level analysis of computational cognition argues for three distinct levels of cognitive information processingnamely, the computational, representational, and implementational levels. But Marr's levels areand were meant to bedescriptive, rather than interactive and dynamic. For this reason, we suggest that, had Marr been writing today, he might well have gone even farther in his analysis, including the emergence of structurein particular, explicit structure at the conceptual levelfrom lower levels, and the effect of explicit emergent structures on the level (or levels) that gave rise to them. The message is that today's cognitive scientists …

A computational model for motor learning in insects

2013

The aim of this paper is to propose a computational model, inspired by Drosophila melanogaster, able to handle problems related to motor learning. The role of the Mushroom Bodies and the Central Complex in solving this problem is analyzed and plausible biologically inspired models are proposed. The designed computational models have been evaluated in simulation using a dynamic structure inspired by the fruit fly. The obtained results open the way to new neurobiological experiments focused to better understand the underlined mechanisms involved, to verify the feasibility of the hypotheses formulated and the significance of the obtained results.

Complex Detection in Protein-Protein Interaction Networks: A Compact Overview for Researchers and Practitioners

2012

The availability of large volumes of protein-protein interaction data has allowed the study of biological networks to unveil the complex structure and organization in the cell. It has been recognized by biologists that proteins interacting with each other often participate in the same biological processes, and that protein modules may be often associated with specific biological functions. Thus the detection of protein complexes is an important research problem in systems biology. In this review, recent graph-based approaches to clustering protein interaction networks are described and classified with respect to common peculiarities. The goal is that of providing a useful guide and referenc…

Implementation aspects of interactive multiobjective optimization for modeling environments: The case of GAMS-NIMBUS

2014

Abstract. Interactive multiobjective optimization methods have provided promising results in the literature but still their implementations are rare. Here we introduce a core structure of interactive methods to enable their convenient implementation. We also demonstrate how this core structure can be applied when implementing an interactive method using a modeling environment. Many modeling environments contain tools for single objective optimization but not for interactive multiobjective optimization. Furthermore, as a concrete example, we present GAMS-NIMBUS Tool which is an implementation of the classification-based NIMBUS method for the GAMS modeling environment. So far, interactive met…

Machine Learning: An Overview and Applications in Pharmacogenetics.

2021

This narrative review aims to provide an overview of the main Machine Learning (ML) techniques and their applications in pharmacogenetics (such as antidepressant, anti-cancer and warfarin drugs) over the past 10 years. ML deals with the study, the design and the development of algorithms that give computers capability to learn without being explicitly programmed. ML is a sub-field of artificial intelligence, and to date, it has demonstrated satisfactory performance on a wide range of tasks in biomedicine. According to the final goal, ML can be defined as Supervised (SML) or as Unsupervised (UML). SML techniques are applied when prediction is the focus of the research. On the other hand, UML…

A Differential Evolution Framework with Ensemble of Parameters and Strategies and Pool of Local Search Algorithms

2014

The file attached to this record is the author's final peer reviewed version. The publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link. The ensemble structure is a computational intelligence supervised strategy consisting of a pool of multiple operators that compete among each other for being selected, and an adaptation mechanism that tends to reward the most successful operators. In this paper we extend the idea of the ensemble to multiple local search logics. In a memetic fashion, the search structure of an ensemble framework cooperatively/competitively optimizes the problem jointly with a pool of diverse local search algorithms. In this way, the algorithm progressively adapts…
