Advanced Spectroscopic Detectors for Identification and Quantification

2013

The coupling of vibration spectroscopic detectors to liquid chromatography (LC) is an interesting analytical tool that allows combining high resolution from LC with molecular specific information accessible by infrared (IR) and Raman spectrometry. This chapter describes the basics of IR and Raman spectroscopy with a special emphasis on the advantages and pitfalls of these detection techniques in LC. Two fundamentally different coupling approaches, namely, off-line hyphenation involving the physical elimination of the mobile phase and on-line hyphenation through the use of flow cells, are discussed in detail, describing the most important interfaces and diverse practical applications. Structurally Uniform Oligomers

1985

Model compounds as well as prototype reactions are frequently used to understand more complex chemical systems. In the case of phenolic resins a large number of model compounds have been synthesized. They are regarded as either components of a complex mixture of novolaks or resoles or as representative segments of the phenolic crosslinked network. These model compounds were formerly the basis for the correlation of physical properties to molecular structure. Presently the progress of analytical separations and identification methods is formidable; highly sophisticated chemical instrumentation allows the analysis of highly complex mixtures. Nevertheless, well defined compounds with definite …

An immune system model in discrete time based on the analogy with the central nervous system

1988

Jerne's model for the immune system formulated in terms of a neural network recently proposed by Weisbuch and Atlan is generalized to interactions with continuous coupling coefficients. It is shown that even the extended model can be solved analytically without the aid of computer simulations and exhibits one additional attractor, which corresponds to a configuration with high concentrations of active killer cells eventually causing death of the organism.

Estimating feature discriminant power in decision tree classifiers

1995

Feature Selection is an important phase in pattern recognition system design. Even though there are well established algorithms that are generally applicable, the requirement of using certain type of criteria for some practical problems makes most of the resulting methods highly inefficient. In this work, a method is proposed to rank a given set of features in the particular case of Decision Tree classifiers, using the same information generated while constructing the tree. The preliminary results obtained with both synthetic and real data confirm that the performance is comparable to that of sequential methods with much less computation.

APPLICATION OF 3‐D FINITE DIFFERENCE METHOD FOR INDUCTANCE CALCULATION OF AIR‐CORE COILS SYSTEM

1994

The paper deals with the inductance calculation of air‐core coils system by means of 3‐D analysis of magnetic field of the coils with rectangular cross‐section. The possibility of mutual and self‐inductance calculation is presented. For magnetic field calculation, the Finite Difference Method with application of fast calculating procedures was applied. The method of calculation has been verified by experiments. The obtained difference between calculating and measurement results is equal to a few percent. The computer program is usefull especially for asymmetrical configuration of the coils.

Toward a formalization of a two traders market with information exchange

2014

This paper shows that Hamiltonians and operators can also be put to good use even in contexts which are not purely physics based. Consider the world of finance. The work presented here {models a two traders system with information exchange with the help of four fundamental operators: cash and share operators; a portfolio operator and an operator reflecting the loss of information. An information Hamiltonian is considered and an additional Hamiltonian is presented which reflects the dynamics of selling/buying shares between traders. An important result of the paper is that when the information Hamiltonian is zero, portfolio operators commute with the Hamiltonian and this suggests that the dy…

Abstract Interest in studying information systems discontinuance has been increasing lately, yet there is no consensus on what it means. To improve the situation, we conduct a comprehensive review of current literature on IS discontinuance and identify 55 studies published during 1991–2017 that specifically focus on the topic. Our conceptual analysis disentangles the process, content, and context of the phenomenon, revealing that over the course of a typical IS lifecycle, IS discontinuance may materialize at least in five distinct forms: rejection, regressive discontinuance, quitting, temporary discontinuance, and replacement. After elaborating their distinctions, we discuss their theoretic…

Errors and Complications in SQL Query Formulation

2018

SQL is taught in almost all university level database courses, yet SQL has received relatively little attention in educational research. In this study, we present a database management system independent categorization of SQL query errors that students make in an introductory database course. We base the categorization on previous literature, present a class of logical errors that has not been studied in detail, and review and complement these findings by analyzing over 33,000 SQL queries submitted by students. Our analysis verifies error findings presented in previous literature and reveals new types of errors, namely logical errors recurring in similar manners among different students. We…
