Semi-automatic Derivation of Specific-Domain Ontologies for the Semantic Web

This paper describes an approach for helping in the semi-automatic construction of specific-domain ontology components contained in a digital archive. This proposal for extracting knowledge from digital sources allows users to have a view of this knowledge and visualize specific-domain ontology components that with further processing can be shared with software agents by embedding it into digital archives themselves in the context of the Semantic Web. In particular, we deal with the issue of not constructing the ontology from scratch, our approach helps us to speed up the ontology creation process.

Developing MLS Location-Based Service Pilot System

Development of mobile networks and terminals provides basis for advanced mobile services and applications. One of the new features is support for locating the mobile user by her/his terminal. The Location-Based Services (LBS), utilising this feature, are expected to form an important class of the new services. At the Information Technology Research Institute, University of Jyvaskyla, LBSs have been studied in MultiMeetMobile research project. The project developed an LBS pilot system, called MLS. This paper presents the experiences collected during the development of the LBS pilot and describes the MLS system.

Abstract The paper describes the use of business process models for effective managing of information system execution processes and transparent representation of execution statuses. Contrary to traditional approaches where business process models are used only in the initial stages of information system development, the proposed approach suggests direct utilization of business process models during the use of information systems. Information system usability can be improved by using new means of representation, and business process models can serve as an efficient way to visualize execution processes in information systems.

This paper presents a Web-based data integration methodology and tool framework, called X-TIME, for the development of business-to-business (B2B) design environments and applications. X-TIME provides a data model translator toolkit based on an extensible metamodel and XML. Can planning be a research paradigm in architectural design?

Abstract In the present paper we discuss the possible use of ‘planning’ ° to support architectural design. Architectural design is conceived as a process incorporating non-trivial subprocesses consisting of evolutionary sequences of drawings. The ‘planner’ can be viewed as a tool capable of managing the automatic development of formal descriptions of architectural objects, according to goals and constraints which are interactively assigned or removed by the designer. The main features of a ‘planner’ dedicated to architectural design are then put forward. The system has been implemented at the University of Ancona, Italy.

This paper deals with the problem of finding a suitable framework for designing computer simulations that could help us determine the minimal requirements (both material and organizational) for the origin of the first full-fledged autonomous systems. The design of a particular model that takes into account some fundamental thermodynamic requirements is offered and discussed. Behind this work, there is a belief that Artificial Life models can inform biology on several fundamental questions (such as the origin and definition of life) but only provided that they assume more realistic and grounded premises to lead us to more conclusive results.
