Vibration control of base-isolated structures using mixed H2/H∞ output-feedback control

A mixed H2/ H∞ output-feedback control design methodology for vibration reduction of base-isolated building structures modelled in the form of second-order linear systems is presented. Sufficient conditions for the design of a desired control are given in terms of linear matrix inequalities. A controller that guarantees asymptotic stability and a mixed H2/ H∞ performance for the closed-loop system of the structure is developed, based on a Lyapunov function. The performance of the controller is evaluated by means of simulations in MATLAB/Simulink.

Local capacity H<inf>∞</inf> control for production networks of autonomous work systems with time-varying delays

This paper considers the problem of local capacity H ∞ control for a class of production networks of autonomous work systems with time-varying delays in the capacity changes. The system under consideration is modelled in a discrete-time singular form. Attention is focused on the design of a controller gain for the local capacity adjustments which maintains the work in progress (WIP) in each work system in the vicinity of planned levels and guarantees the asymptotic stability of the system and reduces the effect of the disturbance input on the controlled output to a prescribed level. Stabilization of a Class of Stochastic Nonlinear Systems

This paper addresses two control schemes for stochastic nonlinear systems. Firstly, an adaptive controller is designed for a class of motion equations. Then, a robust finite-time control scheme is proposed to stabilize a class of nonlinear stochastic systems. The stability of the closed-loop systems is established based on stochastic Lyapunov stability theorems. Links between these two methods are given. The efficiency of the control schemes is evaluated using numerical simulations.

Simulation of PLL with impulse signals in MATLAB: Limitations, hidden oscillations, and pull-in range

The limitations of PLL simulation are demonstrated on an example of phase-locked loop with triangular phase detector characteristic. It is shown that simulation in MatLab may not reveal periodic oscillations (e.g. such as hidden oscillations) and thus may lead to unreliable conclusions on the width of pull-in range.

Tool support for MOLA

AbstractThe paper describes the MOLA Tool, which supports the model transformation language MOLA. MOLA Tool consists of two parts: MOLA definition environment and MOLA execution environment. MOLA definition environment is based on the GMF (Generic Modeling Framework) and contains graphical editors for metamodels and MOLA diagrams, as well as the MOLA compiler. The main component of MOLA execution environment is a MOLA virtual machine, which performs model transformations, using an SQL database as a repository. The execution environment may be used as a plug-in for Eclipse based modeling tools (e.g., IBM Rational RSA). The current status of the tool is truly academic.

Down and out in Italian towns: Measuring the impact of economic downturns on crime

The paper investigates the effect of local economic conditions on crime. The study focuses on Italy’s local labor markets and analyzes the response of crime to the severe slump of 2007-2011. It shows that the downturn led to a significant increase in economic-related offenses that do not require particular criminal skills or tools (namely, thefts).

l-glutamine: a major substrate for tumor cells in vivo?

From 65 human breast cancer xenografts investigated, a net glutamine uptake was found in 13 tumors (mean +/- SE: 15.7 +/- 4.5 nmol/g per min) whereas a net release (22.5 +/- 3.3 nmol/g per min) was observed in 40 tumors. In 12 tumors neither a significant net uptake nor a net release was obvious. There is experimental evidence that glutamine is taken up by cancer cells only at arterial concentrations greater than 0.5 mM. Another parameter determining glutamine utilization by tumor cells may be the tissue oxygenation. Absolok® versus Hem-o-Lok® clips for renorrhaphy during partial nephrectomy for parenchymal renal tumors

Background: The purpose of this clinical study was to evaluate the complications associated with the different attachments used in implant-supported overdentures, including prosthetic problems and implant failures. A comparison of ball, bar and Locator (Zest Anchors, Inc, homepage, Escondido, CA, USA) attachments, in completely edentulous patients with two, three or four implants, was conducted.
