PDB: A pictorial database oriented to data analysis
1993
The paper describes a new pictorial database oriented to image analysis, implemented inside the MIDAS data analysis system. Pictorial databases need expressive data structures in order to represent a wide class of information from the numerical to the visual. The model of the database is relational; however, a full normalization is not achievable, owing to the complexity of the visual information. The paper reports the general design and notes on the software implementation. Preliminary experiments show the performance of the pictorial database. Copyright © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd
Query-Driven Method for Improvement of Data Warehouse Conceptual Model
2013
We propose a query-driven method that elicits the information requirements from existing queries on data sources and their usage statistics. Our method presumes that the queries against the source database reflect the analysis needs of users. We use this method to recommend changes to the existing data warehouse schemata. In our method, we take advantage of the schema versioning approach to reflect all changes that occur in the analysed process, and we analyse the activity of users in the source system, rather than changes in physical data structure, to infer the necessary improvements to the data warehouse schema.
Reusability and modularity in transactional workflows
1997
Abstract Workflow management techniques have become an intensive area of research in information systems. In large scale workflow systems modularity and reusability of existing task structures with context dependent (parameterized) task execution are essential components of a successful application. In this paper we study the issues related to management of modular transactional workflows, i.e., workflows that reuse component tasks and thus avoid redundancy in design. The notion of parameterized transactional properties of workflow tasks is introduced and analyzed, and the underlying architectural issues are discussed.
OSA and cancer in Europe: the European Sleep Apnea Database (ESADA) experience
2017
Background: Experimental and clinical studies suggest a relationship between Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and cancer development or progression Objectives: To explore the association between the severity of OSA and prevalence of cancer among patients reported to the European Sleep Apnea Database (ESADA) after control of several known risk factors for cancer development Methods: A prospective multicentre cohort study of adult patients with OSA (Apnea/Hypopnea Index, AHI≥5). OSA severity was classified according to AHI, Oxygen Desaturation Index (ODI) and % night-time spent with oxygen saturation Results: Of 19,556 participants, 357 (1.8%, 59.4% male) had been diagnosed with malignancy. Pati…
Cost-Oriented Recommendation Model for E-Commerce
2012
Contemporary Web stores offer a wide range of products to e-customers. However, online sales are strongly dominated by a limited number of bestsellers whereas other, less popular or niche products are stored in inventory for a long time. Thus, they contribute to the problem of frozen capital and high inventory costs. To cope with this problem, we propose using information on product cost in a recommender system for a Web store. We discuss the proposed recommendation model, in which two criteria have been included: a predicted degree of meeting customer’s needs by a product and the product cost.
Unified computing facility design based on open source software
2012
The article describes e-infrastructure development in Latvia and migration to national Cloud as regional partner facility (RPF) in European Union (EU). In Latvia many public and private Computing Clouds is in operation and problem is how to integrate these resources as one RPF and how to design one unified computing facility that is used for many different applications. The authors offer their solution at Cloud software as a Service and Hardware as a Service level which is based on usage of open source packaged bundles.
Retrieving Open Source Software Licenses
2006
Open Source Software maintenance and reuse require identifying and comprehending the applied software licenses. This paper first characterizes software maintenance, and open source software (OSS) reuse which are particularly relevant in this context. The information needs of maintainers and reusers can be supported by reverse engineering tools at different information retrieval levels. The paper presents an automated license retrieval approach called ASLA. User needs, system architecture, tool features, and tool evaluation are presented. The implemented tool features support identifying source file dependencies and licenses in source files, and adding new license templates for identifying l…
Mild OSA and arterial hypertension in the European Sleep Apnoea Database cohort study
2019
Background: Mild obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is highly prevalent; however its association with important clinical outcomes like arterial hypertension remains unknown. Aims: To investigate the association between mild OSA and hypertension in the European Sleep Apnoea Database (ESADA) cohort after adjusting for relevant confounding factors. Methods: A multicentric sample of 7995 adults from the ESADA cohort with simple snoring or mild OSA at PG or PSG was studied. We compared the predictive value of mild OSA (AHI 5- Results: Arterial hypertension prevalence was 37% in mild OSA (n=1566) compared to 22% in non-apnoeic snorers (n=793, p Conclusion: Our results suppport the hypothesis that mi…
Smoking ban in public places and myocardial infarction hospitalizations in high cardiovascular risk European country – insights from the Polish natio…
2019
Introduction Previous studies demonstrated a possible positive effect of a smoking ban in public places on cardiovascular outcomes. However, little is known about the influence of such regulations in Poland, a country with a high cardiovascular risk. Objectives We aimed to evaluate the association of hospitalization rates for acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in Poland before and after the introduction of the smoking ban in public places in November 2010. Patients and methods The Nationwide Acute Myocardial Infarction Database (AMI‑PL) was searched for the cases of AMI that occurred between 2009 and 2014. The analysis considered sex, age (20-64 years vs 65 years or older), and the place of …
Change in weight and central obesity by positive airway pressure treatment in obstructive sleep apnea patients: Longitudinal data from the European S…
2017
Introduction: The effect of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment on body weight and central obesity in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients is still unclear. Objectives: We aimed to study body composition change during CPAP treatment in the European Sleep Apnea Database (ESADA). Methods: OSA patients with a CPAP treatment follow-up time of more than 30 days in the ESADA registry were selected (n=2015). Body mass index (BMI), body weight, waist-, hip- and neck-circumferences were assessed at baseline and follow-up (median [interquartile range], 242 [380] days). Predictors for body composition changes with CPAP were analyzed adjusting for confounders. Results: Overall, there…
