Unveiling Bacterial Interactions through Multidimensional Scaling and Dynamics Modeling

AbstractWe propose a new strategy to identify and visualize bacterial consortia by conducting replicated culturing of environmental samples coupled with high-throughput sequencing and multidimensional scaling analysis, followed by identification of bacteria-bacteria correlations and interactions. We conducted a proof of concept assay with pine-tree resin-based media in ten replicates, which allowed detecting and visualizing dynamical bacterial associations in the form of statistically significant and yet biologically relevant bacterial consortia.
Consistency Analysis of Genome-Scale Models of Bacterial Metabolism: A Metamodel Approach.

Genome-scale metabolic models usually contain inconsistencies that manifest as blocked reactions and gap metabolites. With the purpose to detect recurrent inconsistencies in metabolic models, a large-scale analysis was performed using a previously published dataset of 130 genome-scale models. The results showed that a large number of reactions (~22%) are blocked in all the models where they are present. To unravel the nature of such inconsistencies a metamodel was construed by joining the 130 models in a single network. Data collected in criminal investigations may suffer from issues like: (i) incompleteness, due to the covert nature of criminal organizations; (ii) incorrectness, caused by either unintentional data collection errors or intentional deception by criminals; (iii) inconsistency, when the same information is collected into law enforcement databases multiple times, or in different formats. The link between colour and emotion and its possible similarity across cultures are questions that have not been fully resolved. Online, 711 participants from China, Germany, Greece and the UK associated 12 colour terms with 20 discrete emotion terms in their native languages. We present a method to discover discriminative brain metabolism patterns in [18F] fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (PET) scans, facilitating the clinical diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. Predictability and prediction of lowest observed adverse effect levels in a structurally heterogeneous set of chemicals

A database of chronic lowest observed adverse effect levels (LOAELs) for 234 compounds, previously compiled from different sources (Toxicology Letters79, 131-143 (1995)), was modelled using graph theoretical descriptors. This study reveals that data are not homogeneous. Only those data originating from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports could be well modelled by multilinear regression (MLR) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA). In contrast, data available from the specific procedures of the National Toxicology Program (NTP) database introduced noise and did not render good models either alone, or in combination with the EPA data.
Metadata-Oriented Language Model in Translingual Retrieval of Digital Data

Translingual retrieval relies on processing a source language to retrieve digital document content in a target language. From the perspective of successful browsing digital catalogues, probability of retrieving the full text document in a language other than the query language is close to zero owning to the fact that it is not only the library collection, but especially a problem of matching the index terms with the query keywords which are assumed to be their translation equivalents. In this book we have critically explored the emerging practices of immersive journalism. In the news business, experimenting with new forms of storytelling has become the new normal. After spending a decade to get familiar with simple virtual reality tools, however, the future of immersive journalism is still considered uncertain. Immersive storytelling appears to become more concentrated on special events and locations. Journalistic virtual reality skills are increasingly crafted away from the newsrooms by small and specialized subcontractors. A Neural Network-Based Algorithm for 3D Multispectral Scanning Applied to Multimedia

We describe a new stereoscopic system based on a multispectral camera and an LCD-Projector. The novel concept we want to show consists in the use of multispectral information for 3D-scenes reconstruction. Each 3D point is linked to a curve representing the spectral reflectance. This latter is a physical representation of the matter and presents the advantage over color information, which is perceptual, that it is independent from both illuminant and observer.
