The European Sleep Apnoea Database (ESADA) ERS Clinical Research Collaboration: past, present and future

2018

There are some critical issues that determine the sustainability of the ESADA project in the long term. We need to develop strategies to maintain high data quality and enable new research activities related to the database. Funding may be provided by public and academic institutions or by collaborations with industry. We plan to submit EU research or public health projects, and cooperation with other cohorts will help to reach the critical mass necessary to cover the entire European area. Again, the CRC is a very good opportunity to pursue this goal, not only for the visibility provided by the endorsement of a leading society like the ERS, but also for the practical support in submission of…

Virtual Multidisciplinary Tumor Boards: A Narrative Review Focused on Lung Cancer

2021

To date, the virtual multidisciplinary tumor boards (vMTBs) are increasingly used to achieve high-quality treatment recommendations across health-care regions, which expands and develops the local MTB team to a regional or national expert network. This review describes the process of lung cancer-specific MTBs and the transition process from face-to-face tumor boards to virtual ones. The review also focuses on the project organization's description, advantages, and disadvantages. Semi-structured interviews identified five major themes for MTBs: current practice, attitudes, enablers, barriers, and benefits for the MTB. MTB teams exhibited positive responses to modeled data feedback. Virtualiz…

Introducing a novel mesh following technique for approximation-free robotic tool path trajectories

2017

Abstract Modern tools for designing and manufacturing of large components with complex geometries allow more flexible production with reduced cycle times. This is achieved through a combination of traditional subtractive approaches and new additive manufacturing processes. The problem of generating optimum tool-paths to perform specific actions (e.g. part manufacturing or inspection) on curved surface samples, through numerical control machinery or robotic manipulators, will be increasingly encountered. Part variability often precludes using original design CAD data directly for toolpath generation (especially for composite materials), instead surface mapping software is often used to gener…

Hierarchical Syntactic Models for Human Activity Recognition through Mobility Traces

2019

AbstractRecognizing users’ daily life activities without disrupting their lifestyle is a key functionality to enable a broad variety of advanced services for a Smart City, from energy-efficient management of urban spaces to mobility optimization. In this paper, we propose a novel method for human activity recognition from a collection of outdoor mobility traces acquired through wearable devices. Our method exploits the regularities naturally present in human mobility patterns to construct syntactic models in the form of finite state automata, thanks to an approach known asgrammatical inference. We also introduce a measure ofsimilaritythat accounts for the intrinsic hierarchical nature of su…

Instruction-based clinical eye-tracking study on the visual interpretation of divergence : how do students look at vector field plots?

2018

Relating mathematical concepts to graphical representations is a challenging task for students. In this paper, we introduce two visual strategies to qualitatively interpret the divergence of graphical vector field representations. One strategy is based on the graphical interpretation of partial derivatives, while the other is based on the flux concept. We test the effectiveness of both strategies in an instruction-based eye-tracking study with N = 41 physics majors. We found that students’ performance improved when both strategies were introduced (74% correct) instead of only one strategy (64% correct), and students performed best when they were free to choose between the two strategies (88…

Strategies for annotation and curation of translational databases: the eTUMOUR project

2012

Altres ajuts: LSHC/CT2004-503094 The eTUMOUR (eT) multi-centre project gathered in vivo and ex vivo magnetic resonance (MR) data, as well as transcriptomic and clinical information from brain tumour patients, with the purpose of improving the diagnostic and prognostic evaluation of future patients. In order to carry this out, among other work, a database-the eTDB-was developed. In addition to complex permission rules and software and management quality control (QC), it was necessary to develop anonymization, processing and data visualization tools for the data uploaded. It was also necessary to develop sophisticated curation strategies that involved on one hand, dedicated fields for QC-gene…

Perinatal Database in Germany

1995

By collecting standardized data from up to 600,000 deliveries per year in Germany a nation-wide database has been established in recent years enabling not only regional and overregional quality control, but also the scientific analysis of rare maternal and fetal complication. During the observation period of 10 years the understanding of perinatal risk factors has considerably improved and the perinatal mortality has declined from 9.4 to 6.4 (per 1,000 deliveries). From the huge amount of calculations typical results are presented.

The EDNAP mitochondrial DNA population database (EMPOP) collaborative exercises: organisation, results and perspectives.

2003

This paper presents an overview of the organisation and the results of the collaborative exercises (CE) of the European DNA Profiling (EDNAP) Group's mitochondrial DNA population database project (EMPOP). The aim of the collaborative exercises was to determine whether uniformity of mtDNA sequencing results could be achieved among different laboratories. These were asked to sequence either the complete mtDNA control region or the two hypervariable regions HVI (16024-16365) and HVII (73-340) from DNA extracts, buccal swabs or bloodstains, proceeding in accordance with the protocol and strategies used in each individual laboratory. The results of the collaborative exercises were employed to id…

Development of an Italian RM Y-STR haplotype database: Results of the 2013 GEFI collaborative exercise.

2015

Recently introduced rapidly mutating Y-chromosomal short tandem repeat (RM Y-STR) loci, displaying a multiple-fold higher mutation rate relative to any other Y-STRs, including those conventionally used in forensic casework, have been demonstrated to improve the resolution of male lineage differentiation and to allow male relative separation usually impossible with standard Y-STRs. However, large and geographically-detailed frequency haplotype databases are required to estimate the statistical weight of RM Y-STR haplotype matches if observed in forensic casework. With this in mind, the Italian Working Group (GEFI) of the International Society for Forensic Genetics launched a collaborative ex…
