XPL the Extensible Presentation Language

2009

The last decade has witnessed a growing interest in the development of web interfaces enabling both multiple ways to access contents and, at the same time, fruition by multiple modalities of interaction (point-and-click, contents reading, voice commands, gestures, etc.). In this paper we describe a framework aimed at streamlining the design process of multi-channel, multimodal interfaces enabling full reuse of software components. This framework is called the eXtensible Presentation architecture and Language (XPL), a presentation language based on design pattern paradigm that keeps separated the presentation layer from the underlying programming logic. The language supplies a methodology to…

Mobile Communication: Media Effects

2017

This entry introduces the reader to various media effects of mobile communication devices. The special focus is on mobile phones. The entry begins with a presentation of media effects on communication practices, on users, as well as on interlocutors and bystanders. It continues by analyzing the reverse effects of users on the redesign of mobile media. Lastly, the issues of how mobile communication is connected to social and geographical surroundings and how the use of mobile communication devices is related to the social structures of society are addressed. The entry concludes with a discussion of the media effects of mobile communication in the future. Keywords: digital media; mobile commu…

Null Effect of Set Size in Lexical Decision

1995

The effect of set size indicates that recall of a word is greater when its cue is associated with fewer words. This study was designed to replicate this result with lexical decisions of 18 students. In spite of obtaining the set-size effect with cue recall, it was not observed with lexical decision.

The Development of Spatial Location in Finnish

1991

Abstract The purpose of this research was to study the shift from mono- to bi-referential spatial location in the language of Finnish children. Monoreferential location is based on the intrinsic properties of a referent object and the proximity relationship, and bireferential location requires coordinated spatial relationships involving referent objects and a projective relationship. Locative expressions which are monoreferential include: in/on/under and intrinsic front/back, and those which are bireferential include deictic front/back and between. A pictorial representation of locative relationships with a sentence-picture matching task was used to present the mono- vs bi-referential contr…

V11. Functional hierarchy within an overall network for visual motion processing and ocular-motor control at rest

2015

Introduction Visual motion processing on one hand and ocular motor functions on the other are rarely studied together in vivo in humans. The interrelation of these functional networks is rather unclear, even though their functional dependence seems obvious. In several fMRI studies the essential nodes of both networks could be localized using voluntary optokinetic ('look') nystagmus (OKN) in the horizontal plane incorporating visual motion tracking (Dieterich et al., 2009). Here, functional connectivity (FC) between these nodes representing both networks was studies using resting-state FC. Methods Resting-state fMRI data of 200 healthy adults (age 44.1±17.9; 79 male) were included in the cro…

EP 34. Functional hierarchy within the neural network for optokinetic ‘look’ nystagmus

2016

Item does not contain fulltext Key nodes of neural networks for ocular motor control and visual motion processing have been localized using saccades, smooth pursuit, and optokinetic nystagmus (OKN). Within the context of an independent fMRI study using OKN, 9 bilateral network nodes were localized comprising cortical eye fields in frontal (FEF), supplementary motor (SEF), cingulate (CEF) and parietal cortex (PEF), visual motion centers MT+ and V6, the superior colliculus (SC), the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) and the globus pallidus (GP). Here, we examined the network's functional hierarchy as present in the structural co-variation (SCoV) and resting-state (RS) fMRI, and the effect of R…

Practice and assessment of oral skills in developing online preparatory materials through the InGenio authoring shell

2012

The practice of oral skills is a basic requirement of learning or teaching a new language, as one of the main goals in the field of language learning is developing oral communicative competence, especially needed in contexts where the students¿ L2 is the vehicular language and therefore the main means of interaction. The InGenio online authoring tool allows designers of new materials, as well as language teachers and students, to rethink and imagine new ways of dealing with practice and assessment of listening and speaking skills thanks to the flexibility of its templates, resources and tools. This article explores the ways in which the InGenio utilities, solutions and learning materials ar…

Compaction of Open-Graded HMAs Evaluated by a Fuzzy Clustering Technique

2015

The aim of this paper is the proposal of an expeditious procedure to be used during the execution of an asphalt layer for improving the compaction task. This procedure, based on a fuzzy clustering technique, starts from the knowledge of some information recorded by ordinary measuring instruments and provides an aid to the decision-maker on the number of roller passes needed to achieve a specific density at a certain temperature. This result can be deduced with great rapidity during the paving operations on site without waiting for the time spent in the core extraction and in the subsequent laboratory analysis. In this way it is possible to identify more precisely which aspects of the execut…

Metamodelling architectures for complex data integration in systems biology

2010

Systems biology aims at deciphering the functioning of biological systems on the basis of the knowledge of their molecular components and the relations between such components. To address the issues involved, high-throughput technologies are used. Taking advantage of the standards that are being currently developed to achieve consensual representations of technological domains, we present a metamodelling architecture based on these standards. The proposed architecture organises standard-specific metamodels and models into a single hierarchy. Each metamodel describes a consensus that is shared by several models of applications. A metamodel construct for description of faceted element is prop…

Incremental Generalized Discriminative Common Vectors for Image Classification.

2015

Subspace-based methods have become popular due to their ability to appropriately represent complex data in such a way that both dimensionality is reduced and discriminativeness is enhanced. Several recent works have concentrated on the discriminative common vector (DCV) method and other closely related algorithms also based on the concept of null space. In this paper, we present a generalized incremental formulation of the DCV methods, which allows the update of a given model by considering the addition of new examples even from unseen classes. Having efficient incremental formulations of well-behaved batch algorithms allows us to conveniently adapt previously trained classifiers without th…
