Data-Centric and Multimedia Components

2011

The content of XML documents is often primarily plain text, interspersed with various headers and perhaps some lists and tables. However, there are many applications for which the content of documents is not primarily narrative in nature, but instead includes (portions of) data records that are subject to storage and computational manipulation. The latter documents are sometimes referred to as data-centric or record-like, and they rely extensively on precise descriptions of the forms of data that can appear. In this chapter we first introduce the data type definition capabilities in XML Schema. We then consider the types of data very common in traditional databases: numeric data, dates, and…

On the Online Classification of Data Streams Using Weak Estimators

2016

In this paper, we propose a novel online classifier for complex data streams which are generated from non-stationary stochastic properties. Instead of using a single training model and counters to keep important data statistics, the introduced online classifier scheme provides a real-time self-adjusting learning model. The learning model utilizes the multiplication-based update algorithm of the Stochastic Learning Weak Estimator (SLWE) at each time instant as a new labeled instance arrives. In this way, the data statistics are updated every time a new element is inserted, without requiring that we have to rebuild its model when changes occur in the data distributions. Finally, and most impo…

Day-ahead forecasting for photovoltaic power using artificial neural networks ensembles

2016

Solar photovoltaic plants power output forecasting using machine learning techniques can be of a great advantage to energy producers when they are implemented with day-ahead energy market data. In this work a model was developed using a supervised learning algorithm of multilayer perceptron feedforward artificial neural network to predict the next twenty-four hours (day-ahead) power of a solar facility using fetched weather forecast of the following day. Each set of tested network configuration was trained by the historical power output of the plant as a target. For each configuration, one hundred networks ensembles was averaged to give the ability to generalize a better forecast. The train…

Comment on: A critical analysis of the internal logic in the Life-Space Assessment (LSA) composite score and suggested solutions

2016

Background:An individual’s ability to live independently is commonly measured in health research interested in identifying risk factors associated with disablement processes. In order to inform clinical practice, population research has attempted to identify the contraction of “lived-space” by using various survey instruments.Problem:Studies assessing habitual movements over the environment with the Life-Space Assessment (LSA) survey instrument should carefully consider how the LSA Composite Score (LSA-CS) is computed. Until now, no publication has carefully delineated the assumptions guiding the internal logic used in the computation of the LSA-CS.Core argument:Because the internal logic o…

Reverse inheritance in statically typed object-oriented programming languages

2010

Reverse inheritance is a new class reuse mechanism, an experimental implementation of which we have built for Eiffel. It enables a more natural design approach, factorization of common features (members), insertion of classes into an existing hierarchy etc. Due to its reuse potential in Eiffel we consider exploring its capabilities in other industrial-strength programming languages like C++, Java and C#.

Search and Comprehension Processes in Learning from Text

2008

We analyzed the relationships between comprehension skill and search strategies in instructional text. In two experiments, college-level readers were asked to search a computer-presented science text in order to answer different types of questions. High level questions required the integration of information across paragraphs, whereas low level questions requested the localization of information within a single paragraph. High level questions were re-read more often and they resulted in broader text search patterns. Furthermore, students who were diagnosed as good comprehenders located relevant sections of the text faster and spent more time on those sections. Poor comprehenders, on the oth…

A grid representation for distributed virtual environments

2004

Fast Internet connections and the widespread use of high performance graphic cards are making Distributed Virtual Environments (DVE) very common nowadays. The architecture and behavior of these systems are very similar to new grid computing applications where concepts such as sharing and high scalability are extremely exploited. However, there are several key issues in these systems that should still be improved in order to design a scalable and cost-effective DVE system. One of these key issues is the partitioning problem. This problem consists of efficiently assigning clients (3-D avatars) to the arbiters (servers) in the system. As an alternative to the ad-hoc heuristic proposed in the l…

Local operators to detect regions of interest

1997

The performance of a visual system is strongly influenced by the information processing that is done in the early vision phase. The need exists to limit the computation on areas of interest to reduce the total amount of data and their redundancy. This paper describes a new method to drive the attention during the analysis of complex scenes. Two new local operators, based on the computation of local moments and symmetries, are combined to drive the selection. Experimental results on real data are also reported. © 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

The windowed scalogram difference: A novel wavelet tool for comparing time series

2017

Abstract We introduce a new wavelet-based tool called windowed scalogram difference (WSD), which has been designed to compare time series. This tool allows quantifying if two time series follow a similar pattern over time, comparing their scalograms and determining if they give the same weight to the different scales. The WSD can be seen as an alternative to another tool widely used in wavelet analysis called wavelet squared coherence (WSC) and, in some cases, it detects features that the WSC is not able to identify. As an application, the WSD is used to examine the dynamics of the integration of government bond markets in the euro area since the inception of the euro as a European single c…

Irrelevant Features, Class Separability, and Complexity of Classification Problems

2011

In this paper, analysis of class separability measures is performed in attempt to relate their descriptive abilities to geometrical properties of classification problems in presence of irrelevant features. The study is performed on synthetic and benchmark data with known irrelevant features and other characteristics of interest, such as class boundaries, shapes, margins between classes, and density. The results have shown that some measures are individually informative, while others are less reliable and only can provide complimentary information. Classification problem complexity measurements on selected data sets are made to gain additional insights on the obtained results.
