Integration of fuzzy logic and image analysis for the detection of gullies in the Calhoun Critical Zone Observatory using airborne LiDAR data

2017

Abstract The entire Piedmont of the Southeastern United States, where the Calhoun Critical Zone Observatory (CCZO) is located, experienced one of the most severe erosive events of the last two centuries. Forested areas were cleared to cultivate cotton, tobacco, and other crops during the nineteenth and early twentieth century and these land use changes, together with intense rainfalls, initiated deep gullying. An accurate mapping of these landforms is important since, despite some gully stabilization and reforestation efforts, gullies are still major contributors of sediment to streams. Mapping gullies in the CCZO area is hindered by the presence of dense canopy, which precludes the identif…

Robust H-Infinity Filter Design for Uncertain Linear Systems Over Network with Network-Induced Delays and Output Quantization

2009

This paper investigates a convex optimization approach to the problem of robust H-Infinity filtering for uncertain linear systems connected over a common digital communication network. We consider the case where quantizers are static and the parameter uncertainties are norm bounded. Firstly, we propose a new model to investigate the effect of both the output quantization levels and the network conditions. Secondly, by introducing a descriptor technique, using Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional and a suitable change of variables, new required sufficient conditions are established in terms of delay-dependent linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) for the existence of the desired network-based quantize…

Designing motion-based activities to engage students with autism in classroom settings

2015

We report on a nine-month-long observational study with teachers and students with autism in a classroom setting. We explore the impact of motion-based activities on students' behavior. In particular, we examine how the playful gaming activity impacted students' engagement, peer-directed social behaviors, and motor skills. We document the effectiveness of a collaborative game in supporting initiation of social activities between peers, and in eliciting novel body movements that students were not observed to produce outside of game play. We further identify the positive impact of game play on overall classroom engagement. This includes an "audience effect" whereby non-playing peers direct in…

Tuning the field trip: audio-guided tours as a replacement for 1-day excursions in human geography

2013

Educators are experiencing difficulties with 1-day field trips in human geography. Instead of teaching students how to apply theory in the field and learn to sense geography in everyday life, many excursions have degraded into tourist-like events where lecturers try to motivate rather passive students against a noisy urban backdrop. Although various (partly) student-led approaches have successfully addressed the issue, there are still a high number of tours that use a traditional, tutor-led model. The example of a series of three audio tours produced at Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz, Germany, shows how these conventional field trips can be transformed into audio tours that help studen…

Disclosing Conflict of Interest - Do Experience and Reputation Matter?

2009

In a controlled laboratory experiment, we investigate the effects of disclosing conflicts of interest on the reporting of information providers. First, we replicate the findings of Cain, Loewenstein, and Moore (2005) that such disclosure makes misreporting more likely as it removes moral concerns. Second, we observe that these effects diminish given experience and find, to the opposite, that disclosure reduces bias in auditors' reporting as predicted by economic theory. Third, we identify disclosure of conflicts of interest as a potential impediment to reputation formation.

Landsat TM/ETM+ and tree-ring based assessment of spatiotemporal patterns of the autumnal moth (Epirrita autumnata) in northernmost Fennoscandia

2010

Abstract We used fine-spatial resolution remotely sensed data combined with tree-ring parameters in order to assess and reconstruct disturbances in mountain birch ( Betula pubescens ) forests caused by Epirrita autumnata (autumnal moth). Research was conducted in the area of Lake Tornetrask in northern Sweden where we utilized five proxy parameters to detect insect outbreak events over the 19th and 20th centuries. Digital change detection was applied on three pairs of multi-temporal NDVI images from Landsat TM/ETM+ to detect significant reductions in the photosynthetic activity of forested areas during disturbed growing seasons. An image segmentation gap-fill procedure was developed in orde…

Developing a supplier performance analysis model : case study: Aker MH supplier performance

2012

Masteroppgave i økonomi og administrasjon - Universitetet i Agder 2012 This master thesis focuses on the use Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) for measuring supplier performance. Goal of the study is to apply a mathematical model for supplier performance measurement which would be able to handle multi-criteria. To test the model in practice, cooperation was established with case study firm (Aker Maritime Hydraulics), which is providing drilling engineering solutions to Oil & Gas industry. Proposing the model for measuring performance of existing suppliers not only demonstrates how DEA can be applied, but also sets the grounds for supplier performance improvement process in a case study firm. …

The implementation of NFC-based mobile payment in Norway : a case study of the emerging NFC business ecosystem in Norway

2013

Masteroppgave i økonomi og administrasjon - Universitetet i Agder 2013 This master thesis looks at the emergence of mobile payment in Norway with a focus on NFC technology. NFC based mobile payments represent a relative new technology that can be used in a relative new business area, which is that of mobile payments. The move towards mobile payment can be the beginning of a shift from traditional payment forms, such as cash and payment cards, to a new and modern way of conduction payments, using your own personal mobile phone. For the unobservant eye, the idea can seem like a scenario taken out of a Hollywood movie. The reality is that the technology already surrounds us in our everyday lif…

Online consumer behavior among Norwegian business students

2013

Masteroppgave i økonomi og administrasjon - Universitetet i Agder 2013 E-commerce is an ever growing phenomenon which merits further research. This study conducts a literature review in the field of online consumer behavior, focusing on online consumer purchase intention and online consumer loyalty in the context of Norwegian business students. We also conduct a survey with 196 business students in Norway, and go on to identify three important variables impacting online consumer purchase intention; online trust, previous online purchase experience and social media interaction, and two important variables impacting online consumer loyalty; online shopping enjoyment and online satisfaction. R…
