‘The Class of My Dreams’ as Envisioned by Student Teachers of English : What Is There to Teach about the Language?
2019
As part of a bigger project on the motivation of future EFL teachers, this chapter sets out to find out what a group of student teachers (N = 67) in Finland thought teaching English would involve once they had graduated from an MA programme and entered the profession a few years later. They were asked to envision ‘An English class of my dreams’ as the final home assignment on one of their first professionally oriented courses. The envisioning was done visually so the students produced pictures (by a variety of means) and provided further details about the class in writing, on the reverse side of the task sheet. The pool of multimodal data collected was subjected to content analysis, and it …
The Influence of Instructional Practices on Reading Motivation in Finland
2018
Although the differences between individuals in language and literacy skills and motivation to read start before entering school, teachers and their instructional practices play an important role in the development of reading skills and the various aspects of motivation, especially children’s interest in reading. Interest in reading has been reported to contribute to the reading activity and to the amount of reading which, in turn, promote students’ reading performance. It has been assumed that children’s previous success with learning the basics of reading has provided them with positive feedback about the learning situation, thereby strengthening their interest in reading. Teachers and th…
On the impact of computer science outreach events on K-12 students
2016
Many countries have begun to adopt computer science (CS) and computational thinking (CT) into national curricula of compulsory education and upper secondary education. It is argued that learning rigorous CS concepts not only secures a workforce for the future’s digital industries but also benefits all students by improving their problem-solving and logical reasoning skills. However, the popularity of CS as a university major declined in the beginning of the 21st century, resulting in the development of a range of student outreach activities to engage young students in the study of computing. This thesis originated from this need to attract and retain students in the CS field. The focus of thi…
Verkkoproosa : tutkimus dialogisesta kirjoittamisesta
2007
This theoretical work scrutinizes poetical aspects of writing in the web (blogs, chat, forums). The practice of writing called web prose use the elements of speech and textualize it. This brings web prose near the tradition of literature, not as art, but as style of prose writing. By using H-G Gadamer`s hermeneutics, philosophy of conversation and poetics, I ask how the tradition of writing comes in to the web. Web is scrutinized from the aspects of poetics, dialogue and publicity. The work examines language and genre from the approach of the writing studies. Dialoque has an important function also in the web prose, when writing is getting closer to conversation. At last part I ask what cha…
The Development and Precision of a Custom-Made Skitester
2021
In the sport of cross-country skiing, equipment has a direct influence on results. Ski teams do extensive testing of different ski base grinds and products on a yearly basis. To achieve reliable results, the quality of methods used for testing skis needs to be taken in to account in addition to factors including the physical characteristics of testing personnel and changes in weather conditions. The aim of this study was to introduce a custom-made skitester, that was developed for testing skis on real snow, in laboratory conditions, and to evaluate its precision. The current skitester is capable of glide testing both classic and skate skis as well as kick simulation for the testing of grip …
ProcMiner: Advancing Process Analysis and Management
2007
This paper contributes both to research and practice on process mining. Previous research on process mining has focused on mining patterns from event log files to generate process models. The process mining approach adopted in this paper is focused on producing patterns about process models, not the models themselves. The approach is demonstrated by ProcMiner -an explorative research prototype for management, consolidating, publishing, retrieving, and analyzing process models. Content-based document clustering is applied to process models represented as XML database in order to find topical groups from models. In practice, organizations face numerous challenges in managing their process mod…
