Improvements and applications of the elements of prototype-based clustering

2018

Clustering or cluster analysis is an essential part of data mining, machine learning, and pattern recognition. The most popularly applied clustering methods are partitioning-based or prototype-based methods. Prototype-based clustering methods usually have easy implementability and good scalability. These methods, such as K-means clustering, have been used for different applications in various fields. On the other hand, prototype-based clustering methods are typically sensitive to initialization, and the selection of the number of clusters for knowledge discovery purposes is not straightforward. In the era of big data, in high-velocity, ever-growing datasets, which can also be erroneous, outl…

Planning, implementing and evaluating a social and communication skills course for riding instructors

2016

Social and emotional skills are very important for effective coaching. As research in this field is still very limited, the purpose of this study was to plan, implement and evaluate a course teaching social and emotional skills to riding instructors. The objective of this research project was to analyse the usefulness and feasibility of a social and communication skills course for riding instructors. The present research study is an educational action research case study approach. The course was based on Thomas Gordon’s Model of Human Relationships and included different skills such as I-Messages, Active Listening, Shifting Gears and Problem Solving Skills. In total four participants took p…

Albanian students’ motives for preferring certain real-life situations for learning mathematics

2011

This article reports on a qualitative investigation of Albanian students’ motives for preferring certain real-life situations to be used in school mathematics, and possible connections of these motives to characteristics and issues within Albanian society. It is based on realistic interviews with students from Grades 8 and 9 in a school in the district of Shkodra in northern Albania. Interviews were conducted after students experienced five teaching units which dealt with mathematics embedded in real-life situations. Results are expressed in terms of contextmechanism-outcome configurations as proposed by critical realist theory. Most of the resultsare supported by those from a previous quan…

Forgetful Audiences in Julius Caesar

2012

Julius Caesar exhibits a pattern of audience forgetfulness, when characters forget scenes they have just witnessed, or when they remember them imperfectly. This p…

Évolution historique des critères de reconnaissance du statut d’État à des entités contestées

2018

The historical evolution of the criteria for recognition is only a reflection of the historical evolution of the functions that the act of recognition has fulfilled, and is fulfilling today in international law. Among the various possibilities, this contribution identifies at least 5 functions historically fulfilled by the act of recognition: co-optation, recognition, promotion, sanction, validation. Thus, the idea developed is that by virtue of the function fulfilled, the role played by different types of criteria of legitimacy, legality, effectiveness is destined to change.

Potential-assisted deposition of mixed alkanethiol self-assembled monolayers

2010

Abstract Preparation of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) usually involves passive incubation. The recently developed potential-assisted deposition is indeed more selective as well as 100-fold faster than passive adsorption, thereby enhancing the reproducibility of the monolayer deposition. This article aims to identify the electrodeposition conditions necessary to prepare mixed alkanethiol SAMs on gold surface. Parameters such as concentrations in solution, electrode polarization and deposition time were examined for two chain lengths, C 3 (mercaptopropionic acid, MPA) and C 18 (octadecanethiol, ODT). The kinetics and composition of the SAMs were systematically characterized by reductive st…

Students’ Experiences of Reflective Writing as a Tool for Learning in Physiotherapy Education

2015

The purpose of this study was to examine physiotherapy students’ experiences of reflective writing. The students (n = 32) were asked to video record their practical activities at school and at workplaces, and to write reflective journals on their experiences. The research data about students’ experiences of reflective writing were collected by interviewing the students. The data were analyzed phenomenographically. The findings revealed four qualitatively different experiences of reflective writing: 1) writing as a useless task; 2) writing as a tool for deepening understanding; 3) writing as a tool for self-reflection; and 4) writing as a tool for professional development. These categories d…
