Territories and effects on student living conditions : a case study of the Paris student housing scheme
2021
International audience; In a context of competition between student cities, the local level is increasingly involved in improving student living conditions and is working to make their territory more attractive to students. A focus is made on the "Aide à l'Installation dans un Logement pour les Étudiants" (Help for students to settle in) of the city of Paris, a system that aims to promote the social mix of students. A quantitative evaluation of the system was carried out using the theory of capabilities. The program has increased the scope of possibilities by giving students the opportunity to live in Paris. However, the autonomy so sought after by the students is specific in that the finan…
Engineering students' engagement with resources in an online learning environment
2018
International audience; This study explores engineering students' interactions with different resources in an online learning environment. The constituent resources of this environment involve MyMathLab which is an online interactive system for practicing mathematics, the tutorial videos, and the textbook. We conducted a qualitative case study to observe a small group of undergraduate engineering students interacting with the resources in a Calculus course. Employing the documentational approach to didactics, we identified several techniques while participants used resources to practice mathematics in MyMathLab environment. We discuss the pragmatic and epistemic value of the identified tech…
Predictors of performance in engineering mathematics
2018
International audience; Mathematics in university courses was identified as a main obstacle for engineering students in the beginning of their study. Since difficulties with mathematics could lead to a dropout, our research aims to analyse students' profiles referring to individual characteristics that allow identifying possible risks for students' achievement or success in the first year of study. As a first step to identify possibly risky profiles, we started to find possible predictors of students' performance. For this, we give a short overview of the research state and our derived research interest. We discuss theoretical constructs that are possibly crucial characteristics of students…

Student experiences of project-based learning in an analytical chemistry laboratory course in higher education
2020
Abstract This study describes students’ experiences in project-based learning (PjBL) incorporated as part of a revised undergraduate analytical chemistry laboratory course. We examined which phases were the easiest as well as the most challenging and what student skills developed during the research project. The research data were collected between 2016 and 2018 via two questionnaires. They were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. One questionnaire focused on the whole course (in 2016–2018, n = 127) of which only the answers on the research project questions were analyzed. The other questionnaire focused on only the research project (in 2018, n = 42). Based on the results of our…

Collaborative professional practice for strengthening teacher educator identities in Eritrea
2021
Strengthening the identities of teacher educators is critical to quality teacher education and implementing change in the education sector. This study examines the professional identities of Eritrean teacher educators and how these identities can be strengthened through collaborative professional practice in a challenging context currently under reform. The focus is on the professional capacity building activities at the College of Education in Eritrea, which were implemented in collaboration with Finnish education partners. The paper reports on findings from an action-research informed study of a semester-long series of professional development seminars and an interview study with individu…
Reverse Catmull-Clark Subdivision
2006
Reverse subdivision consists in constructing a coarse mesh of a model from a finer mesh of this same model. In this paper, we give formulas for reverse Catmull-Clark subdivision. These formulas allow the constructing of a coarse mesh for almost all meshes. The condition for being able to apply these formulas is that the mesh to be reversed must be generated by the subdivision of a coarse mesh. Except for this condition, the mesh can be arbitrary. Vertices can be regular or extraordinary and the mesh itself can be arbitrary (triangular, quadrilateral…).

Towards Automated Classification of Firmware Images and Identification of Embedded Devices
2017
Part 4: Operating System and Firmware Security; International audience; Embedded systems, as opposed to traditional computers, bring an incredible diversity. The number of devices manufactured is constantly increasing and each has a dedicated software, commonly known as firmware. Full firmware images are often delivered as multiple releases, correcting bugs and vulnerabilities, or adding new features. Unfortunately, there is no centralized or standardized firmware distribution mechanism. It is therefore difficult to track which vendor or device a firmware package belongs to, or to identify which firmware version is used in deployed embedded devices. At the same time, discovering devices tha…
