In ogni interve…

The Emotional Self: A Relational View (El sujeto emocional: un punto de vista relacional)

2023

Emotions are experiences that connect us to others in deep and meaningful ways, however, there is something about them that makes them, at the same time, the most intimate of our experiences. The way in which I understand the latter departs from the notions of privacy or interiority which are central to the debate on the asymmetry between the first and the third person. The notion of intimacy to which I allude here is linked, rather, to the experience of being vulnerable. As is well known, we can only feel an emotion for something we care about and, in this sense, every emotional experience is an experience in which we are exposed, that is, in which there is something at stake for us. What is important in history teaching? Student class teachers’ conceptions

2020

In Finland, history is taught in comprehensive schools at both primary and secondary levels. In primary schools, teachers are qualified class teachers who study one or two history courses during their teacher education. The amount of history taught in teacher education is limited, but student class teachers have studied history while at comprehensive school and general upper secondary school, and they have lived experience of historical cultures as members of different groups and communities. Thus, they have conceptions of what history teaching in school is, and what it should be. In this article, student class teachers’ conceptions of teaching history were examined using data (n=92) consi…

Conceptions of Assessment as an Integral Part of Language Learning: A Case Study of Finnish and Chinese University Students

2021

Assessment is viewed as an internal and pivotal part of learning, where cultural factors, previous experiences, and future aspirations affect learners’ perceptions. In recent years, an increasing number of western universities have established their campuses or “dual” programmes in China. In the first Sino–Finnish programme, 293 Finnish and Chinese students participated in the same English for Specific Purposes (ESP) course. This study investigated students’ perceptions of assessment through an adapted version of the “Students’ Conceptions of Assessment” inventory, and it explored if the responses on each conception differ between the groups. …

A Scale of Knowledge and Beliefs about Developmental Dyslexia: Scale Development and Validation

2014

Abstract The purpose of this study was to create and validate a scale measuring knowledge and beliefs regarding developmental dyslexia. A four-step procedure was followed to achieve this objective. A literature review generated a preliminary pool of 65 items. A group of 12 university teachers of learning disabilities read the items for content and face validity and offered comments. Based on their comments, some items were combined, and confusing items were changed or eliminated, which left a scale of 50 items, with the response options of true (V), false (F) or dont know (NS). Later, each participant, using a description of the scales, placed each item into one of the three subscales. An i…

Study of explicit instruction and structured inquiry methods on knowledge acquisition and conceptual change in science learning

2013

International audience; This study compares two pedagogical methods: explicit instruction and structured inquiry methods. We question the effectiveness of the two learning methods to acquire scientific knowledge and to modify learner conceptions. Do explicit instruction and structured inquiry methods have the same impact on the learning of science? If not, why?The results of this work show that explicit instruction and structured inquiry methods increase strongly acquisition of knowledge and improve weakness conception. So these two methods are same positive effects on acquisition of scientific knowledge but they are also the same negative results on evolution of conceptions because the conc…

Evolution of scientific conceptions and knowledge among gymnasium pupils

2014

International audience; Two major models investigate the relationship between conceptions and knowledge: the KVP model of Clement and the structural model of Balacheff. In order to prove the necessity to shift the conceptions as claimed by Giordan’s allosteric model, it is important to study the evolution and the relationship between conceptions and knowledge. This research deals with the following questions: what sort of relationship can be established between conceptions and knowledge? What factor can make these two parameters evolve? This study was carried out on 45 pupils (two classrooms). It intended to collect conceptions and knowledge before and after science learning training. Indiv…

Finnish 5th and 6th grade students' pre-instructional conceptions of artificial intelligence (AI) and their implications for AI literacy education

2022

In the present paper, we report the findings of a qualitative survey study of 195 Finnish 5th and 6th grade students' pre-instructional conceptions of artificial intelligence (AI). An exploration of these initial conceptions provides insight into students' preliminary understanding of the topic and informs curriculum designers and teachers about misconceptions that might jeopardize student learning. The findings suggest that students' initial conceptions of AI are varied and often uninformed. For instance, references to the role of data in training AI applications were practically nonexistent. Instead, AI was often described as an anthropomorphic technology that possesses cognitive qualitie…

Development of a Chemistry Concept Inventory for General Chemistry Students at Norwegian and Finnish Universities

2018

A Chemistry concept inventory has been developed for assessing students’ learning and identifying alternative conceptions that students may have in general chemistry. The inventory aims at functioning as a tool for adjusting teaching practices in chemistry and is mainly aimed at assessing students’ learning during general chemistry courses. The inventory was administered as a post-test in a general chemistry course at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in spring 2015, and evaluated using different statistical tests, focusing both on item analysis and the test as a whole. The results from this analysis indicated that the concept inventory is a reliable and discriminati…

La Concepción de María en el tiempo. Recuperación de fórmulas tempranas de representación de la Inmaculada Concepción en la retórica visual del virre…

2014

This paper addresses a genuine aspect of conceptionist visual rhetoric during the Viceroyalty of New Spain: the recycling of Immaculate Conception earlier types of representation that, with the consolidation of the image of the Immaculate derived from the Tota Pulchra, had fallen deprecated in the peninsular art. The tendency of artists and patrons towards these typologies reveals a key aspect to understand the definition of Hispanic culture during the centuries of the Baroque. In the peripheral areas of the Empire, instead of continuous affirmation of the existence of a single Hispanic world, the springs of control over the religious image allowed variability in the implementation of the C…
