Integration Through Participation Introductory Notes to the Study of Administrative Integration
2002
When aiming at studying the interconnectedness of administrative systems - and in particular the integration of domestic governance systems and the institutions of the European Union - at least two variables are important to address: (i) the intensity and frequency of cross-level interaction and participation amongst the members of these systems, and (ii) the principles of organization being uppermost at both levels of governance. This article argues that in order to measure administrative integration, particular emphasis should be attached to the way these variables impact upon the organization members individually. Put more precisely, I argue that studies of administrative integration sho…
Career practitioners' conceptions of social media in career services
2013
This article reports the outcomes of a study, undertaken from a phenomenographic perspective, of career practitioners' conceptions of social media usage in career services. Fifteen Finnish career practitioners – representing comprehensive, secondary and higher education as well as public employment services – were interviewed in focus groups. The analysis of the interview data revealed five distinct descriptive categories reflecting the career practitioners' conceptions of social media's use in career services. Social media in career services was conceived as (1) unnecessary, (2) dispensable, (3) a possibility, (4) desirable and (5) indispensable. The results indicated associations between …
Tuvās vēstures ainas. Vēsturisko priekšstatu par Livoniju rašanās 13.gadsimta historiogrāfija
2014
SUP&R DST: SUstainable pavement & railways decision support tool
2018
6th International Symposium on Life-Cycle Civil Engineering, IALCCE 2018; Ghent; Belgium; 28 October 2018 through 31 October 2018, GHENT, BELGIQUE, 28-/10/2018 - 31/10/2018; In order to help the decisions makers to efficiently address eco-design for transport infrastructure technologies, a decision support toll (DST) was developed in the scope of the training-through-research programme Sustainable Pavements & Railways Initial Training Network (www.superitn.eu). It consists of a computational platform that implements a conceptual framework developed to quantify sustainability. It comes with a set of sustainability indicators tailored to both road and railway systems as well as several ob…
The article is dealing with an unpublished Immaculate Conception in gilded and painted alabaster located in a private collection of the island of Malta. Its iconography is very attractive. It firmly establishes the dogma of the Immacul…
Knowledge formalization and recommendation in computational design synthesis for 4D printing
2022
Coined in 2013, 4D printing is considered as a promising technology that combines additive manufacturing (AM) processes and smart materials (SMs). Through this technology objects can change over time in terms of functionalities, shape, or properties under the effect of energy stimulation. Although AM processes allow shape, hierarchical, functional, and materials complexities to the 3D objects, the conjunction with SMs provides much more freedom in designing adaptive/transformative structures. Over the last decade, a growing body of research with ad hoc proofs-of-concept have been proposed at the physical level (i.e., by using different AM processes with commercial or customized 3D printers …
The development and alignment of pedagogical conceptions of health education
2015
Abstract This study examined the development and alignment of conceptions of health education as a subject, and of its teaching and learning, among Finnish health education student teachers (n = 20). Longitudinal phenomenographic data (essays, interviews) were collected at two time points during health education studies, and at one time point after the participants had gained 1–3 years of work experience. The proportion of participants expressing the most sophisticated pedagogical conceptions decreased during teacher training, but increased after the gaining of work experience. Moreover, fewer than half of the participants expressed pedagogical conceptions that advanced in broad alignment w…
The impact of diet during adolescence on the neonatal health of offspring: evidence on the importance of preconception diet. The HUNT study
2020
Background: Emerging evidence suggests that parents' nutritional status before and at the time of conception influences the lifelong physical and mental health of their child. Yet little is known about the relationship between diet in adolescence and the health of the next generation at birth. This study examined data from Norwegian cohorts to assess the relationship between dietary patterns in adolescence and neonatal outcomes. Methods: Data from adolescents who participated in the Nord-TrA¸ndelag Health Study (Young-HUNT) were merged with birth data for their offspring through the Medical Birth Registry of Norway (MBRN). Young-HUNT1 collected data from 8980 adolescents between 1995 and 19…
Do emissions from landfill fires affect pregnancy outcomes? A retrospective study after arson at a solid waste facility in Sicily
2019
ObjectivesIn response to public health concern about effects of arson at solid waste management plants in July 2012, we analysed vital statistics data to evaluate any potential effect on pregnancies at different gestational ages of pollutants emitted from the landfill on fire.SettingA community living near the largest landfill plant in Sicily.ParticipantsThe study group comprised 551 births, live births and stillbirths from pregnancies of mothers residing in the extra-urban exposed area, conceived during a 40 week period during which the highest fire’s peak might have influenced pregnancy.Primary and secondary outcome measuresBirth outcomes (gestational age <37 and <32 weeks, low birt…
Preconception genome medicine: current state and future perspectives to improve infertility diagnosis and reproductive and health outcomes based on i…
2021
Abstract BACKGROUND Our genetic code is now readable, writable and hackable. The recent escalation of genome-wide sequencing (GS) applications in population diagnostics will not only enable the assessment of risks of transmitting well-defined monogenic disorders at preconceptional stages (i.e. carrier screening), but also facilitate identification of multifactorial genetic predispositions to sub-lethal pathologies, including those affecting reproductive fitness. Through GS, the acquisition and curation of reproductive-related findings will warrant the expansion of genetic assessment to new areas of genomic prediction of reproductive phenotypes, pharmacogenomics and molecular embryology, fur…
