Validation of two portable bioelectrical impedance analyses for the assessment of body composition in school age children

2017

Background Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a convenient and child-friendly method for longitudinal analysis of changes in body composition. However, most validation studies of BIA have been performed on adult Caucasians. The present cross-sectional study investigated the validity of two portable BIA devices, the Inbody 230 (BIA8MF) and the Tanita BC-418 (BIA8SF), in healthy Taiwanese children. Methods Children aged 7–12 years (72 boys and 78 girls) were recruited. Body composition was measured by the BIA8SF and the BIA8MF. Dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) was used as the reference method. Results There were strong linear correlations in body composition measurements between the BIA…

Amelogenin test: From forensics to quality control in clinical and biochemical genomics.

2007

Abstract Background The increasing number of samples from the biomedical genetic studies and the number of centers participating in the same involves increasing risk of mistakes in the different sample handling stages. We have evaluated the usefulness of the amelogenin test for quality control in sample identification. Methods Amelogenin test (frequently used in forensics) was undertaken on 1224 individuals participating in a biomedical study. Concordance between referred sex in the database and amelogenin test was estimated. Additional sex-error genetic detecting systems were developed. Results The overall concordance rate was 99.84% (1222/1224). Two samples showed a female amelogenin test…

Multiple sclerosis in twins from continental Italy and Sardinia: a nationwide study.

2005

Knowledge about the balance between heritable and nonheritable risk in multiple sclerosis (MS) is based on twin studies in high-prevalence areas. In a study that avoided ascertainment limitations and directly compared continental Italy (medium-prevalence) and Sardinia (high-prevalence), we ascertained 216 pairs from 34,549 patients. This gives a twinning rate of 0.62% among MS patients, significantly less than that of the general population. In continental Italy, probandwise concordance was 14.5% (95% confidence interval, 5.1-23.8) for monozygotic and 4.0% (95% confidence interval, 0.8-7.1) for dizygotic twins. Results in Sardinia resemble those in northern populations but in limited number…

Intereye Spatial Relationship of Abnormal Neuroretinal Rim Locations in Glaucoma Patients from the Diagnostic Innovations in Glaucoma Study

2006

Purpose To determine the spatial relationship in neuroretinal rim parameter values between eyes in ocular hypertensives, glaucoma suspects, and glaucoma patients. Design Observational-cross-sectional study. Methods A total of 334 eyes of 167 patients were included. All patients underwent confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscopy imaging in both eyes. Intereye concordance ratio of abnormal rim sectors as classified by the Moorfield regression analysis (MRA) was calculated as the ratio of matching abnormal rim areas to the total number of abnormal rim areas. The amount of agreement was calculated for each sector separately. Results Of the right (left) eyes, 39 (39) eyes were classified “borderli…

Concordance and Clinical Significance of Uncommon Variants of Bladder Urothelial Carcinoma in Transurethral Resection and Radical Cystectomy Specimens

2014

To evaluate the concordance and prognostic role of histologic variants of bladder urothelial carcinoma in transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) and radical cystectomy (RC) specimens. METHODS Clinicopathologic information available at the time of RC and follow-up data from 4110 RC specimens, collected between January 2000 and December 2009 at 17 tertiary referral centers were retrospectively analyzed and evaluated for the presence or absence of uncommon variants of bladder urothelial carcinoma. The presence or absence of uncommon variants of bladder urothelial carcinoma was evaluated on previous TURBT specimens of patients undergoing RC. Cox regression was used to assess the impac…

Quality analysis of population-based information on cancer stage at diagnosis across Europe, with presentation of stage-specific cancer survival esti…

2017

Abstract Background Cancer registries (CRs) are fundamental for estimating cancer burden, evaluating screening and monitoring health service performance. Stage at diagnosis—an essential information item collected by CRs—has been made available, for the first time, by CRs participating in EUROCARE-5. We analysed the quality of this information and estimated stage-specific survival across Europe for CRs with good data quality. Data and methods Sixty-two CRs sent stage (as TNM, condensed TNM or extent of disease) for 15 cancers diagnosed in 2000–2007. We assessed the quality, partly by comparing stage according to the three systems. We also developed procedures to reconstruct stage (categories…

Influence of the Geriatric Oncology Consultation On the Final Therapeutic Decision In Elderly Subjects With Cancer: Analysis of 191 Patients

2014

International audience; Objectives: evaluate the impact of the Geriatric Oncology consultation on the final therapeutic management of cancer in elderly patients aged 70 and older. Design: retrospective study. Setting: the Pilot coordination unit in Geriatric Oncology of Cote d'Or, Burgundy, France. Participants: From January 2010 to December 2010, 191 patients with cancer aged 70 and older. Measurements: the concordance between the treatments proposed following the tumor Board, those proposed following the Geriatric evaluation (GE) and those actually given to the patients was evaluated using the kappa agreement test. Results: One hundred and ninety-one patients were included. Mean age was 8…

RAPP-children: A new tool for assessing quality of life in patients with asthma and rhinitis

2020

Background: RhinAsthma Patient Perspective (RAPP) is a short, validated questionnaire for assessing health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in adult patients with comorbid asthma and rhinitis, while a paediatric version is still not available. Objective: The current study aimed to develop and validate the RAPP-children questionnaire. Methods: RAPP-children was derived by combining RhinAsthma-children subscales into five unique items. At baseline (T0) and after 30 days (T1), 150 children (6-11 years) with comorbid asthma (predominantly intermittent or mild persistent) and rhinitis were given the following: RAPP-children, RhinAsthma-children, Paediatric Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire (PA…

Association of lifestyle factors and neuropsychological development of 4-year-old children

2020

Background: We aimed to assess how lifestyle factors such as diet, sleep, screen viewing, and physical activity, individually, as well as in a combined score, were associated with neuropsychological development in pre-school age children. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study in 1650 children of 4 years of age, from the Environment and Childhood Project (INMA) population-based birth cohorts in four regions of Spain. Children were classified per a childhood healthy lifestyle score (CHLS) with a range of 0 to 4 that included eating in concordance with the Mediterranean diet (1 point)

Intrinsic Subtypes and Gene Expression Profiles in Primary and Metastatic Breast Cancer.

2017

Biological changes that occur during metastatic progression of breast cancer are still incompletely characterized. In this study, we compared intrinsic molecular subtypes and gene expression in 123 paired primary and metastatic tissues from breast cancer patients. Intrinsic subtype was identified using a PAM50 classifier and χ2 tests determined the differences in variable distribution. The rate of subtype conversion was 0% in basal-like tumors, 23.1% in HER2-enriched (HER2-E) tumors, 30.0% in luminal B tumors, and 55.3% in luminal A tumors. In 40.2% of cases, luminal A tumors converted to luminal B tumors, whereas in 14.3% of cases luminal A and B tumors converted to HER2-E tumors. We ident…
