Synthesis of Hydroquinoid C- and O-Biphenyl Disaccharides by Chromium-Templated Benzannulation Reactions

Organometallic monosaccharides 6−10 containing a chromium styrylcarbene skeleton have been synthesized in quantitative yield from O-glycoside methylcarbene complexes 1−5 bearing diisopropylidene-protected glucose, mannose, galactose, or fructose in a trans-selective aldol condensation with benzaldehyde. These compounds undergo a chromium-templated benzannulation upon reaction with ethynyl glucoside to give diastereoisomeric mixtures of Cr(CO)3 complexes. The differences in their thermodynamic stability was exploited in a diastereoselective synthesis of hydroquinoid biphenyl disaccharides 12−16 in 67−88% yields. (© Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Characterization of melt-polymerized polycarbonate: preparative fractionation, branching distribution and simulation

Melt-polymerized bisphenol-A polycarbonate materials characterized by a low degree of branching were fractionated according to molecular weight by the continuous polymer fractionation (CPF) method. The distribution of two types of end-groups and in-chain salicylate moieties arising from thermal rearrangement reactions were assessed across the molecular weight distribution by analysis of the fractions. Experimentally determined branching densities of the fractions agreed well with a molecular simulation based on a random sampling polycondensation model. The ATAL within the 2017 Asian Monsoon Anticyclone: Microphysical aerosol properties derived from aircraft-borne in situ measurements

The Asian summer monsoon is an effective pathway for aerosol particles and precursors from the planetary boundary layer over Central, South, and East Asia into the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere. An enhancement of aerosol particles within the Asian monsoon anticyclone (AMA), called the Asian tropopause aerosol layer (ATAL), has been observed by satellites. We discuss airborne in situ and remote sensing observations of aerosol microphysical properties conducted during the 2017 StratoClim field campaign within the AMA region. Real-time microfluorescence studies of Langmuir-Blodgett deposition: Monolayer adsorption and desorption

Abstract Observations of the meniscus region in a typical Langmuir-Blodgett configuration are obtained using fluorescence microscopy. Studies of the meniscus position as a function of pH demonstrate that the meniscus height increases upon charging the monolayer owing to the repulsive interaction between monolayer and substrate surfaces. Through the correspondence between meniscus height and contact angle the adhesion forces between monolayer and substrate as a function of monolayer charge are assessed. The phenomenon of desorption upon resubmerging a deposited film is described and it is shown that the meniscus height at the onset of the desorption is greater for higher pH.

Pore Size Analysis of MCM-41 Type Adsorbents by Means of Nitrogen and Argon Adsorption

Methods of nonlocal density functional theory (NLDFT), proposed recently for predictions of adsorption equilibrium and calculations of pore size distributions in micro- and mesoporous materials, were tested on reference MCM-41 materials. Five newly synthesized MCM-41 adsorbents with presumably uniform pore channels varying from 32 to 45 Å were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption at 77 K, and argon adsorption at 77 and 87 K. Phase diagram of polymer blends in confined geometry

Within self-consistent field theory we study the phase behavior of a symmetrical binary AB polymer blend confined into a thin film. The film surfaces interact with the monomers via short range potentials. One surface attracts the A component and the corresponding smei-infinite system exhibits a first order wetting transition. The surface interaction of the opposite surface is varied as to study the crossover from capillary condensation for symmetric surfaces fields to the interface localization/delocalization transition for antisymmetric surface fields. Synthesis, biological evaluation, and: In silico studies of novel chalcone: In pyrazoline-based 1,3,5-triazines as potential anticancer agents

A novel series of triazin-chalcones (7,8)a-g and triazin-N-(3,5-dichlorophenyl)pyrazolines (9,10)a-g were synthesized and evaluated for their anticancer activity against nine different cancer strains. Triazine ketones 5 and 6 were synthesized from the cyanuric chloride 1 by using stepwise nucleophilic substitution of the chlorine atom. These ketones were subsequently subjected to a Claisen-Schmidt condensation reaction with aromatic aldehydes affording chalcones (7,8)a-g. Water uptake and equilibrium sizes of aerosol particles at high relative humidities: Their dependence on the composition of the water-soluble material

Equilibrium water uptake and the sizes of atmospheric aerosol particles have for the first time been determined for high relative humidities, i.e., for humidities above 95 percent, as a function of the particles chemical composition. For that purpose a new treatment of the osmotic coefficient has been developed and experimentally confirmed. It is shown that the equilibrium water uptake and the equilibrium sizes of atmospheric aerosol particles at large relative humidities are significantly dependent on their chemical composition.
