A Multi-Variate Predictability Framework to Assess Invasive Cardiac Activity and Interactions during Atrial Fibrillation

2017

Objective: This study introduces a predictability framework based on the concept of Granger causality (GC), in order to analyze the activity and interactions between different intracardiac sites during atrial fibrillation (AF). Methods: GC-based interactions were studied using a three-electrode analysis scheme with multi-variate autoregressive models of the involved preprocessed intracardiac signals. The method was evaluated in different scenarios covering simulations of complex atrial activity as well as endocardial signals acquired from patients. Results: The results illustrate the ability of the method to determine atrial rhythm complexity and to track and map propagation during AF. Conc…

Adenosine activates a potassium conductance in guinea-pig atrial heart muscle.

1983

Adenosine shortens the action potential and diminishes the force of contraction in guinea-pig left atria. These effects may be brought about by the activation of a potassium conductance. This assumption is supported by voltage clamp and 42K release experiments.

Management of incomplete regional anaesthesia in Germany: results of a nation-wide survey.

2007

Background:  Regional anaesthesia (RA) provides well-defined benefits with known attendant risks. However, incomplete blockade may introduce unanticipated risks depending on the compensatory measures employed. Until now, no data were available characterizing the pattern of response of German anaesthesiologists in this situation. This study analyses interventions in response to incomplete RA in a nation-wide setting. Methods:  A questionnaire was sent to every German anaesthesia department (n= 1381). Questions focused on interventions coping with an incomplete RA and differentiated between a pre- and a peri-surgical setting and measures to face pain outside the surgical field. If systemic su…

Measurement of energy expenditure by activity monitors: is it feasible to measure energy expenditure using tiny portable monitors?

2013

Physical inactivity has a major health effect worldwide. It is stated in the currently published physical activity recommendations for adults to promote and maintain health, that all healthy adults need moderate intensity physical activity for a minimum of 30 minutes, 5 days per week or vigorous intensity aerobic physical activity for a minimum of 20 minutes, 3 days per week. Physical activity can be defined as any bodily movement produced by the contraction of skeletal muscles that substantially increases energy expenditure and is characterised by its intensity, duration, frequency and mode of activity. Ideally, all these aspects should be recorded during physical activity measurements. Ho…

A cross‐sectional, multi‐center study on treatment of facial acne scars with low‐energy double‐pass 1450‐nm diode laser

2020

Acne scars are the ultimate outcome of acne vulgaris, a prevalent skin disorder affecting the pilo-sebaceous unit. Laser resurfacing has been demonstrated to be an efficient therapy option for acne scars. Hence, we adopted this concept and conducted a study to evaluate the safety and efficacy of low-energy double-pass 1450-nm diode laser on acne scars. This study was conducted on 48 patients with acne scars, treated at 4-week interval with low-energy double-pass 1450-nm diode laser. Patients were evaluated clinically and with photographs, at day 0, first month and third month post the final treatment and during follow-up visit. Five treatment sessions were completed by all patients. Approxi…

Conduction velocity study in type 1 diabetic patients.

1989

The role of metabolic abnormalities in the development of diabetic neuropathy is controversial. To investigate the peripheral nerve function and the influence of hyperglycemia on nerve conduction in insulin-dependent diabetes, a one-year neurophysiological study was carried out in 30 type 1 diabetic patients ranging in age from 2-16 years. During the 12-month follow-up period the glycosylated hemoglobin determination, motor conduction velocity of the peroneal nerve and the motor and sensory conduction of the tibial nerve were assessed 3 times, at the beginning of the study and every 6 months thereafter. The sensory latency was found significantly delayed in these patients as compared with t…

Effect of acetyl-l-carnitine in the treatment of diabetic peripheral neuropathy : A systematic review and meta-analysis

2017

Background/aim: Deficiency of acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC) and L-carnitine (LC) appears to play a role in peripheral diabetic neuropathy, although the evidence in humans is still limited. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis investigating the effect of ALC on pain and electromyographic parameters in people with diabetic neuropathy. Methods: A literature search in major databases, without language restriction, was undertaken. Eligible studies were randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or pre-and post-test studies. The effect of ALC supplementation on pain perception and electromyographic parameters in patients with diabetic neuropathy was compared vs. a control group (RCTs). The effe…

Eustachian tube dysfunction in OSMF- often present seldom discovered

2014

Objectives: To evaluate the effect of OSMF on the eustachian tube function and to correlate it with various grades of the disease. Study Design: Twenty OSMF patients (40 ears) and 20 healthy controls (40 ears) were evaluated for eustachian tube function by eustachian tube function test, tympanometry and audiometry. Results: The audiometric and tympanometric analysis showed no significant differences in hearing abilities of OSMF patients and controls and between various grades of OSMF, indicating no hearing impairment. However, eustachian tube function test revealed a statistically significant difference in eustachian tube function in OSMF patients and controls. Further, there was a signific…

Online Professionalism-2018 Update of European Association of Urology (@Uroweb) Recommendations on the Appropriate Use of Social Media.

2018

Abstract Context Social media (SoMe) has transformed communication among health care professionals by enabling rapid and global information exchange. Yet, the novelty of SoMe and concerns about potential risks continue to be barriers to adoption. Objective To encourage appropriate professional use of SoMe by physicians in concordance with best practices and to update practical guidelines for effective and professional use of these communication technologies. Evidence aquisition The European Association of Urology (EAU; @Uroweb) brought together a committee of SoMe stakeholders in the urology field. PubMed and the grey literature were searched to identify SoMe position papers by other medica…
