Crystal structure and physical properties of Mg6Cu16Si7-type M6Ni16Si7, for M=Mg, Sc, Ti, Nb, and Ta

Five compounds were investigated for magnetic character and superconductivity, all with non-magnetic nickel and band structures containing flat bands and steep bands. The syntheses and crystal structures, refined by powder X-ray diffraction, are reported for M{sub 6}Ni{sub 16}Si{sub 7}, where M = Mg, Sc, Ti, Nb, and Ta. All compounds form in the Mg{sub 6}Cu{sub 16}Si{sub 7} structure type. Resistance measurements are also reported on M{sub 6}Ni{sub 16}Si{sub 7} (M = Mg, Sc, Ti, and Nb) down to 0.3 K, with all four showing metallic conductivity. No superconductivity is observed. Preparation and x-ray pole-figure characterization of DC-sputtered Bi-2201, Bi-2212 and Bi-2223 thin films

Thin films of the three members of the superconducting series , n = 1,2,3, were prepared by diode sputtering. X-ray characterization shows that all the films are single phase and c-axis oriented and in addition they are epitaxially grown. The latter is found by x-ray pole-figure measurements taken with a four-circle diffractometer. These are emphasized in this work. AC susceptibility measurements show that, while the 2201 films are not superconducting until 4 K, the transition temperatures of the 2212 films are 82 K - 90 K and of the 2223 films 84 K - 89 K.
Investigation of the epitaxy of thin YBa2Cu3O7-delta films

Abstract The degree of epitaxy of thin sputtered and laser ablated films have been investigated by Raman spectroscopy. Using the selection rules for Raman scattering for the different phonons in YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7−δ the superconducting films on SrTiO 3 and MgO are found to be epitaxially grown with the c -axis perpendicular to the substrate. On ZrO 2 the films also grow with their c -axis perpendicular to the substrate, but with randomly oriented a / b -directions in the plane of the film.
Preparation and properties of Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8 thin films

Anex situ process has been developed to produce thin superconducting Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8 films. The properties of films grown on different substrates using different annealing regimes were studied. Critical temperatures of 103–107 K were measured on films prepared in a broad range of annealing temperatures on SrTiO3, LaAlO3, and Y-ZrO2 substrates. A critical current density,Jc, of 2×106 A/cm2 at 77 K was measured on LaAlO3. Film morphology was studied by SEM, AFM, and STM.
Efficient Peltier refrigeration by a pair of normal metal/ insulator/superconductor junctions

We suggest and demonstrate in experiment that two normal metal /insulator/ superconductor (NIS) tunnel junctions combined in series to form a symmetric SINIS structure can operate as an efficient Peltier refrigerator. Specifically, it is shown that the SINIS structure with normal-state junction resistances 1.0 and 1.1 k$\Omega$ is capable of reaching a temperature of about 100 mK starting from 300 mK. We estimate the corresponding cooling power to be 1.5 pW per total junction area of 0.8 $\mu$m$^2$ at $T= 300$ mK.
Nonlinear current-voltage characteristics due to quantum tunneling of phase slips in superconducting Nb nanowire networks

We report on the transport properties of an array of N about 30 interconnected Nb nanowires, grown by sputtering on robust porous Si substrates. The analyzed system exhibits a broad resistive transition in zero magnetic field, H, and highly nonlinear V(I) characteristics as a function of H which can be both consistently described by quantum tunneling of phase slips.
Trapping of quasiparticles of a nonequilibrium superconductor

We have performed experiments where hot electrons are extracted from a normal metal into a superconductor through a tunnel junction. We have measured the cooling performance of such NIS junctions, especially in the cases where another normal metal electrode, a quasiparticle trap, is attached to the superconductor at different distances from the junction in direct metal-to-metal contact or through an oxide barrier. The direct contact at a submicron distance allows superior thermalization of the superconductor. We have analyzed theoretically the heat transport in this system. Raman scattering studies of ultrathin-layer YBa2Cu3O7/PrBa2Cu3O7 superlattices

We present Raman scattering studies ofc-oriented ultrathin-layer superconducting (YBa2Cu3O7) m /(PrBa2Cu3O7) n superlattices. For the superlattice with (m=2,n=1) sequence, Raman spectra reveal a new line in the spectral region around 320 cm−1. It is interpreted as a mode representing a combination of IR optical phonons of the Y-sublayers with an admixture of aB1g type Raman active vibration in the Pr sublayers. This new line, which is similar to those from the interior of the Brillouin zone of the original lattice, does not exhibit superconductivity-induced self-energy effects, although its counterpart in the pure substance does. Refrigeration of a dielectric membrane by superconductor/insulator/normalmetal/insulator/superconductor tunneling

We have applied tunneling of electrons between a normal metal and a superconductor to refrigerate a thin dielectric membrane attached to the normal electrode of a superconductor/ insulator/normal-metal/insulator/superconductor (SINIS) structure. Starting from T≈200 mK, a decrease in temperature of several mK was observed, measured by a separate thermometer on the membrane. It should be straightforward to improve the refrigerator performance to the level of the recently demonstrated SINIS electron cooling method, such that the drop in the lattice temperature would be more than an order of magnitude larger.
