2021

Focusing on identities and conflicts in literature, this article proposes an analysis of the bifid, metamorphic and conflictual figure of the werewolf. Particularly, Marie de France’s Lay of Bisclavret is analyzed in the light of Giorgio Agamben’s philosophical-anthropological theory about the Homo sacer. Comparing the wolf-man to the “sacred man,” this theory not only does it allow us to understand the liminal juridical essence of the werewolf in medieval society, but it also explains the central role of sovereignty in the “recognition” of the wolf-man, in its reintroduction into the civil context of the court, and therefore in the resolution of “conflicts” and in the re-establishment of a…

La Sicilia negli Orsi di Dino Buzzati e Lorenzo Mattotti

2022

Settore L-FIL-LET/14 - Critica Letteraria E Letterature ComparateSicily in Bears of Dino Buzzati and Lorenzo Mattotti · In Dino Buzzati’s illustrated fairy tale The Famous Invasion of the Bears in Sicily (1945) and its film adaptation by Lorenzo Mattotti (2019) the Sicilian setting is decisive. In both cases Sicily is an island with a large volcano – transfigured into a fantastic setting or rewritten according to certain stereotypes – that the two authors use with different meanings within the ecosystem of their narratives. Only through a comparison between the two works will it be possible to distinguish the representation of the two Sicilies which are narrated within an interval of about seventy years. If one does not consider the story of the Bears merely a children’s fairy tale using simplistic stylistic devices but on the contrary sees it as an opportunity for the author to deal with serious and complex issues such as an ante litteram Ecocritical perspective or questions of inter-group conflicts derived from Subaltern or Migration Studies the images of the two Sicilies can provide altogether new interpretations.

Inside-out Internal and External Limits to Rights: Does it matter?

2019

Literature is rich on whether and how rights are limited by external considerations, such as other rights or particularly important general interests. This article concentrates on what could be a different type of limit of rights: internal limits stemming from the very foundations of a right. Its aim is to understand whether these hypothetically different internal limits actually collapse on the idea of internal limits of coherence theories; or whether they are equivalent, in terms of effects, to external limits to rights.  In order to show the origin of the troubling with internal limits, the article begins with a brief introduction of biocultural rights of indigenous peoples and local com…

2016

The article reconstructs and critically assesses some of the most recurring arguments in legal and political philosophy to the effect that social rights are different in structure from, and necessarily incompatible with, the more familiar civil and political liberties. The author shows that social rights and civil and political liberties have in common more than meets the eye, and so they are different in degree rather than in kind. Moreover, while these rights can certainly happen to conflict one against the other in particular instances, they prove not only to be compatible but even mutually reinforcing as far as their respective axiological foundations are concerned.

2013

Starting from the presentation of the principles underlying the current research and that link it to previous studies —principles which deal with the concept and features of drama historial (historic drama) in Lope de Vega—, the essay focuses on the distinction of two fundamental modes of drama historial: the commemoration of famous historical events on the one hand, and moral conflict analysis, almost always of private nature and exploding in specific historical circumstances, on the other hand. These two major strategies of significance, the one being characteristic of a collective memory, associated with the identity of the nascent nation, and the other one exploring private identity, th…

Between conflicts and commerce: The impact of institutions and wars on Swedish-Portuguese Trade, 1686-1815

2015

This paper is related to a multiyear project aimed at compiling new data on the early modern trade flows between smaller (or weaker) states. It presents a quantitative analysis of the nature and volume of trade between Sweden and Portugal during the period in question, seeking to identify long-run changes in these flows and to determine whether institutional changes and wars fundamentally altered the composition, trends, or volume of trade. First, it appears that trade between Portugal and Sweden hinged on only a few key commodities, most importantly iron from Sweden and salt from Portugal. In particular, we found that Portugal was somewhat more dependent on Swedish iron than Sweden was on …

Narrativa dei Caraibi nel nuovo millennio

2020

The definition "Franco-Caribbean Literature" used by convention from the critique to indicate all the literary production in French of the central region of the American continent is very improper. The Caribbean region includes in fact the islands of Martinique Guadeloupe Haïti and the Guiana. Despite the diversity of ideological movements and historical events that took place in these countries the literary works of the Caribbean writers have fluctuated and continue to oscillate between two tendencies: that of rooting in tradition and that of escape from it. The writers show themselves open to comparison and dialogue with other literary and cultural traditions in order to create a narrative form that corresponds to the many inheritances of those composite populations. Here the cultural syncretism that has been created allows to recognize a common identity in the name of all that the West wanted to extinguish. The common denominator seems to be inverted in the contradictory result of courageous but dangerous encounters of curiosities that can lead to conflicts to exclusions.
