Abstract The molecular and crystal structures of two homologous amino acid derivatives: N-acetyl-α,β-dehydro-butyrine N´,N´-dimethylamide (1) and N-acetyl-DL-butyrine N´,N´-dimethylamide (2), have been determined by X-ray crystallography. Similar solid-state association of both compounds is observed; despite different molecular conformation, they form centrosymmetric dimers linked by the intermolecular N–H…O hydrogen bonds. Abstract The Protic Ionic Liquid (PIL) formed by neutralization of the super-strong base 1,7-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) with the super-strong acid bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)-imide (TFSI), indicated as [DBUH][TFSI], has been investigated. Its chemical physical properties and structural features have been explored using a synergy of experimental and computational tools. Molecular Dynamics-rationalised X-ray diffraction patterns highlight the major role played by hydrogen bonding (HB) in affecting morphology in this PIL. In each of the title compounds, the anion shows evidence of extensive electronic delocalization. A combination of N—H⋯N and X—H⋯N hydrogen bonds links the ions in (I) into a ribbon of alternating centrosymmetric (18) and (26) rings, and those in (II) into simple (7) chains of alternating cations and anion with further cations pendent from the chain.

Ab initio study of the internal rotation potential of p-disilanylbenzene and p-(1,1′,2,2′-tetramethyldisilanyl)benzene

Abstract We present a detailed ab initio study of the geometrical structure and torsional potential of p -disilanylbenzene and its methyl derivative p -(1,1′,2,2′-tetramethyldisilanyl)benzene. The geometries of the different conformers have been fully optimized at the Hartree-Fock 3-21G ∗ and 6-31G ∗ levels. In all cases, the most stable conformation corresponds to the conformer in which the phenylene group lies in a plane perpendicular to the four silicon atoms. The torsional potential curves calculated using the 3-21G ∗ and 6-31G ∗ basis sets show similar features. Host-Guest Complexes of C-Ethyl-2-methylresorcinarene and Aromatic N,N′-Dioxides

The C‐ethyl‐2‐methylresorcinarene (1) forms 1:1 in‐cavity complexes with aromatic N,N′‐dioxides, only if each of the aromatic rings has an N−O group. The structurally different C‐shaped 2,2′‐bipyridine N,N′‐dioxide (2,2′‐BiPyNO) and the linear rod‐shaped 4,4′‐bipyridine N,N′‐dioxide (4,4′‐BiPyNO) both form 1:1 in‐cavity complexes with the host resorcinarene in C4v crown and C2v conformations, respectively. In the solid state, the host–guest interactions between the 1,3‐bis(4‐pyridyl)propane N,N′‐dioxide (BiPyPNO) and the host 1 stabilize the unfavorable anti‐gauche conformation. Effect of a Rigid Sulfonamide Bond on Molecular Folding: A Case Study

A disulfonamide compound with bulky aromatic side chains was prepared, and its properties as a potential building block for foldamers were evaluated. Two different solvate crystal forms of the compound were identified and compared to the structures of an analogous oligoamide and related disulfonamides. The disulfonamide is unfolded in one of the solvates, whereas in the other one, a loosely folded conformer stabilized by an intramolecular hydrogen bond is found. Density functional calculations indicated that the loosely folded conformer is slightly more stable than its unfolded isomer. Molecular orbital study of conformational isomers and rotational barriers of methyl substituted hydroquinone cation radicals

Abstract The torsional potential energy curve of the hydroxyl group of hydroquinone and tetramethyl-hydroquinone cation radicals were explored with various ab initio methods. The minimum and the torsional transition state geometries and energies were computed by using high accuracy density functional methods yielding the rotation barrier height and the energy difference between the cis- and trans-isomers. The obtained minimum energy geometry for the hydroquinone cation radical indicates that the CO bond has shortened when compared to the neutral species. Purification, crystallization and preliminary X-ray studies of sylvaticin, an elicitin-like protein from Pythium sylvaticum.

Sylvaticin belongs to the elicitin family. These 10 kDa oomycetous proteins induce a hypersensitive response in plants, including necrosis and cell death, but subsequently leading to a non-specific systemic acquired resistance (SAR) against other pathogens. Sylvaticin has been crystallized using PEG 2000 MME as a precipitant agent in the presence of nickel chloride. The crystals belong to space group C2, with unit-cell parameters a = 99.29, b = 25.67, c = 67.45 A, beta = 99.66 degrees. Diffraction data were recorded to 2.1 A resolution at a synchrotron-radiation source.
