Compounds of conditionals and iterated conditioning under coherence
2017
We discuss the problem of defining logical operations among conditional events. Differently from many authors, we define the conjunction and disjunction in the setting of conditional random quantities. In probability theory and in probability logic a relevant problem, largely discussed by many authors, is that of defining logical operations among conditional events. In the many works concerning these operations, the conjunction and disjunction have been usually defined as suitable conditional events. In Kaufmann 2009 it has been proposed a theory for the compounds of conditionals which has been framed in the setting of coherence in (Gilio and Sanfilippo , 2013, 2014) In this framework, whic…
On compound and iterated conditionals
2021
We illustrate the notions of compound and iterated conditionals introduced, in recent papers, as suitable conditional random quantities, in the framework of coherence. We motivate our definitions by examining some concrete examples. Our logical operations among conditional events satisfy the basic probabilistic properties valid for unconditional events. We show that some, intuitively acceptable, compound sentences on conditionals can be analyzed in a rigorous way in terms of suitable iterated conditionals. We discuss the Import-Export principle, which is not valid in our approach, by also examining the inference from a material conditional to the associated conditional event. Then, we illus…
Quasi conjunction and p-entailment in nonmonotonic reasoning
2010
We study, in the setting of coherence, the extension of a probability assessment defined on n conditional events to their quasi conjunction. We consider, in particular, two special cases of logical dependencies; moreover, we examine the relationship between the notion of p-entailment of Adams and the inclusion relation of Goodman and Nguyen. We also study the probabilistic semantics of the QAND rule of Dubois and Prade; then, we give a theoretical result on p-entailment.
In the Future Everyone Will Be a Fuzzy Set: Enric Trillas, FST as an Experimental Science and the Relationship with Theory of Concepts
2015
Enrique Trillas Ruiz has had a long association with Italy, and for ten years now has been in the Scientific committee of WILF, the International Workshop on Fuzzy Logic born and breed in our country; it was not until WILF 2009, which our research group organised in Terrasini (Palermo) and in which organising committee I sat, that I become aware of the “complementary soul” of Enric’s work. Up to that point I had stumbled upon his papers on fuzzy operators and logic, mostly the joint works of him and Claudi Alsina, such as [1, 2, 21], but my research interest at the time seemed to me away and far apart from the ensemble of symbols and logical implication: I was trying to use the elements of …
Notes on the use of rhetoric in t.v. advertising
1989
We intend to reflect on the use of Rhetoric in t.v. advertising starting from the survey of several spots given off by T.V.E. Therefore, we fix the structural organization of advertisements. Afterwards we study the rhetoric of spot in the sound and in the picture and, mainly, ¡n the conjunction of both bands; in this sense spots are normally based on a rhetorical figure that involves both bands. Our observations set up an essentially metaphoric basis to the construction of publicity message. We infer that advertising works with connotative signs, where the assembly of picture and sound tracks becomes the significant of metaphoric meaning that is insinuated.
Voice and authorial body in Juana Manso
2021
An improved quantum query algorithm for computing AND Boolean function
2010
We consider the quantum query model for computing Boolean functions. The definition of the function is known, but a black box contains the input X = (x 1 , x 2 , …, x n ). Black box can be accessed by querying x i values. The goal is to develop an algorithm, which would compute the function value for arbitrary input using as few queries to the black box as possible. We present two different quantum query algorithms for computing the basic Boolean function — logical AND of two bits. Both algorithms use only one query to determine the function value. Correct answer probability for the first algorithm is 80%, but for the second algorithm it is 90%. To compute this function with the same probab…
Conjunction, Disjunction and Iterated Conditioning of Conditional Events
2013
Starting from a recent paper by S. Kaufmann, we introduce a notion of conjunction of two conditional events and then we analyze it in the setting of coherence. We give a representation of the conjoined conditional and we show that this new object is a conditional random quantity, whose set of possible values normally contains the probabilities assessed for the two conditional events. We examine some cases of logical dependencies, where the conjunction is a conditional event; moreover, we give the lower and upper bounds on the conjunction. We also examine an apparent paradox concerning stochastic independence which can actually be explained in terms of uncorrelation. We briefly introduce the…
Deep stratosphere-to-troposphere transport (STT) over SE Europe: a complex case study captured by enhanced 7Be…
2005
Abstract. In this study we present a complex case study of a Stratosphere-to-Troposphere Transport (STT) event down to the surface of a low topography region in Northern Greece, during the second fortnight of March 2000. During this event our surface station at Livadi (23°15 E/40°32 N, 850 m a.s.l.), was influenced by very different synoptic systems developing over Eastern Europe, N. America and the N. Atlantic, the last one evolving to a cut-off low over France/Spain. This is the first study, to our knowledge, that presents a down to the surface STT event in the eastern Mediterranean. The intrusion is primarily captured with the use of the cosmogenic radionuclide 7Be, which increased to 9.…

Previewing distracters enhances the efficiency of visual search. Watson and Humphreys (1997) proposed that the preview benefit rests on visual marking, a mechanism which actively encodes distracter locations at preview and inhibits them afterwards at search. As Watson and Humphreys did, we used a letter-color search task to study constraints of visual marking in conjunction search and near-efficient single-feature search with single-colored and homogeneous distracter letters. Search performance was measured for fixed target and distracter features (block design) and for randomly changed features across trials (random design). In single-feature search there was a full preview benefit for bot…
