In this paper we report the inability of four group I introns in the gene encoding subunit I of cytochrome c oxidase (cox1) and the group II intron in the apocytochrome b gene (cob) to splice autocatalytically. Furthermore we present the characterization of the first cox1 intron in the mutator strain anar-14 and the construction and characterization of strains with intronless mitochondrial genomes. We provide evidence that removal of introns at the DNA level (termed DNA splicing) is dependent on an active RNA maturase. Finally we demonstrate that the absence of introns does not abolish homologous mitochondrial recombination.

A paramount task in RNA interference research is to decipher the complex biology of cellular effectors, exemplified in humans by four pleiotropic Argonaute proteins (Ago1-Ago4). Here, we exploited DNA family shuffling, a molecular evolution technology, to generate chimeric Ago protein libraries for dissection of intricate phenotypes independently of prior structural knowledge. Through shuffling of human Ago2 and Ago3, we discovered two N-terminal motifs that govern RNA cleavage in concert with the PIWI domain. Antioxidant enzymes are known to protect living organisms against the oxidative stress risk, also induced by metals. In the present study, we describe the purification and molecular characterization of two Cu,Zn superoxide dismutases (SODs), referred to as Ci-SODa and Ci-SODb, from Ciona intestinalis, a basal chordate widely distributed in temperate shallow seawater. AbstractLeuO is a pleiotropic LysR-type transcriptional regulator (LTTR) and co-regulator of the abundant nucleoid-associated repressor protein H-NS in Gammaproteobacteria. As other LTTRs, LeuO is a tetramer that is formed by dimerization of the N-terminal DNA-binding domain (DBD) and C-terminal effector-binding domain (EBD). To characterize the Escherichia coli LeuO protein, we screened for LeuO mutants that activate the cas (CRISPR-associated/Cascade) promoter more effectively than wild-type LeuO. Consensus for networks with unknown but bounded disturbances

We consider stationary consensus protocols for networks of dynamic agents. The measure of the neighbors' states is affected by unknown but bounded disturbances. Here the main contribution is the formulation and solution of what we call the $\epsilon$-consensus problem, where the states are required to converge in a target set of radius $\epsilon$ asymptotically or in finite time. We introduce as a solution a dead-zone policy that we denote as the lazy rule.

International audience; The Global Financial Crisis has reshuffled the cards for central banks throughout the world. In the wake of the biggest crisis since the Great Depression, this volume traces the evolution of modern central banking over the last fifty years. It takes in the inflationary chaos of the 1970s and the monetarist experiments of the 1980s, eventually leading to the New Monetary Consensus, which took shape in the 1990s and prevailed until 2007. The book then goes on to review the limitations placed on monetary policy in the aftermath of the global meltdown, arguing that the financial crisis has shaken the new monetary consensus.
