The vegetation of temporary ponds of Sardinia

2009

The Mediterranean temporary ponds are considered priority habitat in the Directive 92/43/EEC (habitat n. 3170*) and detailed information on their floristic composition and susceptibility to invasive species seems a central issue for their preservation, because the development and maintenance of seasonal vegetation is merely the resultant of the development and maintenance of its component individuals. Sardinia presents fairly large extensions of land where such habitats are still well represented, thought not investigated in depth. Basing on literature and unpublished data, a survey on the current phytosociological knowledge of the temporary ponds of Sardinia is presented. Our field studies…

Expansion of rDNA and pericentromere satellite repeats in the genomes of bank voles Myodes glareolus exposed to environmental radionuclides

2021

Abstract Altered copy number of certain highly repetitive regions of the genome, such as satellite DNA within heterochromatin and ribosomal RNA loci (rDNA), is hypothesized to help safeguard the genome against damage derived from external stressors. We quantified copy number of the 18S rDNA and a pericentromeric satellite DNA (Msat‐160) in bank voles (Myodes glareolus) inhabiting the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone (CEZ), an area that is contaminated by radionuclides and where organisms are exposed to elevated levels of ionizing radiation. We found a significant increase in 18S rDNA and Msat‐160 content in the genomes of bank voles from contaminated locations within the CEZ compared with animals f…

Plant Extracts as Antimicrobial Agents in Sustainable Conservation of Erythrina caffra (Fabaceae) Historical Trees

2023

Microbial colonization plays a relevant role in the biodegradation and biodeterioration of cultural and natural heritage, representing a revealing problem in conservation strategy. In this study, the essential oil (EO) and hydro-alcoholic extract (HAE) of Origanum vulgare L. (Lamiaceae), an aromatic perennial plant, representative of the Mediterranean basin, growing spontaneously and cultivated all over the world, were analysed. Natural products, such as essential oil and hydroalcoholic extract, have strong antiseptic and antimicrobial properties and are ad hoc applied for the sustainable conservation of Erithryna caffra (Fabaceae). The main taxa revealed in the damaging of these arboreal h…

On site archaeological museums: types of protection

2011

The decision to preserve, in their original context, even the most fragile artefacts, such as floor and wall coverings and to exhibit the delicate stratigraphic or clay manufactures, has favoured the spread of archaeological museums in situ, by interventions aimed at the preservation of archaeological remains. Archaeological museums represent a particular typology capable of relating history through its ruins. Therefore, it is not a museum having typological and functional characteristics that answer to codified museum-graphical and display rules . The arrangement and the public opening of the archaeological sites in recent years have been the object of discussions, debates and interdiscipl…

Open air ruins: protection systems for Lucentum Rovine all’aria aperta: sistemi di protezione per Lucentum

2013

A novel scientific approach to the conservation of archaeological copper alloys artefacts

2007

A novel research approach focused on innovative materials and methods to assure the long-term stability of bronze archaeological artefacts during exhibition and storage is reported. The work deals with the application of advanced analytical techniques and the development, characterisation and testing of materials and procedures for the conservation, protection and restoration of ancient Cu-based alloy artefacts. Our first aim was the selection of Cu-based alloy artefacts from different archaeological sites in Southern Italy with respect of chemical composition, metallurgical features and corrosion products. This step allowed the identification of the ancient alloys, the study of natural pat…

Fungal biodiversity and in situ conservation in Italy

2011

A remarkable increase in knowledge of fungal biodiversity in Italy has occurred in the last five years. The authors report up-to-date numbers of fungi (Basidiomycota and Ascomycota) by regions together with distributional and ecological data on hypogeous fungi. Specific case studies such as alpine fungi, orchid mycorrhizas symbionts, invasive species, and the use of macrofungi as food by red squirrels are analyzed. In situ conservation strategies carried out on target species and/or taxonomic groups are also indicated.

Preventive Conservation: a Key Method to Ensure Cultural Heritage’s Authenticity and Integrity in Preservation Process

2012

This article studies the role of preventive conservation in cultural heritage preservation. It shows through cultural heritage theory and conservation professions development process how important part preventive conservation has had and still has in cultural heritage preservation and damage prevention. Preventive conservation is a multidisciplinary orientation that uses indirect measures and actions to avoid or to minimize future deterioration or loss of cultural heritage. Conservation professionals should recognize its importance as the most effective method in promoting the long-term preservation of cultural heritage. Therefore, preventive conservation should be the basic theoretical per…
