Efficiency and Stability of a Family of Iterative Schemes for Solving Nonlinear Equations

2019

In this paper, we construct a family of iterative methods with memory from one without memory, analyzing their convergence and stability. The main aim of this manuscript yields in the advantage that the use of real multidimensional dynamics gives us to decide among the different classes designed and, afterwards, to select its most stable members. Some numerical tests confirm the theoretical results.

Taxas de substituições das Annonaceas: uma perspectiva do modelo códon

2014

The Annonaceae includes cultivated species of economic interest and represents an important source of information for better understanding the evolution of tropical rainforests. In phylogenetic analyses of DNA sequence data that are used to address evolutionary questions, it is imperative to use appropriate statistical models. Annonaceae are cases in point: Two sister clades, the subfamilies Annonoideae and Malmeoideae, contain the majority of Annonaceae species diversity. The Annonoideae generally show a greater degree of sequence divergence compared to the Malmeoideae, resulting in stark differences in branch lengths in phylogenetic trees. Uncertainty in how to interpret and analyse these…

Meaning Extraction from Strappare Causatives in Italian

2021

The work targets a little-known causative construction of Italian whose causative verb is strappare ‘tear/extort/snatch’ (e.g. Ada strappò la confessione a Piero ‘Ada made Piero confess against his will’). In the active voice of this clause type, the subject, licensed by strappare, is invariably associated with the semantic role ‘Causer’ (as fare does in fare causatives, see [1]), whilst the post-verbal NP (e.g. confessione ‘confession’) is best analyzed as the predicate licensing the remaining syntactic function/s and the related semantic role/s. The NooJ grammar which the authors propose automatically extracts the meaning of strappare causatives by means of a novel type of semantic role. …

Revising midlatitude summer temperatures back to A.D. 600 based on a wood density network

2015

Annually resolved and millennium-long reconstructions of large-scale temperature variability are primarily composed of tree ring width (TRW) chronologies. Changes in ring width, however, have recently been shown to bias the ratio between low- and high-frequency signals. To overcome limitations in capturing the full spectrum of past temperature variability, we present a network of 15 maximum latewood density (MXD) chronologies distributed across the Northern Hemisphere extratropics. Independent subsets of continental-scale records consistently reveal high MXD before 1580 and after 1910, with below average values between these periods. Reconstructed extratropical summer temperatures reflect n…

Compatibility, effectiveness and susceptibility to degradation of alkoxysilane-based consolidation treatments on a carbonate stone

2021

Abstract Alkoxysilane-based consolidation treatment are commonly employed in restoration and conservation works of Cultural Heritage buildings. However, their poor affinity to carbonate stones is well-known. In this paper, we evaluate three consolidant treatments (two of them modified to incorporate hydrophobic or photocatalytic properties), formulated to circumvent this drawback and their cracking during drying, through a surfactant-assisted synthesis. The consolidants were applied on Noto stone, a biocalcarenite (~95% CaCO3 ) employed in numerous Cultural Heritage buildings of Southern Italy. A comprehensive validation of the three consolidants, compared to a commercial TEOS based consoli…

Low-cost method for obtaining medical rapid prototyping using desktop 3d printing : a novel technique for mandibular reconstruction planning

2017

Background Three-dimensional (3D) printing is relatively a new technology with clinical applications, which enable us to create rapid accurate prototype of the selected anatomic region, making it possible to plan complex surgery and pre-bend hardware for individual surgical cases. This study aimed to express our experience with the use of medical rapid prototype (MRP) of the maxillofacial region created by desktop 3D printer and its application in maxillofacial reconstructive surgeries. Material and methods Three patients with benign mandible tumors were included in this study after obtaining informed consent. All patient's maxillofacial CT scan data was processed by segmentation and isolat…

Spatial Reconstruction Algorithm of DT Layer in Cryogenic Targets Using Optical Techniques

2007

The measurements of the solid DT layer, in terms of thickness and roughness, in the LMJ geometry (i.e. in a hohlraum) are not trivial. The DT layer measurements will be done using a Matsukov-Cassegrain telescope placed 39 cm away from the target. This telescope will be used to acquire shadowgraphy images on equators, and interferometric measurements on pole areas using optical coherence tomography (OCT). Optical coherence tomography allows determining the DT layer thickness on a few points, in the polar regions of the target. By scanning around the poles, several points can be acquired in order to calculate the roughness and the local shape of the DT layer at the pole. Both techniques were …

Measurement of W-pair production in $e^+ e^-$ collisions at 189 GeV

2000

The production of W-pairs is analysed in a data sample collected by ALEPH at a mean centre-of-mass energy of 188.6 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 174.2 pb^-1. Cross sections are given for different topologies of W decays into leptons or hadrons. Combining all final states and assuming Standard Model branching fractions, the total W-pair cross section is measured to be 15.71 +- 0.34 (stat) +- 0.18 (syst) pb. Using also the W-pair data samples collected by ALEPH at lower centre-of-mass energies, the decay branching fraction of the W boson into hadrons is measured to be BR (W > hadrons) = 66.97 +- 0.65 (stat) +- 0.32 (syst) %, allowing a determination of the CKM matrix el…
