Landscape Architecture and the Green Deal Dare: Five Successful Experiences in Urban Open Spaces
2022
The present work focuses on European cities’ environments and open spaces, aiming to demonstrate how, through landscape architecture, it is possible to respond effectively to many of the ecological and social hardships that the Green Deal aspires to alleviate. It was signed in 2019 by all of the member countries of the Union, seeks to reverse the climate change trend by establishing a series of goals for improving environmental and economic quality for 2030 and 2050 and also aims to enact social justice in rural areas and in the urban environment. Landscape architecture, which is the art of combining the physical and immaterial elements in cities’ open spaces, is taken in this w…
Paesaggio, piano, progetto: problemi lessicali e altro
2012
The notion of landscape and the techniques for landscape design must necessarily be based on two principal regulatory provisions, the European Landscape Convention and in Italy the law on cultural heritage and landscape. Consideration must also be given to what is meant by the term ‘landscape' in normal and specialist parlance and to the nature of the training of landscape architects, because it is from all this that the ambiguities and misunderstandings that surround the notion of landscape originate. Consideration must also be given to the relations between planning and real and local transformations, because the contents and procedures for the formulation of designs depend on them. Lands…
From the “Sacred Theatres” of Andrea Pozzo to the International Truncated Calotte: History and Representation of the Immacolatella Church’s Tribune i…
2022
The contribution, divided between history and representation, aims to analyse the design genesis and the sources used by the architect Giovanni Amico for the modernization of the Immacolatella church’s tribune in Trapani (since 1732). The church is devoid of studies and surveys with digital instrumentation but its unique compositional characteristics, which exploit the theme of the manipulation of space and light for scenographic and liturgical purposes, require in-depth analysis. The solution applied to the church tribune combines different compositional themes linked to the Roman design world and in particular by Andrea Pozzo in relation to the “sacred theatres” produced for the Jesuits a…
Formazione e trasformazione di un'immagine urbana. Ricostruzioni architettoniche tra l'asse della via Notarbartolo e il secondo tronco della via Libe…
2022
The contribution presented here is part of a work-in-progress project, which has as its focus the “extra-moenia” urban transformations suffered by the city of Palermo after World War II, with the aim of cataloging, reconstructing and restoring the remarkable heritage -lost in the years of the economic boom and building speculation- in three-dimensional virtual images. The analysis is part of the urban context affected by the extension of via Libertà starting from the intersection with via Notarbartolo, the transversal directional axis conceived in the Giarrusso Plan of 1887 as a connection to the Shipyards and built starting from the subdivisions of Villa Carini in the years 1891-1902. This…
La perduta Chiesa dell'Annunziata presso Porta san Giorgio a Palermo: ipotesi e ricostruzioni virtuali
2020
The Annunziata church was destroyed by the bombings of the Allies on May 9 1943 on the city of Palermo. However, important evidence remains of the church, built at the end of the 16th century and located near the San Giorgio gate: a 1832 drawing by Pierre-Joseph Garrez, preserved in Paris, at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, the survey of the architect Nino Pollaci of the early twentieth century, a series of historical photos, the surviving architectural fragments such as the capitals and the painted wooden coffered ceiling, preserved in various Palermitan museums, and above all the bell tower, still the only trace on the site of the now disappeared church of the Annunziata. T…
The ‘false vaults’ in the architecture of Sicily
2015
Between the end of the 17th century and the first decades of the 18th, Sicily was struck by several violent earthquakes. The total and partial collapse of monumental buildings produced a global debate involving various aspects of construction practice. One of the central topics of discussion was the construction of domes and large vaulted structures. Some architects studied the possibility of using so-called ‘false vaults’, a kind of lightweight structure created with a wooden frame, reed mats, and plaster. The technique was probably known by the 16th century and was used in a few major monuments, such as the dome of the Palermo Cathedral, in the mid-17th century. It was only after the Eart…
2021
The contribution presents and examines, through documentary readings, anti-seismic strategies and practices born with experience and with the relationship with history, selected and consolidated over time, applied in Sicilian construction from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century by architects and master builders after the great earthquakes that hit the island in the modern age.
Note sulla ricostruzione del centro storico di Palermo. Idee e proposte dai piani.
2011
Palermo was a town still ravaged by war - as Argan reported and he stated that: >. In fact the outcome in terms of damages caused by the war was huge, as entire monuments and considerable urban environments had disappeared into large cavities. In particular, the Teatro Marittimo area, between the Foro Italico and the Cala, became one of the largest sites of ruins created by the war in Italy. With the reconstruction plan approved in 1947 certain indiscriminately destructive principles reappeared in planning policies, such as the implicit request for a new parallel road upstream the 17th century Street called via Maqueda the third road crossing the old town centre, which had been already draw…
