Factors contributing to verbal self-disclosure
2007
The phenomenon of self-disclosure has been actively studied in several sub-discliplines of psychology from the 1970s on, and neighbouring disciplines, such as social and communication sciences, have enriched the psychological understanding of the topic. The psychological literature on self-disclosure, which is viewed, sometimes as a trait-like construct, varying in degree from one person to another, and sometimes as an interpersonal process which occurs when individuals interact with each other, has addressed, in particular, the issues of reciprocity effect, sex differences, self-disclosure in intimate vs. non-intimate relationships, the benefits to be derived from disclosing, and the emoti…
Improving the Seismic Response of Tall Buildings: From Diagrid to Megastructures and Mega-Subcontrol Systems
2022
Background: Diagrid structures, widely used for the tall buildings of the third millennium, are characterized by a very effective behaviour in the elastic field due to the grid triangulation. In particular, under horizontal actions, axial forces and deformations mainly arise in the structural members of the diagrid, thus resulting in the reduction of the shear lag effect and racking deformations. The response to incremental horizontal actions beyond the plastic threshold, however, shows a poor plastic redistribution capacity, with consequent low values of global ductility, in spite of a significant design overstrength. Objective: In this paper, it is proposed to exploit the high elastic ef…
Structural characterization of Nigerian coals by X-ray diffraction, Raman and FTIR spectroscopy
2010
Abstract The structural parameters of six Nigerian coals were determined by X-ray diffraction, Raman and FTIR spectroscopy. This study reveals that the coals contain crystalline carbon of turbostratic structure with some amount of highly disordered amorphous carbon. The average lateral sizes ( L a ), stacking heights ( L c ) and interlayer spacing ( d 002 ) of the crystallite structures calculated from the X-ray intensities range from 16.47 to 25.70, 8.12 to 13.25 and 3.48 to 3.58 A, respectively. The L a values derived from the Raman spectra analyses using the classical linear relationship between 1/ L a and the D/G band ratio are higher (27.53–34.67 A) than values obtained from X-ray diff…
RF magnetron-sputtered coatings deposited from biphasic calcium phosphate targets for biomedical implant applications
2017
Bioactive calcium phosphate coatings were deposited by radio-frequency magnetron sputtering from biphasic targets of hydroxyapatite and tricalcium phosphate, sintered at different mass % ratios. According to Raman scattering and X-ray diffraction data, the deposited hydroxyapatite coatings have a disordered structure. High-temperature treatment of the coatings in air leads to a transformation of the quasi-amorphous structure into a crystalline one. A correlation has been observed between the increase in the Ca content in the coatings and a subsequent decrease in Ca in the biphasic targets after a series of deposition processes. It was proposed that the addition of tricalcium phosphate to th…
Iron Doped-ZrSiO4: Structural, Microstructural and Vibrational Characterization
2015
Fex-ZrSiO4 is known for the applications in the ceramic industry such as ceramic pigment. In this article, we focus our attention to the structural, microstructural and vibrational changes of Fex-ZrSiO4 from free-mineralizer precursors, treated at different temperatures in the range of 1100-1600 °C. The refinements of X-ray diffraction patterns show that Fe3+ cations were distributed into tetrahedral sites replacing Si4+. The evolution of the shape distribution analyzed by transmission electron microscopy, reveal a polyhedral morphology at 1100 °C during 3h. In comparison, well-rounded and homogeneous particle size was determined in the sample heated at 1600 °C during 24 h. On the other han…
Experimental and theoretical study of the energetic, morphological, and photoluminescence properties of CaZrO3:Eu3+
2018
In this study, we present a combined experimental and theoretical study of the geometry, electronic structure, morphology, and photoluminescence properties of CaZrO3:Eu3+ materials. The polymeric precursor method was employed to synthesize CaZrO3:Eu3+ crystals, while density functional theory calculations were performed to determine the geometrical and electronic properties of CaZrO3:Eu3+ in its ground and excited electronic states (singlet and triplet). The results were combined with X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements to elucidate the local structural changes induced by the introduction of Eu3+ in the crystal lattice. This process results in the formation of intermediate levels in the ba…
New zeolite-like RUB-5 and its related hydrous layer silicate RUB-6 structurally characterized by electron microscopy.
2020
RUB-5 and its related hydrous layer silicate RUB-6 were synthesized in the 1990s, but so far their structures have remained unknown due to their low crystallinity and disorder. The combination of 3D electron diffraction, X-ray powder diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, structural modelling and diffraction simulations has enabled a comprehensive description of these two nanomaterials, revealng a new framework topology and a unique silica polymorph.
Water vapor sensors based on the swelling of relief gelatin gratings
2015
We report on a novel device to measure relative humidity. The sensor is based on surface diffraction gratings made of gelatin. This material swells and shrinks according to the content of water vapor in air. By sending a light beam to the grating, diffracted orders appear. Due to the gelatin swelling or shrinking, first order intensity changes according to the relative humidity. Calibration curves relating intensity versus relative humidity have been found. The fabrication process of diffraction gratings and the testing of the prototype sensing devices are described.
Experimental and theoretical study to explain the morphology of CaMoO4 crystals
2018
Abstract CaMoO 4 crystals were prepared by a controlled co-precipitation method and processed in a domestic microwave-assisted hydrothermal system with two different surfactants (ethyl 4-dimethylaminobenzoate and 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic dianhydride). The corresponding structures were characterized by X-ray diffraction and Rietveld refinement techniques, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet–visible absorption spectroscopy, and photoluminescence measurements. Field emission scanning electron microscopy was used to investigate the morphology of the as-synthesized aggregates. The structure, the surface stability of the (001), (112), (100), (110), (101), and (111) surfaces…
