Compression Methods for Microclimate Data Based on Linear Approximation of Sensor Data
2019
Edge computing is currently one of the main research topics in the field of Internet of Things. Edge computing requires lightweight and computationally simple algorithms for sensor data analytics. Sensing edge devices are often battery powered and have a wireless connection. In designing edge devices the energy efficiency needs to be taken into account. Pre-processing the data locally in the edge device reduces the amount of data and thus decreases the energy consumption of wireless data transmission. Sensor data compression algorithms presented in this paper are mainly based on data linearity. Microclimate data is near linear in short time window and thus simple linear approximation based …
Energy management strategy to reduce pollutant emissions during the catalyst light-off of parallel hybrid vehicles
2020
Abstract The transportation sector is a major contributor to both air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Hybrid electric vehicles can reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by optimizing the energy management of the powertrain. The purpose of this study is to examine the trade-off between regulated pollutant emissions and hybrid powertrain efficiency. The thermal dynamics of the three-way catalyst are taken into account in order to optimize the light-off. Experimental campaigns are conducted on a spark-ignition engine to introduce simplified models for emissions, exhaust gas temperature, catalyst heat transfers and efficiency. These models are used to determine the optimal distribut…
Prosthetic design and prototype development
2020
Abstract In recent years, there has been worldwide interest in improvement of the mobility of people with lower-limb amputations. Despite significant development of new technologies over the last decade, commercial below-knee and above-knee prostheses are still energetically passive devices. However, many locomotive functions, like walking up stairs and slopes, need significant power in the knee and ankle joints. The additional power for carrying out these previously mentioned activities needs to be achieved by means of external energy sources, which should be integral prosthetic components. This chapter presents preliminary investigations and development towards an active robotic prosthesi…
Paradoxical social representations of linky smart meters and privacy paradox
2021
Consumer participation to electricity consumption reduction (ECR) has become a major challenge in a context of Energy Transition. The Linky french Smart Meter, which use contributes to ECR, is confronted to many controversies reflecting the social legitimation at stake which underlies its evaluation. This article proposes to study privacy paradox regarding Linky Smart Meter use, mobilizing the conceptual background of consumer psychological empowerment. In that aim, a social representation analysis was conducted involving 271 respondents. Results highlight, on one hand, a privacy paradox involving 3 out of the 4 dimensions of psychological empowerment, and on another hand, the presence of m…
Alcohol consumption and hormonal alterations related to muscle hypertrophy: a review
2014
Detrimental effects of acute and chronic alcohol (ethanol) consumption on human physiology are well documented in the literature. These adversely influence neural, metabolic, cardiovascular, and thermoregulatory functions. However, the side effects of ethanol consumption on hormonal fluctuations and subsequent related skeletal muscle alterations have received less attention and as such are not entirely understood. The focus of this review is to identify the side effects of ethanol consumption on the major hormones related to muscle metabolism and clarify how the hormonal profiles are altered by such consumption.
Energy use–GDP deterministic cointegration: progress towards EU-15 Kyoto targets
2015
This article examines whether the energy consumption–GDP relationship is in long-term equilibrium for EU-15 countries. Unlike many previous works, we apply a nonlinear unit root test introduced by Kapetanios et al. (2003a) and extended by Chong et al. (2008) that identifies not only deterministic cointegration, but also the stronger concept of stochastic cointegration. The results yield a clear pattern: Austria, Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain must achieve greater emissions reductions between 2009 and 2012 to reach their respective Kyoto targets.
Interfuel substitutions in the Great Britain's industry in the 1987-1993 period : a translog approach
1996
According to the Department of Trade and Industry (1994), the British consumption of fuel for manufacturing industry, over the period 1973-1993, may be characterized by, firstly, a substitution of oil by gas, and secondly, an increase of energy efficiency. This study attempts to tackle both phenomena by using an econometric approach, based upon translog interfuel substitution models. To do so, the « classic » translog model ought to be enhanced in order to capture the prospect of (1) a non-homothetic feature of the manufacturing production process, (2) energy efficiency -via the implementation of an embodied technical change specification, and (3) short run and long run fuel consumption evo…
Packet Aggregation in TelosB WSNs: Design, Implementation and Experiments
2016
Master's thesis in Information- and communication technology IKT590 - University of Agder 2016 WSN is an extensive field of research and a core technology which is adopted for monitoring and data assembling, used in various applications. Traditionally in a WSN, communication is performed in the fashion of single packet per transmission which produces high energy consumption and longer delay. Therefore, we introduce a novel approach by designing a system which applies packet aggregation in TelosB sensor motes using Contiki platform. In this approach, we assemble multiple packets together and send them in an aggregated frame towards the sink which can reduce the number of transmissions, energ…
Analysis of Energy Consumption Performance towards Optimal Radioplanning of Wireless Sensor Networks in Heterogeneous Indoor Environments
2014
In this paper the impact of complex indoor environment in the deployment and energy consumption of a wireless sensor network infrastructure is analyzed. The variable nature of the radio channel is analyzed by means of deterministic in-house 3D ray launching simulation of an indoor scenario, in which wireless sensors, based on an in-house CyFi implementation, typically used for environmental monitoring, are located. Received signal power and current consumption measurement results of the in-house designed wireless motes have been obtained, stating that adequate consideration of the network topology and morphology lead to optimal performance and power consumption reduction. The use of radiopl…
