Psychological Contract Violation or Basic Need Frustration? Psychological Mechanisms Behind the Effects of Workplace Bullying
2021
Workplace bullying is a phenomenon that can have serious detrimental effects on health, work-related attitudes, and the behavior of the target. Particularly, workplace bullying exposure has been linked to lower level of general well-being, job satisfaction, vigor, and performance and higher level of burnout, workplace deviance, and turnover intentions. However, the psychological mechanisms behind these relations are still not well-understood. Drawing on psychological contract and self-determination theory (SDT), we hypothesized that perceptions of contract violation and the frustration of basic needs mediate the relationship between workplace bullying exposure and well-being, attitudinal, a…
“Nice to get to know you”
2020
Virtual exchange comprises online collaborative activities in facilitated, educational contexts across borders. This paper offers a multimodal approach to the study of social presence in students’ asynchronous online discourse in the context of virtual exchange. It draws on the Community of Inquiry model of online learning (Garrison 2017) and interprets social presence as the dynamic discursive process of social interaction and self-presentation. The data consists of screenshots collected in a closed Facebook group during the first assignment of a Czech-Finnish virtual exchange project in 2017. The study aims to explore how the method of multimodal discourse analysis can be used to describe…
Puhekaverina botti
2020
Keski…
Affordances in Human-Chatbot Interaction: A Review of the Literature
2021
The present study advances our understanding of human-AI interactions, by identifying and analyzing chatbot affordances in prior research. The results of this review consolidate research findings on chatbots’ affordances, which must be taken into consideration when chatbot-based services are designed and deployed. Specifically, the review of state-of-the-art literature led to the identification of nine high level affordances: Human Like Conversing, Assistance Provision, Facilitation, Distilling Information, Enriching Information, Context Identification, Personalization, Fostering Familiarity and Ensuring Privacy. Our contribution is twofold. First, we map the chatbot affordances identified …
Combined People Position and Compass Detection for Context-aware Service Provision
2006
A novel technique is discussed for people identification and position sensing in augmented reality by the use of two cooperating technologies. People are provided with RFID tags for localization and context definition, and then visually investigated for identity checking and compass detection. The two technologies are discussed within an implementation of a case study dealing with context aware service provision for students in a campus.
Presenting the Past: A Framework for Facilitating the Externalization and Articulation of User Activities in Desktop Environment
2006
Work processes are conducted in various contexts and they involve different tasks, interruptions, activities and actions. In all of these, tacit knowledge plays a part. Some part of that tacit knowledge can be externalized and articulated by continuously monitoring the users activities. Because the desktop environment is an integral part of almost any office work context, we chart the demands the unstructured and discontinuous nature of work puts on the management of desktop working context. We discuss possibilities to augment the users awareness of his/her desktop working environment by providing a context-aware application that can act as a map-like resource for the users past activiti…
Creating context as you go
2009
In this paper, we discuss how a short-range wireless communication scheme called Mobile Encounter Network (MEN) can provide additional value for both the consumer and the service/product provider (the company). When used as an information search system on the market environment, a MEN-based system allows services and products being promoted at the location they are available. From the customer's point of view, MEN may provide a "digitally augmented vision", an enhanced view to the current environment. Combined with a set of filtering and search rules this may provide a self-manageable context combining the user's own personal environment and preferences to the services and features availabl…
Context-aware summary generation for Web pages
2009
General purpose search engines provide users with lists of retrieved documents in response to their queries. The common structure of list elements includes the title of a document, its URL, and small snippet from the text. Snippets are evidence of occurrences of query's keywords in the document. The length of each snippet is just a couple of lines. They cannot play a role of summaries of retrieved documents: In many cases, they are not indicative and users cannot judge on the relevancy of documents. In our approach we use ontology as context description and that ontology will be used to describe user's main interest with respect to wanted summary and help to select weighting of key words an…
Search Interfaces and Learning about Controversial Topics
2019
Search engine results pages (SERPs) are a frequent gateway to Internet content. Prior research has extensively documented strong effects of SERPs (e.g. rank order or the spatial distribution of the results) on users' attention to and selection of particular Web pages [1,2]. In the context of Web search, a common user behavior is the 'top link' or 'Google trust' heuristic, that is, the inspection and selection of only the first few search results presented by the search engine, without evaluating all other search results available. This heuristic behavior allows users to find information in an efficient way, as search engines tend to provide relevant documents on top of the list, especially …
LocalRec 2019 workshop report: The Third ACM SIGSPATIAL Workshop on Location-Based Recommendations, Geosocial Networks and Geoadvertising
2020
The amount of publicly available geo-referenced data has seen a dramatic explosion over the past few years. Many user activities generate data that are annotated with location and contextual information. Furthermore, it has become easier to collect and combine rich and diverse location information. In the context of geoadvertising, the use of geosocial data for targeted marketing is receiving significant attention from a wide spectrum of companies and organizations. With the advent of smartphones and online social networks, a multi-billion dollar industry that utilizes geosocial data for advertising and marketing has emerged. Geotagged social-media posts, GPS traces, data from cellular ante…
