Collapsibility and Collapsing Multidimensional Contingency Tables—Perspectives and Implications

Collapsing multidimensional contingency tables is a necessary procedure in all kinds of research. Since collapsibility is subject to severe conditions, collapsing is often not admissible without incurring severe interpretative errors. After having discussed the main contributions to the statistical specification of the concept, we shall point out the logical conditions for collapsing multidimensional contingency tables.

Sample-size restrictions limit the contingency table approaches based on asymptotic distributions, such as the Mantel-Haenszel (MH) procedure, for detecting differential item functioning (DIF) in many practical applications. Within this framework, the present study investigated the power and Type I error performance of empirical and inferential criteria for DIF detection in small samples. Testing the group polarization hypothesis by using logit models

This paper focuses on methodological aspects of group polarization research and has two well-defined parts. The first part presents a methodological overview of group polarization research together with an examination of the inadequacy, under certain circumstances, of the traditional parametric approach usually used to test this phenomenon based on pre-test/post-test means comparison across groups. It is shown that this approach will produce masks effects when groups are heterogeneous with regard to the observed change from pre-test to post-test. The Pearson’s chi-square test represents a nonparametric test more used in Biomedicine and Social Sciences, but it introduces an error for 2 x 2 contingency tables, when a discrete probability distribution is approximated with a continuous distribution. A fruitful dialogue between metaphysics, phenomenology and morphology can be of help to investigate the ontological question of form, giving us the possibility to investigate the question of form and its epistemological significance providing a revision of that eidetic approach which instead is in danger of losing the sense of the continuous plastic morphogenesis of living beings.
