The archeological site of the Latomia del Paradiso (Syracuse) is endangered by severe instability phenomena due to the shape of walls and underground excava-tion related with the poor mechanical characteristics of the weathered and wet rock. On the histori. level, the following remarks are intended to contribute to a better understanding of the missing reception of the more advanced parts of Luitzen E. J. Brouwer’s intuitionistic mathematics. More precisely, I want to draw attention to a crucial technical difficulty in Brouwer’s treatment of the basic theorems of intuitionistic analysis. Bounded Palais–Smale sequences for non-differentiable functions

The existence of bounded Palais-Smale sequences (briefly BPS) for functionals depending on a parameter belonging to a real interval and which are the sum of a locally Lipschitz continuous term and of a convex, proper, lower semicontinuous function, is obtained when the parameter runs in a full measure subset of the given interval. Specifically, for this class of non-smooth functions, we obtain BPS related to mountain pass and to global infima levels. This is done by developing a unifying approach, which applies to both cases and relies on a suitable deformation lemma. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

One-dimensional flexible objects are abundant in physics, from polymers to vortex lines to defect lines and many more. These objects structure their environment and it is natural to assume that the influence these objects exert on their environment depends on the distance from the line-object. But how should this be defined? We argue here that there is an intrinsic length scale along the undulating line that is a measure of its "stiffness" (i.e., orientational persistence), which yields a natural way of defining the variation of physical properties normal to the undulating line. Image compression based on a multi-directional map-dependent algorithm

Abstract This work is devoted to the construction of a new multi-directional edge-adapted compression algorithm for images. It is based on a multi-scale transform that is performed in two steps: a detection step producing a map of edges and a prediction/multi-resolution step which takes into account the information given by the map. A short analysis of the multi-scale transform is performed and an estimate of the error associated to the largest coefficients for a piecewise regular function with Lipschitz edges is provided. Comparisons between this map-dependent algorithm and different classical algorithms are given.
Low-risk isn’t no-risk: Perinatal treatments and the health of low-income newborns

We investigate the effects of perinatal medical treatments on low-income newborns who are classified as low-risk. A policy rule in The Netherlands states that low-risk deliveries before week 37 should be supervised by physicians and later deliveries only by midwives with no physician present. This creates large discontinuities in the probability of receiving medical interventions only physicians are allowed to perform. Using a regression discontinuity design, we find that babies born slightly before the week-37 cutoff are significantly less likely to die than babies born slightly later. The present note reviews some aspects of the mean field limit for Vlasov type equations with Lipschitz continuous interaction kernel. We discuss in particular the connection between the approach involving the N-particle empirical measure and the formulation based on the BBGKY hierarchy. This leads to a more direct proof of the quantitative estimates on the propagation of chaos obtained on a more general class of interacting systems in [S.Mischler, C. Mouhot, B. Wennberg, arXiv:1101.4727]. We aimed to construct the continuum of HIV care (CoC) in 2016 in 11 European Union (EU) countries, overall and by key population and sex.
