Accessibility of Norwegian Municipalities Websites: An Interactive Learning Environment Experimental Investigation
2016
Accessibility is an important aspect of websites generally and public websites particularly. Many ways could be proposed to enhance accessibility, however the impact of selected actions is hard to predict due to diversification and contradiction, in addition to the existence of the time factor. A System Dynamics simulation model including factors affecting the accessibility of Norwegian municipal websites was encapsulated in an Interactive Learning Environment (ILE). As the model promised to be able to change how users think and take decisions, this ILE was tested by users in an experiment. We have conducted a#x03B1;, a#x03B2;, and a#x03B3; change analysis on the results of this experiment.…
Assessment of a Web Comparative Behavioural Model with an Interdisciplinary and Complexity Approach
2016
E-commerce has transformed the way in which consumers and vendors interact, changing how consumers make decisions (Steckel et al., 2005). Economic theory assumes that, despite the easy online access to a myriad of information, consumers will keep searching for information as long as the perceived benefit from doing so is larger than the cost involved (Jepsen, 2007). Despite the vast amount of commerce-related information, consumers value convenience when searching for product and services online. However Oorni (2005) found that when searching for travel packages, consumers were even willing to pay more when the effort to be made was too large. When designing Web sites, marketers typically e…
Notes on the Spanish Supreme Court Ruling That Considers Riders to Be Employees
2020
Spain is one of the countries with highest levels of judicialisation of the dispute over the classification of platform working. Dozens of rulings have been issued in recent years. Most have pointed out the labour relation of platform workers in the transport sector, although some have argued that they were truly self-employed. This contradiction in judicial doctrine has allowed / forced the Spanish Supreme Court to rule on the matter. This ruling of 25 September 2020 (rec. 4746/2019) was issued by the plenary session of the Supreme Court on social matters, the decision being adopted unanimously by all the magistrates. The ruling has its origins in the case of a delivery rider who filed an …
Cognitive status and referential acts in functional discourse grammar
2018
In Functional Discourse Grammar, both Ascription and Reference are characterized as actional processes and are captured at the Interpersonal Level of linguistic description. Additionally, the temporal sequencing of Discourse Acts seems relevant to establishing dependency relations among them. However, the remainder of the levels of representation in the theory contain static descriptions of linguistic structures and not of processes. In this paper, I will argue that this is the result of an inherent contradiction between FDG’s characterization as a static grammar and the dynamicity of verbal interaction, which is best solved if the theory commits itself to the procedural nature of the Inter…
“Etymologia Est Origo Vocabulorum…”
1985
SUMMARYThe study wants to contribute to the explication of Isidore of Sevilla's conception of etymology starting with the definition "Etymologia est origo vocabulorum, cum vis verbi vel nominis per interpretationem colligitur" (Etym. I, xxix, 1). At first sight the problem of interpretation results from the contradiction between the static character of the principal clause (est origo) and the dynamic character of the subordinate clause (colligitur). This contradiction is resolved in favour of the dynamic aspect by changing origo into originatio on the basis of a teleological and historical interpretation. In a second step, an attempt has been made to arrive at a comprehensive assessment of …
Fingimientos y atenuación en el uso de "creo"
2018
The article analyses the development of attenuation functions in different uses of creo in colloquial conversations. This propositional attitude verb, the most polysemic and polyfunctional one in its category, has been traditionally considered an attenuating device because it can be used by speakers to convey distancing from their message. However, the fact that it is a subjectifier in its first person form could be understood as a contradiction with its function being primarily attenuating. This paper explores the semantic and pragmatic values of the different uses of creo in order to determine what triggers attenuation. 215 examples from two conversational corpora, VAL.ES.CO. 2002 and VAL…
Quelques aspects de la contradiction et de la remise en cause dans le genre Letters to the editor
2001
The aim of this study is to pick out a few discursive strategies in two research communities and to perform a comparative analysis of their linguist…
Isocrates on paradoxical discourse
2013
It has long been stated that, in Isocrates' Helen, there seems to be an open contradiction between the author's harsh criticism of logoi paradoxoi and the simple fact that his own encomia of Helen and Busiris appear to be specimens of that very genre. Traditionally, this contradiction has been explained by Isocrates' need to distanciate his own work from that of his predecessors. This paper undertakes a different approach. Isocrates' criticism of paradoxographic literature is based upon observations about what is and what is not allowed in moral epideictic discourse. Isocrates' specific instructions about proper and improper moral argumentation can function as hermeneutical tool to analyze …
Consumers’ neutralization strategies to counter normative pressure : The case of illegal downloading
2014
International audience; The process of neutralization of normative pressure by consumers, which allows the performance of deviant practices while maintaining the attachment to the norm, has not been sufficiently studied. Our analysis, in the case of illegal downloading, shows that consumers produce an autonomous discursive set, articulated around three defensive strategies (disempowerment as neutralizing, pragmatic neutralization, ideological neutralization) and accept internal contradiction.
Mathematics and Soft Computing in Music
2011
Mathematics is the fundamental tool for dealing with the physical processes that explain music but it is also in the very essence of this art. Musical notes, the first elements which music works with, are defined for each tuning system as very specific frequencies; however, instrumentalists know that small changes in these values do not have serious consequences. In fact, sometimes consensus is only reached if the entire orchestra alters the theoretical pitches. The explanation for this contradiction is that musicians implicitly handle very complex mathematical processes involving some uncertainty in the concepts and this is better explained in terms of fuzzy logic. Modelling the notes as f…
