Sensitivity enhancement in pulse EPR distance measurements

2004

Established pulse EPR approaches to the measurement of small dipole-dipole couplings between electron spins rely on constant-time echo experiments to separate relaxational contributions from dipolar time evolution. This requires a compromise between sensitivity and resolution to be made prior to the measurement, so that optimum data are only obtained if the magnitude of the dipole-dipole coupling is known beforehand to a good approximation. Moreover, the whole dipolar evolution function is measured with relatively low sensitivity. These problems are overcome by a variable-time experiment that achieves suppression of the relaxation contribution by reference deconvolution. Theoretical and exp…

High voltage conditioning of the electrostatic deflector of MARA

2016

Abstract MARA is a new recoil mass separator in the Accelerator Laboratory of University of Jyvaskyla (JYFL-ACCLAB) with a mass resolving power of 250 and an ion-optical configuration of QQQD E D M . In this paper the construction, control and conditioning of its electrostatic deflector are described. The deflector was designed for voltages up to 500 kV accross the gap, corresponding to a 3.6 MV/m field, to accomodate fusion reactions with inverse kinematics. Titanium electrodes with a beam dump opening in the anode are used. The conditioning procedure, which has been used repeatedly to take the deflector to 450 kV, is described, along with the safety systems and precautions that are in pla…

A more sensitive search for νμ→ντ oscillations in NOMAD

1999

With additional data and improved algorithms, we have enhanced the sensitivity of our appearance search for $\numunutau$ oscillations in the NOMAD detector in the CERN-SPS wide-band neutrino beam. The search uses kinematic criteria to identify $\nutau$ charged current interactions followed by decay of the $\tau^-$ to one of several decay modes. Our ``blind'' analyses of deep-inelastic scattering data taken in 1996 and 1997, combined with consistent reanalyses of previously reported 1995 data, yield no oscillation signal. For the two-family oscillation scenario, we present the contour outlining a 90\% C.L. confidence region in the $\sin^22\theta_{\mu \tau} - \Delta m^2$ plane. At large $\Del…

Inclusive B ¯ → X s ℓ + ℓ − $$ \overline{B}\to {X}_s{\ell}^{+}{\ell}^{-} $$ : complete angular analysis and a thorough study of collinear photons

2015

We investigate logarithmically enhanced electromagnetic corrections of all angular observables in inclusive $$ \overline{B}\to {X}_s{\ell}^{+}{\ell}^{-} $$ . We present analytical results, which are supplemented by a dedicated Monte Carlo study on the treatment of collinear photons in order to determine the size of the electromagnetic logarithms. We then give the Standard Model predictions of all observables, considering all available NNLO QCD, NLO QED and power corrections, and investigate their sensitivity to New Physics. Since the structure of the double differential decay rate is modified in the presence of QED corrections, we also propose new observables which vanish if only QCD correc…

Empirical BAC factors method application to two real case studies in South Italy

2021

Abstract The application of Building Automation and Control (BAC) systems has many advantages. One of these is the reduction of the end-user electricity consumption and, if applied to lighting systems, the achievement of well-acknowledged benefits from daylight, such as productivity, health, visual comfort and well-being. Concerning the first aspect, the international Standard EN 15232 proposes the so-called BAC Factors (BF) method to assess the impact of BAC systems on the final energy consumption. The method provides a simplified estimation of the energy savings due to automation in buildings and questions arise on its applicability in some situations. For this reason, the authors have ca…

An approach to the measurement of the nonlinear refractive index of very short lengths of optical fibers

2018

A method for the measurement of the nonlinear-refractive index coefficient in single-mode optical fibers is presented. It takes advantage of the high sensitivity of the acousto-optic interaction effect in optical fibers to the fiber properties. Direct measurement of the nonlinear-refractive index change resulting from cross-phase modulation between a probe and a pump signal is obtained from the fiber's acousto-optic interaction performance. It is a non-interferometric method in which a very short length of fiber (<0.25 m) is required.
