This study analyses taxonomic and functional richness in European grasslands along continental-scale temperature and precipitation gradients. Location Europe. Geographic mosaic of selection by avian predators on hindwing warning colour in a polymorphic aposematic moth

AbstractWarning signals are predicted to develop signal monomorphism via positive frequency-dependent selection (+FDS) albeit many aposematic systems exhibit signal polymorphism. To understand this mismatch, we conducted a large-scale predation experiment in four locations, among which the frequencies of hindwing warning coloration of aposematic Arctia plantaginis differ. Here we show that selection by avian predators on warning colour is predicted by local morph frequency and predator community composition. We consider a recursive iterative algorithm for identification of parameters of the Preisach model, one of the most commonly used models of hysteretic input-output relationships. The classical identification algorithm due to Mayergoyz defines explicitly a series of test inputs that allow one to find parameters of the Preisach model with any desired precision provided that (a) such input time series can be implemented and applied; and, (b) the corresponding output data can be accurately measured and recorded. Adaptive-gain extended Kalman filter: Extension to the continuous-discrete case

In the present article we propose a nonlinear observer that merges the behaviors 1) of an extended Kalman filter, mainly designed to smooth off noise , and 2) of high-gain observers devoted to handle large perturbations in the state estimation. We specifically aim at continuous-discrete systems. The strategy consists in letting the high-gain self adapt according to the innovation. We define innovation computed over a time window and justify its usage via an important lemma. We prove the general convergence of the resulting observer.
Adaptive Feedforward Control of a Pressure Compensated Differential Cylinder

This paper presents the design, simulation and experimental verification of adaptive feedforward motion control for a hydraulic differential cylinder. The proposed solution is implemented on a hydraulic loader crane. Based on common adaptation methods, a typical electro-hydraulic motion control system has been extended with a novel adaptive feedforward controller that has two separate feedforward states, i.e, one for each direction of motion. Simulations show convergence of the feedforward states, as well as 23% reduction in root mean square (RMS) cylinder position error compared to a fixed gain feedforward controller. A class of third order iterative Kurchatov–Steffensen (derivative free) methods for solving nonlinear equations

Abstract In this paper we show a strategy to devise third order iterative methods based on classic second order ones such as Steffensen’s and Kurchatov’s. These methods do not require the evaluation of derivatives, as opposed to Newton or other well known third order methods such as Halley or Chebyshev. Some theoretical results on convergence will be stated, and illustrated through examples. These methods are useful when the functions are not regular or the evaluation of their derivatives is costly. Furthermore, special features as stability, laterality (asymmetry) and other properties can be addressed by choosing adequate nodes in the design of the methods.
Learning of Cooperative Behaviour in Robot Populations

This paper addresses convergence and equilibrium properties of game theoretic learning algorithms in robot populations using simple and broadly applicable reward/cost models of cooperation between robotic agents. New models for robot cooperation are proposed by combining regret based learning methods and network evolution models. Results of mean-field game theory are employed in order to show the asymptotic second moment boundedness in the variation of cooperative behaviour. The behaviour of the proposed models are tested in simulation results, which are based on sample networks and a single lane traffic flow case study.

This paper investigates the relation between cooperation, competition, and local interactions in large distributed multi-agent\ud systems. The main contribution is the game-theoretic problem formulation and solution approach based on the new framework\ud of distributed approachability, and the study of the convergence properties of the resulting game model. This paper studies a decentralized routing problem over a network, using the paradigm of mean-field games with large number of players. Building on a state-space extension technique, we turn the problem into an optimal control one for each single player. The main contribution is an explicit expression of the optimal decentralized control which guarantees the convergence both to local and to global equilibrium points. Furthermore, we study the stability of the system also in the presence of a delay which we model using an hysteresis operator.
