A social humanoid robot as a playfellow for vocabulary enhancement

2018

We introduce a system that exploits a Pepper humanoid robot acting as a playfellow in a word-play game. The robot can play a portmanteau game by directly interacting with children, and it exploits a conversation engine, a portmanteau creation engine, and a definition engine. The humanoid can play the role of either an answerer or a generator of new words.

A Light Insight into Latvian and Lithuanian ICT Terminology: Whether Kindred Language Imply Kindred Terminology?

2018

Lithuanian and Latvian are two closely related languages, the only two of the Baltic branch of Indo-European languages. They are quite similar and share a great deal of vocabulary and grammar features, but not close enough to make conversation possible. The paper reveals that commonalities between Latvian and Lithuanian information and communication technologies (ICT) terms are mostly due internationalisms, there are only small proportion of terms with common Baltic word-roots; influence of English language in Latvian and Lithuanian ICT terminology is moderate, if not minor; deliberately or unawares, Lithuanian terminologists follow the same rules as their Latvian counterparts.

From information to conversation

2000

We support the calls from many commentators to include human interaction in the web, rather than as an extra outside the web. We suggest a generic model of awareness, and some specific interpretations: action-event couplings to call a receiver; general awareness of known others; and local awareness of all others. We then consider extensions to the web into mobile and domestic appliances, and suggest that an underlying awareness service will be needed there as much, or more than in classic desktop web access.

65 Science reboot. Creation of an evidence-based literature by increasing the use of regional languages in science

2019

Objectives English as an International Language is widely used in science. Unfortunately, scientific information space is oversaturated by using International Language, while Regional Languages remain informatively poor. The oversaturation leads to the information overload 1–4 , reducing the quality of information and data interpretation. At the same time, non-English speaking countries publish new studies in regional journals, causing contrary effect – information deficiency in English. 5 Similarly to RCSB PDB and NCBI, the authors suggest to create a novel scientific database in order to: - Enrich the regional languages allowing them to be competitive; - Concentrate on the evidence-based …

A conversational, morpho-syntactic and intonation analysis of discourse markers in political discourse : A case study of presidential debates and tel…

2020

This thesis proposes a morphosyntactic, prosodic and conversational analysis of discourse markers in presidential debates and televised political talkshows in the United States of America. The main object of the study is the role of discourse markers in the sequential structuring and in the enunciative organisation of presidential debates in the United States of America. Discourse markers, in correlation with gestures and intonation, contribute significantly to the construction of the verbal exchange between the various participants in mediated political discourse. To achieve its goals, this thesis draws on several theoretical frameworks dealing with spontaneous speech (Benveniste and Berre…

Parler pour ne pas agir. La co-construction du discours de la lâcheté dans "Du pain plein les poches" de M. Vişniec

2012

This article studies the semantic and pragmatic functioning of dialogue in Matei Vişniec’s play, Du pain plein les poches. The analysis shall rely on conversational pragmatics and enunciative linguistics, and deal with the dynamics of interaction and speech strategies, in order to bring forth the mechanisms involved in the construction of a speech induced by cowardice.

Conversational Turn Length and Fluency Measurement in Aphasia

2013

A common assumption regarding fluency is that the difference between a fluent and non-fluent speaker can be easily stated (Poeck, 1989; Gordon, 1998). However, there is no objective and valid measure to determinate the level of a person with aphasia on the fluency continuum. Traditionally, people with aphasia have been classified as fluent or non-fluent following the cognitive criteria. In ecologycal data we find that 7,3 words-per-turn value is a valid measure in Spanish and Catalan to delimit fluent and non-fluent speakers. These results emphasize the importance of the quantitative analysis of fluency in speech in its natural environment. As well, the measure of 7,3 words-per-turn not onl…
